Brussels families make the most of the Bois de la Cambre, the Parc du Cinquantenaire and the edge of the Sonian Forest, and flat-dwellers often keep smaller pets whose whole world was a sunny windowsill or a balcony. Either way, many owners here choose individual cremation so they can bring the ashes home. Ask for written confirmation of the type of cremation, and check whether your commune has its own guidance on pet burial if you do have a garden.
Belgium's damp, changeable climate means cool temperatures for much of the year, which gives you a little breathing room if your pet dies at home. Keep the body in the coolest room, on a blanket, away from radiators. In summer heat waves, which Brussels now sees more often, arrange cremation within a day and ask about refrigerated storage if the weekend gets in the way.

The local attitude to cremation
Cremation is chosen for about 67.98%[1] of people in Belgium, but plenty of households here have always buried their cats under a favorite tree. Both are loving choices. We'd only suggest choosing on purpose rather than by default: find out what each option costs and involves, then decide what fits your cat, your home and your plans.

What Brussels-Capital allows: burial, scattering and more
Most of the decisions after a cat dies are yours alone. The exceptions are burial and scattering, which Brussels-Capital and your local council or city may regulate, and, in some places, updating your cat's microchip record so the database knows they've died.
Belgium has about 3,079,000[7] pet cats, well ahead of its dogs. Pet crematoria serve all three regions, and your vet can usually arrange individual or collective cremation. Where you may scatter ashes or bury a cat depends on your commune, so ask them before choosing a spot.
What to do when your cat dies in Brussels
- If your cat dies at night, nobody needs a phone call before daylight. Carry your cat to the coolest room in the house and lay a towel over them.
- Put a towel or pad underneath. After death the bladder and bowels often empty, which is ordinary.
- Gently curl your cat into a sleeping position during the first hours, while the body is still soft. They'll fit the basket or box more easily, and they'll look more peaceful when you say goodbye.
- In the morning, call your vet or a crematory covering Brussels. Let them know where your cat is now and whether you're able to drive them over.
- Ask for the price in writing, and make sure it covers pickup, the type of cremation (private or communal) and whatever the ashes come home in.
- Take a paw print, a lock of fur or their collar now, ahead of the pickup, if a keepsake would mean something.
- Write down the expected return date for the ashes, and the name of whoever will call when they're ready.
Keeping your cat close
Brussels is a dense city of tall terraced houses, many divided into flats, with narrow staircases and few private gardens. That makes home collection the norm when a pet dies, and it helps to tell a provider which floor you are on and whether there is a lift. Because the region is bilingual, you can ask for service in French or Dutch, and most providers will also handle an enquiry in English.

Why does the Brussels page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 67.98%[1] of Belgium residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Brussels?
Usually yes. Antwerp is about 26 miles away and Ghent is about 31 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Should I choose cremation or burial for my cat?
Surveys in the US and UK point the same way: roughly two-thirds of bereaved owners choose cremation and about 30% choose burial[8]. A cat's small size makes a garden burial easy where it's allowed, but cremation is simpler if you rent, might move or want your cat close. You can combine them by burying the ashes.
How much ash will I get back from my cat?
Much less than people expect. Cremated remains weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight[3], so a 12 lb cat would be expected to return about 6.7 oz[9], roughly a teacup's worth. An urn of about 12 cubic inches is usually enough[6]. Our urn size calculator works it out from your cat's weight.
Can I bury my cat in the garden in Brussels-Capital?
In many places you can, with conditions such as depth, distance from water and owning the property. Rules vary within Brussels-Capital, so check with your city or council before digging. Dig deep enough to keep foxes, coyotes and dogs away. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your cat with you and bury the ashes later if you wish.
Can I keep my cat's whiskers and fur before cremation?
Yes, and it's easiest before collection. Clip a small lock of fur from somewhere hidden, like the chest or behind a back leg, and keep it in an envelope or small bag. Shed whiskers turn up in beds and on windowsills for weeks, and a glass vial keeps them safe. Many providers can also take a fur clipping or paw print for you if you ask on the first call.
