Busan's winters are milder than Seoul's, but summers are hot and sticky, and typhoons regularly reach the southern coast in late summer and early autumn. In warm weather, cool your pet's body straight away with a towel and ice packs in an air-conditioned room. If a typhoon warning is in force, ask the provider how they handle delays and how long cooling can safely continue.
Busan stretches along the coast and up steep hillsides, and most pets live in tall apartment blocks from Haeundae to Seomyeon. Burying a pet in parks, on the mountains or on apartment grounds isn't allowed in Korea, so licensed cremation is the usual path, often at facilities outside the dense center. Most cats in a city like Busan live indoors, often in apartments, and their whole world is a few rooms. That shapes the goodbye. The local attitude to cremation
Cremation is the norm in South Korea: about 92.43%[1] of people who die there are cremated. That familiarity carries over to pets. Most cat owners here already know what a private cremation is, local providers are well established and nobody will think twice about a small urn on a bookshelf. With a cat, that urn can be tiny, which suits apartments and busy shelves alike.

Weather, timing and your cat in Busan
Weather matters most in the first day. If it's warm in Busan, keep your cat in the coolest room with wrapped ice packs alongside them and ask for collection within the day. Rules worth knowing in South Korea
Before you bury, scatter or plan a memorial, it's worth checking what South Korea allows. Keeping ashes at home is allowed everywhere we know of. Burying a whole cat and scattering in public places are where rules come in, usually to protect water supplies and shared spaces, and renters normally need the landlord's permission for any garden burial.
In South Korea, burying a pet yourself is generally not allowed, and licensed pet funeral facilities handle cremation, often with a short farewell ceremony and a choice of urns. Some facilities are outside the cities, so ask about collection. Get the price for a cat and a clear list of what the package includes.
What to do next, one step at a time
- If it's a child's cat, tell them simply and truthfully that the cat has died and won't come back. Avoid "put to sleep" with young children; it can make bedtime frightening.
- Let the child say goodbye if they want to: stroke the cat's fur, tuck in a drawing or choose the blanket your cat will travel in.
- Offer a small job: choosing a photograph, printing the name that will go on the urn, looking after the collar. Having a task makes the loss easier for a child to carry.
- Phone the clinic or a Busan pet crematory once the goodbye is done, and choose private cremation if the child will want the ashes back.
- Warn school or daycare that the family has had a loss, so a teacher knows why your child is quiet or upset.

In a large city you'll usually find several mobile vets who offer in-home euthanasia, and many cat owners prefer it because it avoids the carrier and the car. At-home visits cost more than the clinic; for cats in the US, about 2.27x[6] the price. Book as early as you can, and ask whether the vet can take your cat for cremation afterwards.
Are pet funerals with a ceremony common for cats in Busan?
In many parts of Asia, yes. Providers often offer a short farewell ceremony, sometimes with incense, flowers or a religious element, before an individual cremation, and some have columbarium niches. None of it is compulsory. If you'd prefer a simple cremation with your cat's ashes returned, say so and ask for that price on its own.
Can I keep my cat's whiskers and fur before cremation?
Yes, and it's easiest before collection. Clip a small lock of fur from somewhere hidden, like the chest or behind a back leg, and keep it in an envelope or small bag. Shed whiskers turn up in beds and on windowsills for weeks, and a glass vial keeps them safe. Many providers can also take a fur clipping or paw print for you if you ask on the first call.
Should my other cats see the cat who died?
Many owners let their other cats sniff and sit with the body for a few minutes before collection, and it does no harm. Some cats show interest, others walk away; both are normal. Afterwards, keep feeding and litter routines steady. If a remaining cat stops eating for more than a day or two, call your vet, as cats don't cope well with going without food.
