Gangnam, Seoul
Who handles cat aftercare in Gangnam
Seoul's climate swings between hot, humid summers with a monsoon season in July and cold, dry winters that regularly drop below freezing. In summer, act within the hour: lay your pet on a towel, place ice packs along the body and keep the air conditioning running. In winter you have a little more time, but most families still arrange a farewell and cremation within a day.
Most pet crematoria serving Seoul are outside the city, in Gyeonggi Province, so a pet funeral usually means a drive from Gangnam, either with the family or through a provider's pickup service. Gangnam's green space is mostly the Yangjaecheon stream, Seolleung's royal tomb grounds and the Han River parks, and many families remember those weekends as part of life with a pet. With human cremation above 90 percent in Korea, cremation feels natural here.
Many Gangnam cat owners rent, and that quietly decides a lot. Leases rarely allow burial in a shared yard, and a balcony planter isn't a grave. Cremation sidesteps all of it: your cat's ashes fit in a small urn that can move with you to the next apartment or the next city. Because a cat returns so little ash, some owners keep it in a keepsake box on a bookshelf, which suits small spaces well.
About 561,000 people live in Gangnam, which makes it the 2nd-largest of the 2 Seoul communities we cover.
For a second opinion on price, Seoul (5 miles, a larger centre), Incheon (18 miles, a larger centre) and Daejeon (82 miles, a larger centre) are close enough that their providers cover Gangnam routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
92.43%[1]
In 2023, 92.43% of deaths in South Korea were cremated (60 crematoria).
clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[2]
CareCredit's 2025 study put US cat euthanasia at $158 in clinic and $359 at home, cat cremation at $180 and cat cemetery burial at $566.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

The local attitude to cremation
When cremation is as routine as it is in South Korea (roughly 92.43%[1] of human funerals), the risk is assuming rather than asking. A busy clinic may note "cremation" without saying which kind. Say the words you mean, private with ashes returned or communal without, and ask for them on the form. It's a two-minute check that prevents a mistake nobody can fix later.
The South Korea figure comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Weather, timing and your cat in Gangnam
Seasonal weather also shapes what happens afterwards. Scattering in wind or burying ashes in wet or frozen soil is harder than it sounds, so many families in Gangnam keep the urn at home for a while and choose a calm, dry day for any outdoor memorial. There's no time limit on ashes.

Cat cremation costs around Gangnam
Many pet funeral providers in Gangnam sell packages rather than a single cremation price: collection, a short ceremony, individual cremation, an urn and sometimes a niche. Packages can be good value, but compare like with like. Ask for the price of individual cremation on its own, then add extras. In Japan, communal cremation is often about half the price of individual services[4].
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Seoul: Seoul costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Burial, ashes and the rules in Seoul
Most of the decisions after a cat dies are yours alone. The exceptions are burial and scattering, which Seoul and your local council or city may regulate, and, in some places, updating your cat's microchip record so the database knows they've died.
In South Korea, burying a pet yourself is generally not allowed, and licensed pet funeral facilities handle cremation, often with a short farewell ceremony and a choice of urns. Some facilities are outside the cities, so ask about collection. Get the price for a cat and a clear list of what the package includes.
What to do next, one step at a time
- Say goodbye in your own way. There's no rush. Many families sit with their cat for an hour or two, and it's fine to hold them.
- Let your other cats see the body if there are others at home. One might sniff and leave; another might settle beside their friend for a while. Both are ordinary.
- Make a keepsake if you'd like one. A paw print must be taken before cremation, and fur is easier to clip now too.
- Contact a provider yourself or via your vet. If you'd rather, we can send you local options.
- Choose private or communal, then have the provider put that choice in writing.
- Plan where the ashes will go. You don't have to decide now; a cat's ashes fit in a small container that can sit on a shelf for as long as you need.
Remembering your cat, in Gangnam and beyond
Almost every pet in Gangnam lives in an apartment, usually in a large high-rise complex with shared lifts, security desks and underground parking. When you ask for aftercare options, give your complex and building number and how a vehicle can reach your entrance, since many pet funeral providers offer pickup. Korean rules steer families away from burying pets in the ground, so a registered pet funeral provider is the usual route.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Gangnam?
Usually yes. Seoul is about 5 miles away, Incheon is about 18 miles away and Daejeon is about 82 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in South Korea?
For people, yes: about 92.43%[1] of South Korea deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Gangnam follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Are there vets in Gangnam who will put my cat to sleep at home?
In a large city you'll usually find several mobile vets who offer in-home euthanasia, and many cat owners prefer it because it avoids the carrier and the car. At-home visits cost more than the clinic; for cats in the US, about 2.27x[6] the price. Book as early as you can, and ask whether the vet can take your cat for cremation afterwards.
How much ash will I get back from my cat?
Much less than people expect. Cremated remains weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight[3], so a 12 lb cat would be expected to return about 6.7 oz[7], roughly a teacup's worth. An urn of about 12 cubic inches is usually enough[5]. Our urn size calculator works it out from your cat's weight.
Why do quotes for the same cat cremation in Gangnam vary so much?
In a large city, providers differ in overheads, whether they collect themselves or use a courier, which container is included and whether a vet adds a fee for arranging it. Two private cat cremations can be identical in practice but priced very differently. Ask each provider for an itemized quote, then compare the cremation line on its own.
How long until I get my cat's ashes back in Gangnam?
Many families get their cat's ashes back within about one to two weeks, and 5 to 10 days is commonly quoted in the US[8]. In a large city it can be quicker; where the cremation happens in a larger centre like Seoul, it may take a little longer. Ask for an expected return date when you book.
