Cat Cremation in Switzerland

Cat Cremation in Switzerland: what to know

If you're living in Switzerland but may move abroad one day, cremation keeps your options open. A sealed container of a cat's ashes is small enough to travel in hand luggage with the crematorium's certificate, while a garden grave stays behind. Many expat families in Switzerland choose it for that reason, then decide on a final resting place years later.

Pet aftercare in Switzerland is shaped by a few national factors: how common pet cremation already is, whether garden burial is practical or allowed, how many cats live indoors or roam, and how vets and crematoria work together. The city pages below add local detail, but the basics here apply right across Switzerland.

We cover 8 communities in Switzerland, from Zurich, Geneva and Basel to smaller towns.

Why cremation is familiar in Switzerland, or isn't

When cremation is as routine as it is in Switzerland (roughly 90%[1] of human funerals), the risk is assuming rather than asking. A busy clinic may note "cremation" without saying which kind. Say the words you mean, private with ashes returned or communal without, and ask for them on the form. It's a two-minute check that prevents a mistake nobody can fix later.

The cremation figure for Switzerland comes from bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020). It counts people, not pets, so treat it as a guide to local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

What cat cremation costs in Switzerland

Some European pet insurers contribute to cremation costs: four Dutch insurers offer some reimbursement[2], for example. Check your policy before you pay in Switzerland. Also ask how long the ashes take; in Sweden, AniCura says ashes normally come back in 2-4 weeks[3], which is longer than many owners expect.

Published prices give a sense of the range. In Germany, collective pet cremation is listed at about €85 to €205 and individual at €165 to €375[4], with cats at the low end. An Irish crematorium lists individual cremation at €250 for cats up to 10 kg[5]. Prices in Switzerland depend on local providers, so ask for a written quote.

Local rules in Switzerland

Before you bury, scatter or plan a memorial, it's worth checking what Switzerland allows. Keeping ashes at home is allowed everywhere we know of. Burying a whole cat and scattering in public places are where rules come in, usually to protect water supplies and shared spaces, and renters normally need the landlord's permission for any garden burial.

Switzerland has about 1,520,000[8] pet cats, roughly three times its dogs. Pet crematoria in most regions offer individual cremation with the ashes returned, and your vet can arrange collection. Rules on burying a cat on your own land are set by the canton and commune. Ask for a written quote in CHF covering collection, the cremation and the urn.

What to do first, and what can wait

  1. If your cat is elderly or newly diagnosed, begin while there's time. A kidney, thyroid or cancer diagnosis often gives weeks or months to plan quietly.
  2. Ask your vet what the end is likely to look like for your cat's condition, and which signs mean it's time to talk again.
  3. Choose the aftercare now: private or communal cremation, and who collects your cat. Compare prices with our cost calculator while you're calm.
  4. Write your wishes down and ask the vet to add them to your cat's record, so an emergency hospital or a locum in Switzerland can follow them too.
  5. Pick the place for the goodbye: at home, in the clinic's quiet room or in the garden on a warm day. Save a mobile vet's number if you'd prefer home.
  6. Spend the good days well. Treats, a warm windowsill, a brush, a camera. The point of planning ahead is that the final stretch belongs to your cat rather than to the phone.

Memorials and keepsakes for your cat

Many people who have lost a cat find the quiet the hardest part: no voice at the kitchen door in the morning, no weight at the foot of the bed. Grief for a cat can be as heavy as any other loss. Pet-loss support lines, online groups and local counsellors in Switzerland all exist for exactly this, and using them is a sign of how much your cat mattered.

Questions people ask

How much does cat cremation cost in Switzerland?

Prices across Switzerland depend mostly on whether you choose private or communal cremation, plus any home pickup or urn upgrade; a cat's weight barely changes the price. Big-city providers may charge more for same-day collection, while rural areas may add mileage. Ask for an itemized written total before you agree.

Is cat cremation cheaper in small towns in Switzerland?

Sometimes, but not always. Small-town vets often have lower fees and a set collection day with a regional crematory, which keeps costs down. On the other hand, mileage charges for a home collection can cost more than the cremation of a cat. Bringing your cat in yourself is the easiest saving anywhere.

How many communities do you cover in Switzerland?

We currently have local cat cremation guides for 8 communities in Switzerland, including Zurich, Geneva and Basel. Each page covers local weather and timing, prices, rules and how pickup usually works there.

How long does it take to get my cat's ashes back in Switzerland?

Many families receive their cat's ashes within one to two weeks. In large cities it can be faster; in rural areas where pets travel to a regional crematory it may take a little longer. Small pets' ashes are sometimes returned via your vet or by courier. Ask for an expected date when you book.

Do I need a permit to have my cat cremated in Switzerland?

No. Families don't need a permit to have a cat cremated anywhere we cover. Any licensing applies to the crematory itself, and rules on burial and scattering are set separately. If you plan to bury your cat's body in the garden or scatter ashes on public land, check the local rules for that part first.

Do cats outnumber dogs in Switzerland?

In much of Europe, yes: the continent has about 108.3 million[9] pet cats against 89.6 million[10] dogs. The balance differs by country, and in a few places dogs still lead. Either way, every pet crematorium in Switzerland handles cats routinely, and individual cremation for a cat sits in the lowest price band.
