Switzerland is one of the places where cremation is the clear norm, at about 90%[1] for people, and for most cat owners it will feel like the natural choice too. Still, give it a moment's thought. Would you like to keep the ashes, scatter them in the garden your cat watched from the window, or bury them under a plant? The answer decides whether you need a decorative urn now or a simple sealed container until you're ready.

Lausanne weather and timing

What's allowed in Vaud after your cat dies
Most of the decisions after a cat dies are yours alone. The exceptions are burial and scattering, which Vaud and your local council or city may regulate, and, in some places, updating your cat's microchip record so the database knows they've died.
Switzerland has about 1,520,000[7] pet cats, roughly three times its dogs. Pet crematoria in most regions offer individual cremation with the ashes returned, and your vet can arrange collection. Rules on burying a cat on your own land are set by the canton and commune. Ask for a written quote in CHF covering collection, the cremation and the urn.
A simple checklist for the next two days
- If your cat dies at night, you don't need to call anyone until morning. Move your cat to a cool room and cover them with a towel.
- Put a towel or pad underneath. It's normal for a cat's bladder or bowels to release after death.
- Gently curl your cat into a sleeping position within the first few hours, before the body stiffens. It makes the box or basket easier and the goodbye gentler.
- In the morning, call your vet or a crematory covering Lausanne. Let them know where your cat is now and whether you're able to drive them over.

It doesn't mean your cat was frightened of you or that you missed something obvious; cats are very good at concealing illness until late. Many owners find their cat this way, and it's okay to need help with what comes next.
