Using the calculator

How to use the cat cremation cost calculator

The calculator opens with Cat selected and 10 lb already filled in, which is close to the average domestic cat. Change the weight if yours was larger, like a Maine Coon or a Ragdoll, or smaller, like a Siamese. Then pick your country, choose the type of cremation, and tick any extras you're considering. The range updates as you go.

  1. Weight: switch between lb and kg. For cats, weight rarely moves the price much, because almost every provider puts cats in its lowest band.
  2. Type: communal (no ashes back), partitioned, private, or witnessed.
  3. Country: US, UK, Canada, Australia or somewhere else. The first four show local prices in local currency; somewhere else shows US prices in dollars as a rough guide.
  4. Extras: home or vet pickup, after-hours or weekend service, a paw print keepsake, an upgraded urn and at-home euthanasia. Outside the US, most extras show as a local quote and aren't added to the total.

You'll see a total range, a line-item table and a quick comparison of private against communal. If the numbers raise questions, our guide to comparing cat cremation quotes explains each line.

The method

Where the calculator's prices come from

For the US, the base price uses CareCredit's published bands for pets up to 30 lb: communal $45-75; private $100-175[2]. Cats fall comfortably inside that lightest band. We cross-check it against CareCredit's 2025 national averages for cats, shown below, which put private cremation a little above the band's upper end.

clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[1]

CareCredit's 2025 US national averages for cats: clinic and at-home euthanasia, private cremation, and pet cemetery burial.

For the UK, we use the Competition and Markets Authority's price data: large vet groups charged a median of GBP 186.87[3] for an individual cat cremation in the year to September 2024, and independent vet practices noticeably less. The calculator's UK private range runs from £160, the price independent crematoria publish for a cat, up to that vet-group median. For Australia, the median listed individual cremation for a pet up to 5 kg is around AUD 412[4].

Extras use typical add-on ranges rather than a single published source: home pickup $50 to $150, after-hours collection $75 to $200, a paw print $25 to $75 and an upgraded urn $50 to $300. As a check, our estimate of the median posted paw-print add-on at US crematories is ~$32[5]. They're labelled as typical ranges in the tool's small print.

A worked example

Example: an 11 lb indoor cat in a US suburb

Say your 11 lb tabby died at home on a Saturday evening. You want her ashes back, you'd like the crematorium to collect her, and you want a clay paw print. Here's how the calculator builds that:

Worked example: private cremation with collection and a paw print (US)
Line itemLowHigh
Private cremation, cat up to 30 lb$100$175
Home or vet pickup$50$150
After-hours or weekend service$75$200
Paw print keepsake$25$75
Estimated total$250$600

Now look at what moved the number. The cremation itself is under half the total; the Saturday evening collection is the biggest swing. If your cat can rest in a cool room until Monday, or you can drive her to the crematorium or your vet yourself, the after-hours line disappears and the high end drops by around $200.

Making sense of it

What your cost range means, and when a quote looks high

Treat the range as a sense check. A quote inside it is normal for your area. A quote well above it isn't necessarily wrong, since city prices and premium urns can push it up, but it's a reason to ask what's included. The UK regulator's final report estimated that owners may be overpaying for individual cremations compared with a truly competitive market (~GBP 100 overpayment[6]).

The private-versus-communal comparison under the result shows how much the ashes decision is worth in money. For small pets the gap is often modest in dollars, which surprises many cat owners, even though by our estimate private costs ~2.0x[7] the communal price across eight markets. Our private vs communal guide explains what the extra buys. If you're still torn, the aftercare options comparison weighs cost against the other things you care about.

Know the limits

What the cost calculator can't tell you

  • Exact prices from a particular crematorium. Only the provider can quote those.
  • Whether a provider's "individual" means truly private or partitioned. Ask directly.
  • Local surcharges for fuel, long distances or holidays. Our local pages note where these are common.
  • Insurance reimbursement. Standard policies usually exclude cremation, though some add-ons help.

What to do next

Turning an estimate into a real price

Call one or two providers, or ask your vet which crematorium they use and what it charges. Ask for the total in writing, including collection and the container. Our list of questions to ask a cat cremation provider keeps the call short.

Or let us do the searching: send your town and your cat's weight and we'll reply by email with the options and prices we find locally. For an overview of every service, see cat cremation services.

Questions people ask

Why doesn't my cat's weight change the price much?

Most crematoriums price by weight band, and the lightest band often runs up to 20 or 30 lb. Nearly every cat, even a large Maine Coon, fits inside it. So for cats, the type of cremation, the collection and the extras matter far more than a pound or two of body weight.

Is a UK cat cremation cheaper through an independent crematorium?

Often, yes. The UK competition regulator found large vet groups charging a median of about £187 for an individual cat cremation, while a sample of independent vet practices charged about £128 and some independent crematoriums publish similar prices. You can contact a crematorium directly even if your cat died at the vet.

Does the calculator include euthanasia?

Only if you tick it. At-home euthanasia is listed as an optional extra because it's a separate veterinary service; ticked in the US, it adds $325 to $750, the national at-home range. For cats in the US, CareCredit's 2025 averages were about $158 in a clinic and $359 at home. If your cat is euthanized at the clinic, ask for that fee separately from the cremation.

Why is the range so wide?

Because extras vary more than the cremation itself. A weekday drop-off with a simple container sits at the low end; a weekend home collection with an engraved urn sits at the high end. Untick extras you don't need and the range narrows quickly.

Can I pay less by choosing communal cremation?

Yes. Communal cremation usually costs a fraction of private, commonly $45 to $75 for a small pet in the US. The trade-off is that no ashes come back. Some families choose communal and keep a paw print or fur clipping instead.
