Getting help for your cat in Zurich
The city's waste and recycling service, ERZ, publishes guidance on animal remains. It runs an ordinary intake route for small animals and pets, and it also describes cremation and, under certain conditions, burial options for pets. Large animals such as cattle and horses go through a separate specialist transport route, with categories based on weight as well as animal type. To get your pet's ashes back, the cremation has to be an individual one, so request that explicitly.
Most people in Zurich live in apartments, and many rent, so pets here often share compact flats in older buildings in districts like Wiedikon or Oerlikon. In an older building without a lift, carrying your pet down may need two people, and street parking near the entrance can be scarce. Many families call their vet first, since clinics can often keep a pet briefly and help arrange cremation.
Families in Zurich usually have several vets and at least one crematory within a short drive, which gives you room to choose. If your cat trusted a particular clinic team, that bond counts; many people want familiar hands at the end. If price or a witnessed cremation matters more, calling a crematory directly is completely normal. You can also mix the two: the goodbye with your own vet, the cremation arranged by you.

Cremation in Switzerland, and what it means for cat owners
When cremation is as routine as it is in Switzerland (roughly 90%[1] of human funerals), the risk is assuming rather than asking. A busy clinic may note "cremation" without saying which kind. Say the words you mean, private with ashes returned or communal without, and ask for them on the form. It's a two-minute check that prevents a mistake nobody can fix later.

Weather, timing and your cat in Zurich
Whatever the season, ask any provider near Zurich where your cat will wait between collection and cremation. A good crematory keeps animals in refrigerated storage and can tell you roughly how long your cat will be there. In warm weather that answer matters more; in cold weather it mostly affects when the ashes come home.

Burial and scattering rules for Switzerland
Most of the decisions after a cat dies are yours alone. The exceptions are burial and scattering, which Switzerland and your local council or city may regulate, and, in some places, updating your cat's microchip record so the database knows they've died.
City of Zürich Entsorgung + Recycling Zürich publishes Zurich's official guidance. Note that it deals with public collection, not with booking a private cremation.
Switzerland has about 1,520,000[5] pet cats, roughly three times its dogs. Pet crematoria in most regions offer individual cremation with the ashes returned, and your vet can arrange collection. Rules on burying a cat on your own land are set by the canton and commune. Ask for a written quote in CHF covering collection, the cremation and the urn.
What to do when your cat dies in Zurich
- If it's a child's cat, tell them simply and truthfully that the cat has died and won't come back. Avoid "put to sleep" with young children; it can make bedtime frightening.
- Let the child say goodbye in whatever way they choose, whether that's a last stroke, a picture slipped into the box or picking which blanket goes with the cat.
- Offer a small job: choosing a photograph, printing the name that will go on the urn, looking after the collar. Having a task makes the loss easier for a child to carry.
- Phone the clinic or a Zurich pet crematory once the goodbye is done, and choose private cremation if the child will want the ashes back.
- Warn school or daycare about what's happened at home, so the staff understand if your child seems withdrawn or tearful.

Ways to remember your cat locally
Zurich winters bring cold, grey days and occasional snow, and summers can be warm. In summer, lay your pet on a cool floor wrapped in a towel with cold packs, and contact your vet or a provider promptly. In winter, a cellar storage room can help for a short time, as long as the body is well wrapped. Burial in your own garden is only possible under certain conditions, so check first.

Is cremation common in Switzerland?
For people, yes: about 90%[1] of Switzerland deaths end in cremation, according to bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Zurich follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Zurich?
Usually yes. Zollikon is about 3 miles away, Kusnacht is about 4 miles away and Lucerne is about 25 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How much does cat cremation cost in Zurich?
Prices depend on the country and whether you choose individual or communal cremation, but cats are always in the lowest weight band. Published examples include about AUD 412 in Australia for pets up to 5 kg[6] and €250 in Ireland for cats up to 10 kg[7]. Ask Zurich providers for a written quote in local currency that lists collection and the container.
Is there a pet crematory in Zurich itself?
Sometimes, but it matters less than you'd think. Crematories need space and permits, so many sit on the edge of town or in a larger centre such as Zurich. Should my other cats see the cat who died?
Many owners let their other cats sniff and sit with the body for a few minutes before collection, and it does no harm. Some cats show interest, others walk away; both are normal. Afterwards, keep feeding and litter routines steady. If a remaining cat stops eating for more than a day or two, call your vet, as cats don't cope well with going without food.
Should I choose cremation or burial for my cat?
Surveys in the US and UK point the same way: roughly two-thirds of bereaved owners choose cremation and about 30% choose burial[8]. A cat's small size makes a garden burial easy where it's allowed, but cremation is simpler if you rent, might move or want your cat close. You can combine them by burying the ashes.
