Cat Cremation in Belgium

Belgium

Cat Cremation in Belgium: what to know

Cat cremation in Belgium follows the same basic choices as anywhere: private cremation with the ashes returned, or communal cremation without. What differs from country to country is how services are organised, what they cost and which rules apply to burial and scattering. This page covers Belgium as a whole; each city page adds local detail.

Price quotes for a cat in Belgium should be in local currency, include any tax and list each piece separately: collection, the cremation itself, the container and extras like a paw print. Quotes that look very different often cover different things. Ask for a written total from two providers and compare like for like before you choose.

We cover 3 communities in Belgium, from Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent.

Cremation traditions in Belgium

In Belgium, about 67.98%[1] of people are cremated, so both traditions are familiar. Among cat owners, the split often follows the house: families with land and outdoor cats tend to bury, while those in apartments with indoor cats lean towards cremation. If you're torn, think about the next ten years rather than the next ten days. Will you stay where you are?

Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) publishes the Belgium rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.

What cat cremation costs in Belgium

Some European pet insurers contribute to cremation costs: four Dutch insurers offer some reimbursement[2], for example. Check your policy before you pay in Belgium. Also ask how long the ashes take; in Sweden, AniCura says ashes normally come back in 2-4 weeks[3], which is longer than many owners expect.

Cats outnumber dogs in much of Europe: there are about 108.3 million[4] pet cats on the continent against 89.6 million[5] dogs. Prices follow the same logic everywhere: collective cremation costs less than individual, and a cat sits in the lowest weight band. The table shows published examples to give you a feel for Belgium.

Burial and scattering rules for Belgium

If your cat was put to sleep, the drug used stays in the body after death and can poison a dog, fox or bird of prey that digs up a grave. That's why many authorities discourage burying euthanized pets anywhere animals can reach them, and why cremation is simpler for most families. The notes below show what Belgium says about burial and scattering.

Belgium has about 3,079,000[10] pet cats, well ahead of its dogs. Pet crematoria serve all three regions, and your vet can usually arrange individual or collective cremation. Where you may scatter ashes or bury a cat depends on your commune, so ask them before choosing a spot.

The first 48 hours, step by step

  1. If your cat is elderly or newly diagnosed, begin while there's time. A kidney, thyroid or cancer diagnosis often gives weeks or months to plan quietly.
  2. Ask your vet what the end is likely to look like for your cat's condition, and which signs mean it's time to talk again.
  3. Choose the aftercare now: private or communal cremation, and who collects your cat. Compare prices with our cost calculator while you're calm.
  4. Write your wishes down and ask the vet to add them to your cat's record, so an emergency hospital or a locum in Belgium can follow them too.
  5. Pick the place for the goodbye: at home, in the clinic's quiet room or in the garden on a warm day. Save a mobile vet's number if you'd prefer home.
  6. Spend the good days well. Treats, a warm windowsill, a brush, a camera. The point of planning ahead is that the final stretch belongs to your cat rather than to the phone.

Remembering your cat in Belgium

Many people who have lost a cat find the quiet the hardest part: no voice at the kitchen door in the morning, no weight at the foot of the bed. Grief for a cat can be as heavy as any other loss. Pet-loss support lines, online groups and local counsellors in Belgium all exist for exactly this, and using them is a sign of how much your cat mattered.

Questions people ask

Can I bury my cat in the garden in Belgium?

Often yes, with conditions such as burial depth, distance from wells and waterways and whether you own the land. Cities, councils and landlords can be stricter than the wider rules. Dig deep enough to keep foxes and dogs away. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your cat with you and bury the ashes later.

How many communities do you cover in Belgium?

We currently have local cat cremation guides for 3 communities in Belgium, including Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent. Each page covers local weather and timing, prices, rules and how pickup usually works there.

Is cat cremation common in Belgium?

For people, about 67.98%[1] of deaths in Belgium end in cremation, and pet aftercare tends to follow local habits. Among families who want to keep their cat close, cremation is now the most common choice, especially in towns and cities where many cats live indoors.

Can a vet come to my home to put my cat to sleep anywhere in Belgium?

In and around larger cities, mobile vets who offer home euthanasia are common, and they're especially popular with cat owners because it avoids the carrier and the car. In rural parts of Belgium, coverage is patchier and travel fees are more likely. Your regular vet may visit even if they don't advertise it, so ask.

Do I need a permit to have my cat cremated in Belgium?

No. Families don't need a permit to have a cat cremated anywhere we cover. Any licensing applies to the crematory itself, and rules on burial and scattering are set separately. If you plan to bury your cat's body in the garden or scatter ashes on public land, check the local rules for that part first.

Can I arrange cremation for a community or feral cat in Belgium?

Yes. You don't have to be the registered owner to arrange cremation for a cat you cared for. Ask a vet to scan for a microchip first, in case someone is looking for them. Rescue groups and trap-neuter-return volunteers in Belgium often know a provider offering low-cost communal cremation, and private cremation is available if you'd like the ashes.
