Gwangju, South Korea
How cat cremation works in Gwangju
Many Gwangju families have roots in rural Jeolla, and it can be tempting to think of burying a pet on a relative's land or a quiet hillside. Korean rules do not treat that as an allowed option, and burial in parks or public ground is not permitted either. The usual routes are cremation at a licensed pet funeral facility or aftercare arranged through your vet. If you want your own pet's ashes back, ask for an individual cremation.
Gwangju is the largest city in the Honam region, and most families here live in high-rise apartment complexes in districts such as Sangmu and Suwan, or in the newer estates on the city's edges. Licensed pet funeral facilities serving the city tend to sit out in the surrounding countryside of South Jeolla, so either a provider collects your pet or you drive there yourself. Ask how long the journey is, whether collection is included and whether you can attend.
A large metro like Gwangju usually has at least one veterinary hospital open around the clock, and that matters for cats, because so many crises come at night. If your cat dies at 3 am, an emergency clinic can confirm the death, keep your cat in a cold room and hold them until you've chosen a crematory. There's usually a fee for this, so ask. You don't have to decide anything else that night.
Gwangju is home to about 1,500,000 people.
If you want to compare providers, look at Daejeon (88 miles), Daegu (110 miles) and Busan (126 miles, a larger centre). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

Cremation in South Korea, and what it means for cat owners
When cremation is as routine as it is in South Korea (roughly 92.43%[1] of human funerals), the risk is assuming rather than asking. A busy clinic may note "cremation" without saying which kind. Say the words you mean, private with ashes returned or communal without, and ask for them on the form. It's a two-minute check that prevents a mistake nobody can fix later.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) is where the South Korea figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Gwangju tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Timing your cat's aftercare in Gwangju's climate
Whatever the season, ask any provider near Gwangju where your cat will wait between collection and cremation. A good crematory keeps animals in refrigerated storage and can tell you roughly how long your cat will be there. In warm weather that answer matters more; in cold weather it mostly affects when the ashes come home.

What you'll likely pay, and what adds to it
Many pet funeral providers in Gwangju sell packages rather than a single cremation price: collection, a short ceremony, individual cremation, an urn and sometimes a niche. Packages can be good value, but compare like with like. Ask for the price of individual cremation on its own, then add extras. In Japan, communal cremation is often about half the price of individual services[4].
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for South Korea: South Korea costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Burial, ashes and the rules in South Korea
One rule matters more than any other if your cat bit or scratched someone in the last couple of weeks, or died after sudden changes in behavior: tell your vet before anything else. Where rabies occurs, public health rules may require testing, and that has to happen before cremation. In almost every other case, the rules below only come into play once you choose what to do with the ashes or the body.
In South Korea, burying a pet yourself is generally not allowed, and licensed pet funeral facilities handle cremation, often with a short farewell ceremony and a choice of urns. Some facilities are outside the cities, so ask about collection. Get the price for a cat and a clear list of what the package includes.
Step by step in Gwangju
- If your cat dies at night, you don't need to call anyone until morning. Move your cat to a cool room and cover them with a towel.
- Put a towel or pad underneath. It's normal for a cat's bladder or bowels to release after death.
- Gently curl your cat into a sleeping position within the first few hours, before the body stiffens. It makes the box or basket easier and the goodbye gentler.
- In the morning, call your vet or a crematory covering Gwangju. Let them know where your cat is now and whether you're able to drive them over.
- Ask for the price in writing, including collection, private or communal cremation and the container for the ashes.
- Take a paw print, a lock of fur or their collar before collection if you'd like a keepsake.
- Write down the expected return date for the ashes, and the name of whoever will call when they're ready.
Keeping your cat close
Gwangju has hot, humid summers with a July monsoon, and cold winters when snow blowing in off the Yellow Sea can pile up across the Honam region more than in other southern cities. In the summer months, the air conditioner and a couple of frozen water bottles in a towel will keep your pet cool until the farewell; in winter a room without heating is usually enough. Allow extra travel time to an out-of-town facility on snowy or stormy days.

Questions people ask
How do South Korea attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the South Korea human cremation rate at about 92.43%[1]. We show it on the Gwangju page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Gwangju?
Usually yes. Daejeon is about 88 miles away, Daegu is about 110 miles away and Busan is about 126 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Can I cremate a stray or community cat I've been feeding?
Yes. You don't need to be the registered owner to arrange cremation for a cat you cared for. Ask your vet to scan for a microchip first, in case someone else is looking for them. Local rescues and trap-neuter-return groups around Gwangju often know a provider with low-cost communal cremation, and a private cremation is possible if you'd like the ashes back.
Will a pet collection service come to an apartment in Gwangju?
Yes. City providers regularly collect from apartments and high-rises. Tell them the floor, whether there's an elevator, where they can park and whether the concierge needs notice. With a cat, one person with a covered basket is usually enough, so collection is quick and discreet. If you'd rather, you can also take your cat to the clinic yourself by car or taxi.
What if my cat died outdoors or was hit by a car near Gwangju?
Bring gloves, a towel and a box, lift your cat gently and take them home or straight to your vet. A vet can scan for a microchip if you're not sure it's your cat, and can arrange cremation from there. A private cremation is still entirely possible, and so is a proper goodbye; the circumstances don't change that. Take someone with you if you can.
Should I choose cremation or burial for my cat?
Surveys in the US and UK point the same way: roughly two-thirds of bereaved owners choose cremation and about 30% choose burial[6]. A cat's small size makes a garden burial easy where it's allowed, but cremation is simpler if you rent, might move or want your cat close. You can combine them by burying the ashes.
