Cat cremation in Antwerp, Flanders

Antwerp, Flanders

How cat cremation works in Antwerp

Antwerp's mild, often grey weather means a death at home seldom forces a hurried decision. Lay your pet somewhere cool, on a blanket, away from radiators and sunny windows, and on a warm day add wrapped cold packs. That leaves time for a partner or children to come home and say goodbye, and to ring your vet, who can explain local options and whether they offer cremation through the practice.

Antwerp is compact and busy, with narrow townhouses in Zurenborg and Borgerhout, converted warehouses on Het Eilandje and apartment blocks across Berchem and Linkeroever. Plenty of residents cycle or take the tram and do not own a car, so having a pet collected from home is often the practical route. Give the provider your floor, whether the building has a lift, and whether a van can stop outside on a busy street.

Many Antwerp cat owners rent, and that quietly decides a lot. Leases rarely allow burial in a shared yard, and a balcony planter isn't a grave. Cremation sidesteps all of it: your cat's ashes fit in a small urn that can move with you to the next apartment or the next city. Because a cat returns so little ash, some owners keep it in a keepsake box on a bookshelf, which suits small spaces well.

Antwerp is home to about 523,000 people, the largest of the 2 Flanders communities we cover.

Our pages for Brussels (26 miles, a larger centre) and Ghent (32 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Antwerp as well.

In 2023, 67.98% of deaths in Belgium were cremated (21 crematoria).

clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[2]

CareCredit's 2025 study put US cat euthanasia at $158 in clinic and $359 at home, cat cremation at $180 and cat cemetery burial at $566.

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Cremation in Belgium, and what it means for cat owners

Cremation is now the majority choice for people in Belgium, at about 67.98%[1], but burial still has deep roots here. You'll see both among cat owners. A cat's small size makes a garden burial easy where it's allowed, and a cat's small amount of ash makes cremation easy to live with. Neither is more proper than the other.

We take the Belgium rate from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Antwerp, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

Timing your cat's aftercare in Antwerp's climate

Weather matters most in the first day. If it's warm in Antwerp, keep your cat in the coolest room with wrapped ice packs alongside them and ask for collection within the day. If it's cold, an unheated room can safely hold your cat until morning. Either way, close the door so other pets can't disturb them, and don't feel you have to rush the goodbye.

What cat cremation costs in Antwerp

Across Europe, about 9.2 million[4] pet cats die each year, by our estimate, so every pet crematorium near Antwerp handles cats routinely. Ask whether the cremation is individual, whether you can be present and whether the ashes come back to your vet or to your home. For a cat, a small urn or keepsake box is usually enough.

We keep the detailed Flanders price table on one page so it stays current: see Flanders prices.

Local rules in Flanders

If your cat was put to sleep, the drug used stays in the body after death and can poison a dog, fox or bird of prey that digs up a grave. That's why many authorities discourage burying euthanized pets anywhere animals can reach them, and why cremation is simpler for most families. The notes below show what Flanders says about burial and scattering.

Belgium has about 3,079,000[6] pet cats, well ahead of its dogs. Pet crematoria serve all three regions, and your vet can usually arrange individual or collective cremation. Where you may scatter ashes or bury a cat depends on your commune, so ask them before choosing a spot.

The first 48 hours, step by step

  1. If your cat died at the clinic or an emergency hospital, during surgery, in an oxygen cage or overnight on a drip, nothing needs deciding before you leave. Ask the team to keep your cat in their cold room while you think.
  2. Ask to see your cat if you weren't there. Most hospitals will bring your cat to a quiet room wrapped in a blanket, and many owners say it helped more than they expected.
  3. Request a copy of the notes when a death came out of nowhere. A post-mortem is an option too, but only before the cremation, so raise it straight away if you want one.
  4. Tell the hospital which crematory you want. The provider an emergency hospital normally uses isn't necessarily your regular vet's, and you can pick either, or one you found on your own.
  5. Check that the hospital records private or communal correctly on the release form, and ask for a copy with your cat's name on it.
  6. Collect your cat's collar, carrier and blanket, or have the staff keep the blanket with your cat for the journey.

Remembering your cat in Antwerp

Most aftercare in Antwerp is arranged in Dutch, though many providers are comfortable in English and French, and the city's large international community means that is often needed. Ask for the quote in your preferred language so nothing gets lost. Check whether the cremation is individual, so only your pet's ashes come back, or communal, and whether collection and an urn are included.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in Belgium?

For people, yes: about 67.98%[1] of Belgium deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Antwerp follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Antwerp?

Usually yes. Brussels is about 26 miles away and Ghent is about 32 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

What if my cat died outdoors or was hit by a car near Antwerp?

Bring gloves, a towel and a box, lift your cat gently and take them home or straight to your vet. A vet can scan for a microchip if you're not sure it's your cat, and can arrange cremation from there. A private cremation is still entirely possible, and so is a proper goodbye; the circumstances don't change that. Take someone with you if you can.

How do I know I'm getting my own cat's ashes back?

Ask the provider how they track each animal. Careful crematories use a numbered tag, often metal, that stays with your cat from collection through cremation and returns with the ashes, along with a certificate. Ask whether private means your cat is alone in the chamber, since some providers use partitioned cremation. Get the answer in writing.

How much ash will I get back from my cat?

Much less than people expect. Cremated remains weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight[3], so a 12 lb cat would be expected to return about 6.7 oz[7], roughly a teacup's worth. An urn of about 12 cubic inches is usually enough[8]. Our urn size calculator works it out from your cat's weight.

Can someone collect my cat from home in Antwerp?

Yes. Most pet crematories and many vets in and around Antwerp offer home collection, sometimes out of hours for an extra fee. Because a cat is small, many families also bring their cat to the vet or crematory themselves in a carrier or lined box, which usually saves the collection charge. Either way, ask for the price in writing first.
