How much does cat cremation cost, and what should the quote include?
CareCredit's 2025 figures put a typical US cat cremation at about $180[1]. The cremation is rarely the biggest number, though: the goodbye, the collection and the urn decide your real total.

The short answer
How much does it cost to cremate a cat?
In the US, private cat cremation (your own cat's ashes returned) usually costs $100 to $250, and communal cremation (no ashes back) often starts around $50. Add a clinic euthanasia and a typical all-in figure is about $340; with a home visit it's closer to $540, before any upgraded urn.
Those two totals come straight from CareCredit's 2025 averages: $158 for euthanasia at a clinic, $359 at home, and $180 for the cremation itself[1]. Cats sit in the lowest weight band at nearly every crematory, so the cremation line is small. It's the extras that stretch the bill.

What does cat cremation cost in the UK, Canada, Australia and Ireland?
The UK has the most detailed data, thanks to the Competition and Markets Authority's review of vet services. It found large vet groups charging a median of GBP 186.87[4] for an individual cat cremation, against about £128[5] at independent practices and £160[6] listed by independent crematoria. In its final report, the regulator estimated owners may be overpaying by about £100[7] per individual cremation.

An Australian provider survey of listed prices puts the median individual cremation at AUD 412 for pets up to 5 kg (range AUD 295-612).

The CMA concluded UK pet owners may be paying in the order of GBP 100 more for individual cremations than under strong price competition.

- Canada: clinic euthanasia around Toronto and Hamilton runs about CAD 150 to 300 for cats[10], and one SPCA bundles euthanasia with communal cremation for CAD 225 to 275 plus tax[11].
- Ireland: one crematorium lists individual cremation at EUR 250 for cats up to 10 kg[12], with a lower price for very small pets.

Line items
What's included in a cat cremation quote, and what costs extra?
A basic private cremation price normally covers the cremation, processing the remains into fine ash, a plain container or scatter tube, and often a certificate. Almost everything else is a separate line, and some providers fold extras into a package so the base price looks lower than it is.
- Collection. Pickup from your vet is often included; pickup from home, especially at night or on a weekend, often isn't.
- Rush return. Faster turnaround usually adds +$50–$150[13] to the bill; the standard wait is closer to a week (see how long cat ashes take to come back).
- Being present. Viewing or witnessing the cremation typically adds +$25–$100[14], where it's offered at all.
- The urn. A carved wooden box, a photo frame urn or engraving can cost more than the cremation.
- Keepsakes. Clay paw prints, fur clippings and ink nose prints are small charges that add up quickly.
- Vet handling fee. Some clinics add a charge for storing your cat and arranging the handover.
- Tax. In the UK, VAT is usually included in the listed price; in the US, check whether sales tax applies to the urn.

The biggest variable
How much more does an at-home goodbye cost?
For most cat owners, the choice between a clinic and a home visit moves the total more than the choice of cremation type. By our calculation from CareCredit's averages, US at-home euthanasia for cats costs about 2.27x[15] the clinic price, and travel, evening or holiday surcharges can push it higher.
Many families still choose it. A cat who has hated the carrier for fifteen years doesn't have to ride in it one last time, and you avoid the waiting room. Home-visit vets often arrange the cremation too, which is convenient, but ask for the cremation price as its own line so you can see it. Paying for it
Will pet insurance pay for any of it?
Usually only part. Standard US policies tend to cover euthanasia when it's medically necessary for a covered condition, but not cremation[16]. Petplan UK works the same way[17]. Cremation money normally comes from an optional add-on you bought beforehand.
Examples from 2023 plan documents: Lemonade's end-of-life add-on reimbursed up to $500[18] across euthanasia, cremation and memorial items; Embrace's wellness add-on could pay up to $650[19] toward cremation, burial and keepsakes; Figo's pack paid up to $250[20]. Terms change, so read your current policy wording or call the insurer before the day, not after.

How do you compare two written quotes line by line?
Very few people compare at all. In the UK, 89%[21] of owners who paid for a pet cremation never looked at a second provider, and only 2%[22] of vet websites that showed prices listed cremation costs. UK clinics must now offer a communal option and publish prices[23], but elsewhere you usually have to ask.
Ask each provider to email the total, broken down. Then set the two quotes next to each other and check every row below. A cheaper headline price with three extras bolted on is often the more expensive quote.

Spending wisely
How can you lower the cost without cutting corners?
Worrying about money at a time like this is normal, and it doesn't mean you loved your cat any less. In a US study of owners' end-of-life expectations, 61%[24] of owners said aftercare costs concerned them. A few choices make a real difference:
- Choose the basic container and buy an urn separately later; plain pet urns start at about $50[25].
- Ask the crematory directly for its price, then ask your vet to use it.
- Take the paw print and a fur clipping yourself at home, for the cost of air-dry clay and scissors.
- Collect your cat's ashes in person if delivery is extra.
- Consider communal cremation if having the ashes back isn't what matters to you.

Questions people ask
Why is my vet's cremation price higher than the crematory's?
Your vet is usually reselling the crematory's service and adding a margin for storing your cat, doing the paperwork and handling the return. That work has value, but the markup varies a lot. Working from UK regulator data, we estimate large vet groups charge about 15%[26] more than independent crematoria for the same pet size. You can always ask your vet to use a crematory you've contacted yourself.
Is cat cremation cheaper than dog cremation?
Usually, yes. Crematories price by weight band, and most cats weigh 8 to 15 lb, which puts them in the lowest band alongside small dogs and rabbits. The difference is often larger for private cremation than for communal. A very large dog can cost two or three times as much to cremate privately as a typical house cat.
Does a big cat like a Maine Coon cost more to cremate?
Sometimes. Many crematories group everything under 20 or 30 lb together, so a 17 lb Maine Coon pays the same as a 9 lb tabby. Others use narrower bands that start at 10 or 15 lb. Give the provider your cat's last recorded weight from the vet so the quote is accurate from the start.
Do I have to pay for cat cremation upfront?
Practices differ. If your vet arranges it, the cremation usually appears on the final clinic bill, paid on the day. Independent crematories often take payment at collection or when the ashes are returned. Home-visit vets typically charge for the visit and the cremation together at the appointment. Ask how and when payment is due when you get the quote.
Are there low-cost cat cremation options through shelters?
In some areas, yes. Humane societies, SPCAs and some municipal animal services offer communal cremation, sometimes bundled with euthanasia, at prices below private clinics. In Ontario, for example, one SPCA bundles both for cats at CAD 225 to 275. Availability, waiting lists and eligibility rules vary, so call your local shelter directly and ask what they offer.
Is the cheapest quote always the one to choose?
Not necessarily. Two quotes can differ because one includes home collection, a wooden box and delivery while the other covers only the cremation. Compare the full total for the same service. Also check the cremation type is described identically, because a low 'individual' price may be for a partitioned cremation rather than a private one.
