What will your cat's goodbye cost in total?
Cremation is often the smallest part of the bill. A home visit alone averages about $359[1] for a cat in the US. Tick what you want and see the whole range in one place.

Using the planner
Building your cat's memorial budget
The planner lists the things families commonly pay for at the end of a pet's life: euthanasia at a clinic or at home, pickup, private cremation, an urn, jewelry, a memorial stone, a paw print, a small service and a memorial tree. Private cremation and an urn are ticked when the planner opens; tick anything else you want, untick what you don't, and each ticked line adds its low and high amount to a running total.
Every figure is editable. If you already have a quote, type it into both boxes. When you're done, copy or print the summary to share with a partner or keep for later. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
The method
Where the cat cost figures come from
clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[1]
For the cremation itself, CareCredit's weight-banded guide lists pets up to 30 lb at $45 to $75 communal and $100 to $175 private[2], which is where cats fall. By our calculation from those averages, a home visit for a cat costs roughly 2.27x[3] a clinic appointment, so it's usually the biggest single choice in the budget.
Items without a published average, such as urns, jewelry, stones and paw prints, use typical ranges from retailers and are marked as such in the tool. Urn prices vary most: a plain wooden box and a hand-thrown ceramic urn can differ by several hundred dollars. Stones are more predictable; by our estimate, engraved pet garden stones start at ~$39[4] at the median of three US sellers.
Two worked examples
Example budgets: a simple goodbye and a fuller memorial
| Item | Simple goodbye | Fuller memorial |
|---|---|---|
| Euthanasia | Clinic: $110 to $200 | At home: $325 to $450 |
| Pickup | Not needed | Included with home visit or $50 to $150 |
| Cremation | Private: $100 to $175 | Private: $100 to $175 |
| Urn | Untick the urn line: $0 | Ceramic cat urn: $60 to $150 |
| Paw print | Home-made clay: under $15 | Professional print: $25 to $75 |
| Jewelry or stone | None | Pendant: $50 to $150 |
| Approximate total | About $210 to $390 | About $560 to $1,150 |
Both are loving goodbyes. The simple budget focuses on the essentials and keeps the ashes in the container they come home in, which many people later move to an urn when they're ready. The fuller one adds a home visit, which many cat owners value because it spares a frightened cat the carrier and the car. If you're weighing that choice, our guide to working with your vet on end-of-life care explains how home visits are booked and what happens on the day, and the paw print and fur keepsake guide shows how to make the home-made clay print in the simple budget.

Help with costs
Does insurance or anything else help with the bill?
Standard pet insurance rarely covers aftercare. In the US, Embrace notes that euthanasia may be covered when medically necessary, but cremation usually isn't[5]. UK policies such as Petplan's follow the same pattern. Some insurers sell end-of-life add-ons; one US add-on reimbursed up to $500[6] toward euthanasia, cremation and memorial items.
If money is tight, communal cremation, a home-made paw print and a planted memorial can cost very little. Shelters and humane societies sometimes offer lower-cost euthanasia with communal cremation, and the ASPCA's end-of-life care guide explains hospice and aftercare choices in plain terms. In the UK, the competition regulator's final report now requires vet practices to offer a communal option and set out prices[7]. Worry about cost is common, with one US study finding it concerned 61%[8] of owners. Our guide to comparing cat cremation quotes shows where to save without cutting corners.

What the budget planner doesn't include
- Veterinary treatment in the final weeks, which can cost far more than aftercare.
- Travel, time off work or care for your other cats on the day.
- Local taxes and surcharges, which vary by state and country.
- Ongoing fees, such as yearly pet cemetery maintenance.
For cremation-only estimates by country, the cremation cost calculator goes into more detail, including UK and Australian prices.

What to do next
Turning your budget into a plan
Share the summary with anyone involved in the decision, then ask providers for written quotes on the items you've kept. If a home visit is on your list, book it early, since those vets often fill up. For the goodbye itself, the farewell planner turns your ideas into a simple checklist.
If you'd rather have someone gather local prices, send us your town and budget and we'll email the options we find. For a full list of services, see cat cremation services.

Questions people ask
What does it cost in total when a cat dies?
For a simple goodbye with clinic euthanasia and private cremation, many US owners pay around $200 to $400. Adding a home visit, a decorative urn and a keepsake can take the total to $600 to $1,100 or more. Communal cremation with no ashes returned lowers the total considerably.
Is a home euthanasia visit worth the extra cost for a cat?
For many cats, yes. Cats often find carriers, cars and clinics stressful, and a home visit lets them stay somewhere familiar. In the US it averages a little over twice the clinic price for cats. If the cost is a stretch, ask your clinic for a quiet room and a time at the end of the day.
Can I use the planner outside the US?
Yes. Switch the currency to pounds, Canadian dollars or Australian dollars and type in your local quotes. The starting figures are US amounts and aren't converted, so replace each ticked line with a local price. For UK, Canadian or Australian cremation ranges, use the cremation cost calculator first and copy the result into the planner.
Does pet insurance pay for my cat's cremation?
Usually not on a standard policy. Many insurers cover euthanasia when it's medically necessary but exclude cremation and burial. Some offer optional end-of-life or wellness add-ons that reimburse part of the cost. Check your policy documents or call your insurer before you book.
