Cremation in Switzerland, and what it means for cat owners

Providers in high-cremation areas often stock small urns sized for cats, keepsake lockets and whisker or fur vials, because families ask for them. Look at the full range before you choose; with so little ash, even a tiny keepsake box will do.

Local rules in Zurich
One rule matters more than any other if your cat bit or scratched someone in the last couple of weeks, or died after sudden changes in behavior: tell your vet before anything else. Where rabies occurs, public health rules may require testing, and that has to happen before cremation. In almost every other case, the rules below only come into play once you choose what to do with the ashes or the body.
Switzerland has about 1,520,000[7] pet cats, roughly three times its dogs. Pet crematoria in most regions offer individual cremation with the ashes returned, and your vet can arrange collection. Rules on burying a cat on your own land are set by the canton and commune. Ask for a written quote in CHF covering collection, the cremation and the urn.
A simple checklist for the next two days
- If your cat dies at night, you don't need to call anyone until morning. Move your cat to a cool room and cover them with a towel.
- Put a towel or pad underneath. It's normal for a cat's bladder or bowels to release after death.
- Gently curl your cat into a sleeping position within the first few hours, before the body stiffens. It makes the box or basket easier and the goodbye gentler.
- In the morning, call your vet or a crematory that serves Zollikon. Tell them where your cat is and whether you can bring them in.
- Ask for the price in writing, and make sure it covers pickup, the type of cremation (private or communal) and whatever the ashes come home in.
- Take a paw print, a lock of fur or their collar before collection if you'd like a keepsake.

Is cremation common in Switzerland?
For people, yes: about 90%[1] of Switzerland deaths end in cremation, according to bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Zollikon follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Will I have to travel to Zurich to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Zurich (roughly 3 miles from Zollikon) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Zollikon?
Usually yes. Kusnacht is about 2 miles away, Zurich is about 3 miles away and Lucerne is about 24 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Can I bury my cat in the garden in Zurich?
In many places you can, with conditions such as depth, distance from water and owning the property. Rules vary within Zurich, so check with your city or council before digging. Dig deep enough to keep foxes, coyotes and dogs away. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your cat with you and bury the ashes later if you wish.
Should my other cats see the cat who died?
Many owners let their other cats sniff and sit with the body for a few minutes before collection, and it does no harm. Some cats show interest, others walk away; both are normal. Afterwards, keep feeding and litter routines steady. If a remaining cat stops eating for more than a day or two, call your vet, as cats don't cope well with going without food.
What's the difference between private and communal cremation for a cat?
In a private cremation your cat is cremated alone and every bit of ash returned is theirs. In a communal cremation several animals are cremated together and no ashes come back; they're usually scattered in a memorial garden. Some providers also offer partitioned cremation, where pets share the chamber with dividers. Private typically costs about 2.0x[8] the communal price.
