Why cremation is familiar in South Korea, or isn't
With cremation chosen for roughly 92.43%[1] of the population in South Korea, the choice of method is widening too. Some pet crematories near Daejeon now offer water-based cremation (aquamation), which uses warm water and alkali rather than flame and still returns ashes. If the gentler process appeals, ask whether it's offered for cats and how the price compares with a private cremation.

Timing your cat's aftercare in Daejeon's climate
Weather matters most in the first day. If it's warm in Daejeon, keep your cat in the coolest room with wrapped ice packs alongside them and ask for collection within the day. If it's cold, an unheated room can safely hold your cat until morning. Either way, close the door so other pets can't disturb them, and don't feel you have to rush the goodbye.

Burial, ashes and the rules in South Korea
If your cat was put to sleep, the drug used stays in the body after death and can poison a dog, fox or bird of prey that digs up a grave. That's why many authorities discourage burying euthanized pets anywhere animals can reach them, and why cremation is simpler for most families. The notes below show what South Korea says about burial and scattering.
In South Korea, burying a pet yourself is generally not allowed, and licensed pet funeral facilities handle cremation, often with a short farewell ceremony and a choice of urns. Some facilities are outside the cities, so ask about collection. Get the price for a cat and a clear list of what the package includes.
What to do first, and what can wait
- If your cat died while you were away, in the care of a sitter, a neighbor or a boarding cattery, your first call is to whoever was looking after them. Find out what took place and where your cat is at this moment.
- Ask them to keep your cat cool: covered with a towel in a lidded box in the coolest part of the house, or taken to the nearest vet if the house will be warm.
- Give your vet permission by phone or email so they can keep your cat until you're back. With a call in advance, most practices around Daejeon will take a cat brought in by a sitter.
- Decide whether you want to see your cat before cremation. If you do, the clinic can hold them for a few days; if the trip home is long, a photo from the vet can be a gentle substitute.
- Arrange the cremation remotely if you need to. Providers take instructions and payment by phone, and the ashes can wait at the clinic for you.
- Be kind to the person who was looking after your cat. An elderly cat can go downhill in hours, and a sitter who rang for help acted exactly as they should have.
Remembering your cat, in Daejeon and beyond
In Korea, burying a pet in a park, on a hillside or in public ground is not an allowed option, and many owners are surprised to learn it. How do South Korea attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the South Korea human cremation rate at about 92.43%[1]. We show it on the Daejeon page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Daejeon?
Usually yes. Daegu is about 76 miles away, Gangnam is about 82 miles away and Incheon is about 85 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do I know I'm getting my own cat's ashes back?
Ask the provider how they track each animal. Careful crematories use a numbered tag, often metal, that stays with your cat from collection through cremation and returns with the ashes, along with a certificate. Ask whether private means your cat is alone in the chamber, since some providers use partitioned cremation. Get the answer in writing.
Can someone collect my cat from home in Daejeon?
Yes. Most pet crematories and many vets in and around Daejeon offer home collection, sometimes out of hours for an extra fee. Because a cat is small, many families also bring their cat to the vet or crematory themselves in a carrier or lined box, which usually saves the collection charge. Either way, ask for the price in writing first.
What's the difference between private and communal cremation for a cat?
In a private cremation your cat is cremated alone and every bit of ash returned is theirs. In a communal cremation several animals are cremated together and no ashes come back; they're usually scattered in a memorial garden. Some providers also offer partitioned cremation, where pets share the chamber with dividers. Private typically costs about 2.0x[6] the communal price.
Should my other cats see the cat who died?
Many owners let their other cats sniff and sit with the body for a few minutes before collection, and it does no harm. Some cats show interest, others walk away; both are normal. Afterwards, keep feeding and litter routines steady. If a remaining cat stops eating for more than a day or two, call your vet, as cats don't cope well with going without food.
