How many keepsakes can a cat's ashes fill?
More than most people expect. A typical house cat leaves a few ounces of ash, and most ash jewelry needs only a pinch: a pendant holds a pinch (at most about a teaspoon)[2] and an ashes-in-glass bead as little as 1/8–1/2 tsp[3]. Only a memorial diamond uses a large share, and for a small cat it may use most of what you have.
Cremated remains typically weigh 3-5% of body weight[4]. By our estimate, a 12 lb cat returns about 6.7 oz[1] of ash, applying the 3.5%-of-body-weight ratio from a study of 100 commercial cremations. That fills about 12 cubic inches, which is around 40 teaspoons. After a pendant for you and one for a sibling, you'd still have well over 90% left for an urn or scattering.
Everything here assumes private cremation, where only your cat is in the chamber. With communal cremation, no ashes come back. Cremation pendants: how they hold ash and how to seal one
A cremation pendant has a tiny hollow chamber closed by a screw plug. Prices cover a wide spread, about $30–$300+[5] overall, from stainless steel necklaces from $19.95[6] to sterling silver at roughly $88–$298[7] at one US retailer. Taking the middle of three sellers' price points, our estimate for a typical sterling silver pet pendant is ~$190[8]. Paw-print and cat-silhouette shapes are easy to find, and many can be engraved on the back.
- Work over a sheet of white paper on a tray, away from fans, open windows and curious cats.
- Spoon a small amount of ash onto the paper. Cat ashes are gritty, so pick the finest portion; larger fragments block the opening.
- Use the little funnel that usually comes with the pendant, and tap the pendant gently as you fill. Stop at about two-thirds full so the plug seats cleanly.
- Wipe the threads, add one drop of jewelry adhesive or clear epoxy, and screw the plug in firmly. Let it cure overnight before wearing.
- Pour the leftover ash on the paper back into the urn by folding the sheet into a spout.
Even sealed, most pendants are not built for daily swimming or showers. Take it off for water, sleep and the gym, and check the plug every few months.

In ashes-in-glass work, an artist fuses a sprinkle of cremated remains into molten glass, where it shows as fine pale swirls or specks. You choose colors, often matched to your cat's coat: a ginger swirl, tortoiseshell flecks, grey-blue for a Russian Blue. Studios typically ship 2–8 weeks[9] after receiving the ash.
Rings set ash under resin or glass in a channel or bezel. UK maker prices show the range well: one studio sells pet-ash rings at £165–£300[10], and a glass pendant from an English glassworks costs about £170, with paperweights at £195–£240[11]. A paperweight is a good choice for someone who doesn't wear jewelry; it sits on a desk where the cat used to walk across the keyboard.

Can you make a memorial diamond from a cat's ashes?
Yes, but check the minimum before you commit, because a cat's small amount of ash is where problems arise. One US lab needs ~100 g[12] of remains, which is roughly half of what a 12 lb cat returns. A Swiss lab asks for at least 150 g[13], which a small or elderly cat may not produce at all.

Keepsake urns and splitting ashes among family
A keepsake urn is a miniature urn, usually holding a few cubic inches, meant for a portion of the ashes. They typically cost $15–$60[17]; one reference puts a single keepsake at about $28 and a matching set of six at around $115[18]. Sets are handy when a cat belonged to several people, such as grown children who've moved out or a partner in another city.
Before you divide anything, agree on who wants what. Someone may want a pendant, someone a small urn, someone nothing at all, and that's fine. How to choose a keepsake maker and send ashes safely
Pendants you fill yourself carry little risk. Glass, rings and diamonds mean mailing part of your cat to a stranger, so ask a few questions first:
- How much ash do you need, exactly? Send only that plus a little margin, never the whole urn.
- What happens to any ash you don't use? Some return it; some dispose of it respectfully. Know which.
- How do you keep orders separate? Look for labeled containers and a named, tracked process.
- What's the real timeline, and what if a piece breaks? Ask about repairs, resizing and remakes.
- Which shipping method do you want? If ashes travel by mail within the US, the Postal Service requires Priority Mail Express and its branded cremated-remains packaging, as explained in USPS Publication 139, and many private couriers won't take them, so ask how the maker ships.

Questions people ask
Can I open my cat's urn to fill a pendant later?
Usually, yes. Most pet urns open from the base with screws or a sliding panel, and the ashes are often inside a sealed plastic bag. Open it on a table, snip a small corner of the bag or unfasten the tie, take what you need with a small spoon, then reseal the bag with a clip or tape. It's worth doing once, calmly, rather than opening the urn many times.
Are ashes in jewelry visible?
In a sealed metal pendant they're hidden completely. In glass, resin and some rings they show as pale grey or white specks or swirls, and artists can adjust the glass color so the ash reads as texture. A memorial diamond shows no visible ash; its color comes from growth conditions and any trace elements.
Is cremation jewelry safe to wear every day?
A well-sealed stainless steel or sterling silver pendant is fine for daily wear, but water, soap and knocks slowly weaken the seal. Take it off for showers, swimming and sleep, and check the plug now and then. If you'd be heartbroken to lose it, consider a piece meant for special occasions and a cheaper everyday version.
How do we fairly split one cat's ashes between several people?
Start by weighing or measuring the total, then decide shares by what each person actually wants to keep, not by equal division. A pendant needs only a pinch, a keepsake urn a few teaspoons. Use a clean spoon and a kitchen scale, fill each container over paper, and keep the main portion together in one urn.
Can I add my cat's ashes to a tattoo?
Some tattoo artists will mix a tiny amount of finely sifted ash into ink, but many refuse because of infection risk and there's no sterile standard for it. If you're considering it, talk with a licensed artist first and ask how they'd prepare the ash. Many people choose a portrait or paw-print tattoo without ashes instead.
Do I need to order jewelry before the cremation?
No. Ash jewelry can be made weeks, months or years later, as long as you keep the ashes. The only things that must be arranged before cremation are fur, whisker and paw-print keepsakes, and any request for the crematory to set aside a portion or fill a pendant for you.
