Cat Cremation in South Korea: what to know
Families in South Korea often find the hardest part isn't the decision itself but not knowing who to call, especially when a cat dies suddenly or out of sight. Your vet is the usual first contact and can arrange everything. If you'd rather choose the crematorium yourself, you can, and we can email you options for your area.
If you're living in South Korea but may move abroad one day, cremation keeps your options open. A sealed container of a cat's ashes is small enough to travel in hand luggage with the crematorium's certificate, while a garden grave stays behind. Many expat families in South Korea choose it for that reason, then decide on a final resting place years later.
We cover 7 communities in South Korea, from Seoul, Busan and Incheon to smaller towns.

Why cremation is familiar in South Korea, or isn't
High cremation rates, about 92.43%[1] for people in South Korea, often go hand in hand with pet crematories with viewing rooms and set farewell times. Many will let you stay while your cat is placed in the chamber, or wait on site and take the ashes home the same day. It costs a little more and needs booking, but for some owners, seeing it through is what lets them rest.
We take the South Korea percentage from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.
What cat cremation costs in South Korea
In South Korea, private cremation is the usual choice for families who want their cat's ashes, and many providers include a short farewell ceremony. In Singapore, for example, one provider lists communal cremation at SGD 160 for a cat under 5 kg and private at SGD 280[2]. Ask exactly what's included before you compare.
In Tokyo, one memorial park charges about ¥14,300 for communal and ¥22,000 for individual cremation of a pet under 5 kg[3], while some ward collection routes cost less but don't return the ashes[4]. In South Korea, ask any provider whether the ashes come back and what the package covers.
| Place | Example price | What's included |
|---|---|---|
| Singapore (cat under 5 kg) | SGD 160 communal / SGD 280 private[5] | Columbarium niches extra |
| Tokyo (pet under 5 kg) | ¥14,300 communal / ¥22,000 individual[3] | Tax included |
| Hong Kong (1 to 5 kg pet) | HKD 1,300 individual[6] | Basic individual cremation |
| Japan (1 to 5 kg pet) | about ¥60,000[7] | Funeral package with ceremony |
We built the this numbers from Singapore Pet Columbarium and PETMENTO (Hong Kong pet funeral provider), and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Burial and scattering rules for South Korea
Rules about pets after death are set locally, so it's worth knowing the basics for South Korea before you decide. Cremation itself is straightforward everywhere; burial and scattering are where local rules come in, and for a cat, burial is the one people most often ask about.
In South Korea, burying a pet yourself is generally not allowed, and licensed pet funeral facilities handle cremation, often with a short farewell ceremony and a choice of urns. Some facilities are outside the cities, so ask about collection. Get the price for a cat and a clear list of what the package includes.
What to do next, one step at a time
- If your cat died at the clinic or an emergency hospital, during surgery, in an oxygen cage or overnight on a drip, nothing needs deciding before you leave. Ask the team to keep your cat in their cold room while you think.
- Ask to see your cat if you missed the moment. Hospitals will usually wrap your cat in a blanket and bring them into a private room, and people often find it helps far more than they thought it would.
- Request a copy of the notes when a death came out of nowhere. A post-mortem is an option too, but only before the cremation, so raise it straight away if you want one.
- Tell the hospital which crematory you want. The provider an emergency hospital normally uses isn't necessarily your regular vet's, and you can pick either, or one you found on your own.
- Check that the hospital records private or communal correctly when they fill in the release paperwork, and take away a copy that carries your cat's name.
- Collect your cat's collar, carrier and blanket, or have the staff keep the blanket with your cat for the journey.
Keeping your cat's memory close in South Korea
A clay paw print on the mantel, a small vial of shed whiskers or a lock of fur sealed in a frame are keepsakes only a cat leaves behind. Some families in South Korea also make a donation of food or litter to a South Korea shelter in their cat's name; ask first what they can use, as opened bags often can't be accepted.

Questions people ask
How many communities do you cover in South Korea?
We currently have local cat cremation guides for 7 communities in South Korea, including Seoul, Busan and Incheon. Each page covers local weather and timing, prices, rules and how pickup usually works there.
How much does cat cremation cost in South Korea?
Prices across South Korea depend mostly on whether you choose private or communal cremation, plus any home pickup or urn upgrade; a cat's weight barely changes the price. Big-city providers may charge more for same-day collection, while rural areas may add mileage. Ask for an itemized written total before you agree.
Is cat cremation common in South Korea?
For people, about 92.43%[1] of deaths in South Korea end in cremation, and pet aftercare tends to follow local habits. Among families who want to keep their cat close, cremation is now the most common choice, especially in towns and cities where many cats live indoors.
Can a vet come to my home to put my cat to sleep anywhere in South Korea?
In and around larger cities, mobile vets who offer home euthanasia are common, and they're especially popular with cat owners because it avoids the carrier and the car. In rural parts of South Korea, coverage is patchier and travel fees are more likely. Your regular vet may visit even if they don't advertise it, so ask.
Is cat cremation cheaper in small towns in South Korea?
Sometimes, but not always. Small-town vets often have lower fees and a set collection day with a regional crematory, which keeps costs down. On the other hand, mileage charges for a home collection can cost more than the cremation of a cat. Bringing your cat in yourself is the easiest saving anywhere.
Can I arrange cremation for a community or feral cat in South Korea?
Yes. You don't have to be the registered owner to arrange cremation for a cat you cared for. Ask a vet to scan for a microchip first, in case someone is looking for them. Rescue groups and trap-neuter-return volunteers in South Korea often know a provider offering low-cost communal cremation, and private cremation is available if you'd like the ashes.
