Cat Cremation in Zurich: what to know
Cat cremation across Zurich works much the same way everywhere, but the details change with where you live. In the big cities, most cats live indoors, and you'll usually have several crematories, home-euthanasia vets and overnight emergency clinics to choose from. In smaller towns, more cats live indoor-outdoor lives, the local vet typically arranges everything and the ashes may take a few extra days to come back.
Whether you're in one of the larger cities like Zurich, Kusnacht and Zollikon or a small town, the questions to ask are the same: is it private, how is my cat identified, what's the total price in writing and when will the ashes come home? This guide explains the picture for Zurich, and each city page goes deeper.

Cremation traditions in Zurich
Zurich is one of the places where cremation is the clear norm, at about 90%[1] for people, and for most cat owners it will feel like the natural choice too. Still, give it a moment's thought. Would you like to keep the ashes, scatter them in the garden your cat watched from the window, or bury them under a plant? The answer decides whether you need a decorative urn now or a simple sealed container until you're ready.
That Zurich rate is a human statistic published by bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.
Cat cremation prices for Zurich families
Cats outnumber dogs in much of Europe: there are about 108.3 million[2] pet cats on the continent against 89.6 million[3] dogs. Prices follow the same logic everywhere: collective cremation costs less than individual, and a cat sits in the lowest weight band. The table shows published examples to give you a feel for Switzerland.
Across Europe, about 9.2 million[4] pet cats die each year, by our estimate, so every pet crematorium near Zurich handles cats routinely. Ask whether the cremation is individual, whether you can be present and whether the ashes come back to your vet or to your home. For a cat, a small urn or keepsake box is usually enough.
| Country | Collective (communal) | Individual (private) |

What Zurich allows: burial, scattering and more
If your cat was put to sleep, the drug used stays in the body after death and can poison a dog, fox or bird of prey that digs up a grave. That's why many authorities discourage burying euthanized pets anywhere animals can reach them, and why cremation is simpler for most families. The notes below show what Zurich says about burial and scattering.
Switzerland has about 1,520,000[9] pet cats, roughly three times its dogs. Pet crematoria in most regions offer individual cremation with the ashes returned, and your vet can arrange collection. Rules on burying a cat on your own land are set by the canton and commune. Ask for a written quote in CHF covering collection, the cremation and the urn.
Step by step in Zurich
- If the death was expected, your vet may already have a plan with you. Call them and confirm it.
- If it was sudden, an accident on the road, a fall, an illness nobody saw coming, phone your own vet or whichever emergency clinic is closest to Zurich. They will walk you through what to do next.
- Keep your cat cool and indoors, in a box with a lid and a towel around them, which matters most when the weather is warm.
- Gather a few things to send with your cat, like a favorite blanket, a toy mouse or a note from the children.
- Ask the provider three questions: is it private, how is my cat identified, and when will the ashes come back?
- Confirm the price in writing, pickup fee and container included, before anyone collects your cat.
Keeping your cat's memory close in Zurich
Most cats share well over a decade with their people; in one large US study, cats had an average life expectancy of about 11.18 years[10] (Banfield data). That's a lot of ordinary days to remember. Some Zurich families make a memory box with the collar, a favorite toy and a few photos of the spots their cat claimed. If the grief is heavier than you expected, our grief check-in can help you notice how you're doing.

Questions people ask
Do I need a permit to have my cat cremated in Zurich?
No. Families don't need a permit to have a cat cremated anywhere we cover. Any licensing applies to the crematory itself, and rules on burial and scattering are set separately. If you plan to bury your cat's body in the garden or scatter ashes on public land, check the local rules for that part first.
Can a vet come to my home to put my cat to sleep anywhere in Zurich?
In and around larger cities, mobile vets who offer home euthanasia are common, and they're especially popular with cat owners because it avoids the carrier and the car. In rural parts of Zurich, coverage is patchier and travel fees are more likely. Your regular vet may visit even if they don't advertise it, so ask.
How long does it take to get my cat's ashes back in Zurich?
Many families receive their cat's ashes within one to two weeks. In large cities it can be faster; in rural areas where pets travel to a regional crematory it may take a little longer. Small pets' ashes are sometimes returned via your vet or by courier. Ask for an expected date when you book.
How many communities do you cover in Zurich?
We currently have local cat cremation guides for 3 communities in Zurich, including Zurich, Kusnacht and Zollikon. Each page covers local weather and timing, prices, rules and how pickup usually works there.
Can I bury my cat in the garden in Zurich?
Often yes, with conditions such as burial depth, distance from wells and waterways and whether you own the land. Cities, councils and landlords can be stricter than the wider rules. Dig deep enough to keep foxes and dogs away. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your cat with you and bury the ashes later.
Where can I scatter my cat's ashes in Zurich?
Your own garden is the simplest place, and private land with the owner's permission is fine too. Parks, beaches and public land usually have their own rules. Because a cat's ashes are only a cup or so, many families scatter a little and keep the rest in a small urn or keepsake at home.
