Cat cremation in Ghent

Ghent, Flanders

Cat aftercare in Ghent: the local picture

Ghent's climate is mild, grey and damp off the North Sea, with few hard frosts and summers that can bring muggy spells, especially during the crowded Gentse Feesten week in July. Because the city rarely gets properly cold, don't count on winter to buy much time. Put your pet on a folded blanket in the coolest room, keep wrapped cold packs close to the body, and arrange collection or a vet visit within the day.

Many Flemish row houses in Ghent have a long, narrow city garden at the back, and some families bury a small pet there where rules allow, while many more choose cremation and an urn indoors. Belgian vets commonly arrange cremation on your behalf. Ask them plainly whether it will be individual, so the ashes are your pet's alone, what the total cost is, and when you can collect the urn.

Costs in Ghent usually sit close to national typical ranges for cats, but they vary with what's bundled in. One quote might include collection from home, a small wooden urn and a clay paw print; another lists each separately and looks cheaper at first. Neither is wrong. Ask for everything in writing, then compare like for like: private versus private, the same pickup, the same container.

About 262,000 people live in Ghent, which makes it the 2nd-largest of the 2 Flanders communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Ghent are based about 32 miles away in Antwerp, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.

Families in Ghent often end up using a provider from Brussels (31 miles, a larger centre) and Antwerp (32 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

67.98%[1]

In 2023, 67.98% of deaths in Belgium were cremated (21 crematoria).

clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[2]

CareCredit's 2025 study put US cat euthanasia at $158 in clinic and $359 at home, cat cremation at $180 and cat cemetery burial at $566.

3-5% of body weight[3]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

We built the this numbers from Embrace Pet Insurance and CareCredit (Synchrony), and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

The local attitude to cremation

About 67.98%[1] of people in Belgium are cremated, a figure that has been rising for years. Pet cremation has followed the same curve. More cat owners now bring the ashes home than bury their cat in the garden, especially in towns and suburbs where yards are small or rented, and where an indoor cat never really used the garden anyway.

That Belgium rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Ghent only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

How Ghent's weather affects the first few hours

Seasonal weather also shapes what happens afterwards. Scattering in wind or burying ashes in wet or frozen soil is harder than it sounds, so many families in Ghent keep the urn at home for a while and choose a calm, dry day for any outdoor memorial. There's no time limit on ashes.

What cat owners in Ghent typically pay

Some European pet insurers contribute to cremation costs: four Dutch insurers offer some reimbursement[4], for example. Check your policy before you pay in Ghent. Also ask how long the ashes take; in Sweden, AniCura says ashes normally come back in 2-4 weeks[5], which is longer than many owners expect.

Rules worth knowing in Flanders

Most of the decisions after a cat dies are yours alone. The exceptions are burial and scattering, which Flanders and your local council or city may regulate, and, in some places, updating your cat's microchip record so the database knows they've died.

Belgium has about 3,079,000[7] pet cats, well ahead of its dogs. Pet crematoria serve all three regions, and your vet can usually arrange individual or collective cremation. Where you may scatter ashes or bury a cat depends on your commune, so ask them before choosing a spot.

Step by step in Ghent

  1. Say goodbye in your own way. Nobody is waiting on you. Plenty of people spend an hour or two beside their cat, and holding them is perfectly fine.
  2. Let your other cats see the body if you have them. Some sniff and walk away, some lie down beside their companion. Either is normal.
  3. Make a keepsake if you'd like one. A paw print must be taken before cremation, and fur is easier to clip now too.
  4. Contact a provider through your vet or directly. We can also send you local options.
  5. Choose private or communal, then have the provider put that choice in writing.
  6. Plan where the ashes will go. There's no deadline on this. What comes back from a cat is small enough to keep in a modest container on a shelf until you know what you want.

Memorials and keepsakes for your cat

Ghent is a compact city of canals, narrow streets and tall townhouses, and since the 2017 circulation plan, cars can no longer drive straight through the center, so many residents get around by bicycle and tram. If your pet dies at home, getting your animal to a vet may need planning, especially from an upstairs flat in the old town. Mention your street, the stairs and whether you have a car when you ask for options.

Questions people ask

Where are the providers that serve Ghent actually based?

Some are local, and some run from Antwerp, about 32 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Ghent and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Ghent?

Usually yes. Brussels is about 31 miles away and Antwerp is about 32 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Why does the Ghent page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 67.98%[1] of Belgium residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

What if my cat died outdoors or was hit by a car near Ghent?

Bring gloves, a towel and a box, lift your cat gently and take them home or straight to your vet. A vet can scan for a microchip if you're not sure it's your cat, and can arrange cremation from there. A private cremation is still entirely possible, and so is a proper goodbye; the circumstances don't change that. Take someone with you if you can.

Can I take my cat to the crematory myself?

Usually, yes, and with a cat it's easy. Call first to agree a time, then place your cat in a carrier or a box lined with a blanket, on the floor or back seat of the car, and drive straight there. Many families find this last drive meaningful. It also saves the collection fee, which for a cat can be a large part of the total.

Why did my cat hide before they died?

Hiding is instinct. A cat who feels ill or weak looks for somewhere small, quiet and protected, like under a bed, in a closet or beneath a deck. It doesn't mean your cat was frightened of you or that you missed something obvious; cats are very good at concealing illness until late. Many owners find their cat this way, and it's okay to need help with what comes next.
