Saying goodbye to your cat in Daegu

Daegu, South Korea

What arranging cat cremation in Daegu is like

Many Daegu families associate their pet with one special spot: a sunny apartment window, a rooftop garden, or the green paths along the Sincheon stream and the Geumho River. A private cremation where you can attend and take the ashes home the same day is common here. If you'd rather not be present, that's fine too. Ask how the cremation is carried out and what the ashes will come back in.

Daegu is known as one of the hottest cities in Korea, because the surrounding mountains trap summer heat in the basin, and its winters are cold and dry. In July and August, a pet's body needs cooling almost at once: lay your pet on a towel, place ice packs around the belly and back, and keep the air conditioning running. In winter, a room away from floor heating works for a short while.

In a metro the size of Daegu, traffic and parking shape the day more than distance. A crematory van crossing town at rush hour may give you a two- or three-hour window rather than a time. If that's hard to manage, ask whether you can drop your cat at the nearest partner clinic instead, or whether a provider nearer South Korea covers your address. Tell them about parking, stairs and entry codes when you book.

About 2,461,000 people live in Daegu.

Our pages for Busan (55 miles), Daejeon (76 miles) and Gwangju (110 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Daegu as well.

In 2023, 92.43% of deaths in South Korea were cremated (60 crematoria).

clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[2]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Cremation traditions in South Korea

Local habits show up in small ways. Where about 92.43%[1] of people are cremated, as in South Korea, relatives are more likely to keep an urn themselves and less likely to question yours. Some owners keep a cat's ashes so they can one day be placed with a person, or scattered together with another cat from the same home. If that's something you'd like, keep the ashes sealed and labelled, and check the rules for any cemetery you have in mind.

That South Korea rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Daegu only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

Weather, timing and your cat in Daegu

Seasonal weather also shapes what happens afterwards. Scattering in wind or burying ashes in wet or frozen soil is harder than it sounds, so many families in Daegu keep the urn at home for a while and choose a calm, dry day for any outdoor memorial. There's no time limit on ashes.

Cat cremation costs around Daegu

Burial and scattering rules for South Korea

You don't need a permit to have your cat cremated, but what you do afterwards, burying them in the garden or scattering their ashes in a park, can be governed by local rules. Here's what applies in South Korea.

In South Korea, burying a pet yourself is generally not allowed, and licensed pet funeral facilities handle cremation, often with a short farewell ceremony and a choice of urns. Some facilities are outside the cities, so ask about collection. Get the price for a cat and a clear list of what the package includes.

What to do next, one step at a time

  1. If your cat is elderly or newly diagnosed, begin while there's time. Cancer, thyroid disease or failing kidneys usually leave you weeks, sometimes months, to make plans without pressure.
  2. Ask your vet what the end is likely to look like for your cat's condition, and which signs mean it's time to talk again.
  3. Choose the aftercare now: private or communal cremation, and who collects your cat. Compare prices with our cost calculator while you're calm.
  4. Write your wishes down and have the clinic attach them to your cat's file, so that a locum or an out-of-hours hospital in Daegu knows what you've decided.
  5. Pick the place for the goodbye: your own home, a quiet room at the clinic, or outside in the garden if the weather is kind. If home is your preference, keep a mobile vet's number handy.
  6. Spend the good days well. Treats, a warm windowsill, a brush, a camera. The point of planning ahead is that the final stretch belongs to your cat rather than to the phone.

Remembering your cat in Daegu

Daegu sits in a basin ringed by mountains, with Palgongsan to the north and Apsan to the south, and most households live in apartment complexes spreading out from the old center. As elsewhere in Korea, burying a pet on a hillside, in a park or on apartment grounds isn't permitted, so licensed cremation is the normal route. Many facilities sit outside the city, so tell us your district and whether you'd like collection.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in South Korea?

For people, yes: about 92.43%[1] of South Korea deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Daegu follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Daegu?

Usually yes. Busan is about 55 miles away, Daejeon is about 76 miles away and Gwangju is about 110 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Can I keep my cat's whiskers and fur before cremation?

Yes, and it's easiest before collection. Clip a small lock of fur from somewhere hidden, like the chest or behind a back leg, and keep it in an envelope or small bag. Shed whiskers turn up in beds and on windowsills for weeks, and a glass vial keeps them safe. Many providers can also take a fur clipping or paw print for you if you ask on the first call.

How much does cat cremation cost in Daegu?

Prices depend on the country and whether you choose individual or communal cremation, but cats are always in the lowest weight band. Published examples include about AUD 412 in Australia for pets up to 5 kg[6] and €250 in Ireland for cats up to 10 kg[7]. Ask Daegu providers for a written quote in local currency that lists collection and the container.

Can someone collect my cat from home in Daegu?

Yes. Most pet crematories and many vets in and around Daegu offer home collection, sometimes out of hours for an extra fee. Because a cat is small, many families also bring their cat to the vet or crematory themselves in a carrier or lined box, which usually saves the collection charge. Either way, ask for the price in writing first.

Should I choose cremation or burial for my cat?

Surveys in the US and UK point the same way: roughly two-thirds of bereaved owners choose cremation and about 30% choose burial[8]. A cat's small size makes a garden burial easy where it's allowed, but cremation is simpler if you rent, might move or want your cat close. You can combine them by burying the ashes.
