Cat Cremation in Flanders: what to know
In Flanders, as in most places, the vet is where the process usually starts. That's no bad thing: vets see loss often and work with local crematories. But you're not obliged to use the provider your vet suggests. Calling a crematory directly, or bringing your cat in yourself, is normal and can save money for exactly the same service.
Most Flanders families never compare cat cremation providers; they use whoever their vet suggests, and that works for many. But prices can vary widely within Flanders for exactly the same private cremation, and because cats sit in the lowest price band, a collection fee can be a big share of the bill. A quick second quote is worth it if you have the time.

Cremation in Flanders, and what it means for cat owners
Human cremation sits at around 67.98%[1] in Flanders, and pet owners are split in a similar way. In one US survey of more than 2,000 dog and cat owners, 68% had chosen cremation for at least one past pet and 32% burial[2] (Cooney et al.). Many households had done both at different times. Your choice for this cat doesn't have to match the last one.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) publishes the Flanders rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
Cat cremation prices for Flanders families
In Flanders, as in most of Europe, your vet is usually the first point of contact and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium, with the fee added to your vet bill. You can also contact a crematorium directly. Ask for the price of individual (private) and collective (communal) cremation for a cat, and whether collection is included.
Cats outnumber dogs in much of Europe: there are about 108.3 million[3] pet cats on the continent against 89.6 million[4] dogs. Prices follow the same logic everywhere: collective cremation costs less than individual, and a cat sits in the lowest weight band. The table shows published examples to give you a feel for Belgium.
| Country | Collective (communal) | Individual (private) |
|---|---|---|
| Germany (all pets) | €85 to €205[5] | €165 to €375[5] |
| Ireland (cats up to 10 kg) | n/a | €250[6] |
| Ireland (pets under 2 kg) | n/a | from €150[6] |
| Norway (1 to 20 kg) | from NOK 1,190[7] | NOK 3,790[7] |

What Flanders allows: burial, scattering and more
You don't need a permit to have your cat cremated, but what you do afterwards, burying them in the garden or scattering their ashes in a park, can be governed by local rules. Here's what applies in Flanders.
Belgium has about 3,079,000[9] pet cats, well ahead of its dogs. Pet crematoria serve all three regions, and your vet can usually arrange individual or collective cremation. Where you may scatter ashes or bury a cat depends on your commune, so ask them before choosing a spot.
What to do when your cat dies in Flanders
- If your cat died while you were away, in the care of a sitter, a neighbor or a boarding cattery, your first call is to whoever was looking after them. Find out what took place and where your cat is at this moment.
- Ask them to keep your cat cool: a towel over the body, a box with a lid, the chilliest room available, or a trip to the closest vet if the house is going to heat up.
- Give your vet permission by phone or email to hold your cat until you're home. Most clinics near Flanders will accept a cat from a sitter if you call ahead.
- Decide whether you want to see your cat before cremation. If you do, the clinic can hold them for a few days; if the trip home is long, a photo from the vet can be a gentle substitute.
- Arrange the cremation remotely if you need to. Providers take instructions and payment by phone, and the ashes can wait at the clinic for you.
- Be kind to the person who was looking after your cat. An elderly cat can go downhill in hours, and a sitter who rang for help acted exactly as they should have.
Remembering your cat in Flanders
If you cared for community cats, remembering one can mean looking after the others: keeping the feeding station going, helping a local trap-neuter-return group or sponsoring a cat at a Flanders rescue. Some colony caregivers keep a small memorial stone near the spot where the cat used to wait for dinner.

Questions people ask
Can I arrange cremation for a community or feral cat in Flanders?
Yes. You don't have to be the registered owner to arrange cremation for a cat you cared for. Ask a vet to scan for a microchip first, in case someone is looking for them. Rescue groups and trap-neuter-return volunteers in Flanders often know a provider offering low-cost communal cremation, and private cremation is available if you'd like the ashes.
Can a vet come to my home to put my cat to sleep anywhere in Flanders?
In and around larger cities, mobile vets who offer home euthanasia are common, and they're especially popular with cat owners because it avoids the carrier and the car. In rural parts of Flanders, coverage is patchier and travel fees are more likely. Your regular vet may visit even if they don't advertise it, so ask.
How much does cat cremation cost in Flanders?
Prices across Flanders depend mostly on whether you choose private or communal cremation, plus any home pickup or urn upgrade; a cat's weight barely changes the price. Big-city providers may charge more for same-day collection, while rural areas may add mileage. Ask for an itemized written total before you agree.
Is cat cremation cheaper in small towns in Flanders?
Sometimes, but not always. Small-town vets often have lower fees and a set collection day with a regional crematory, which keeps costs down. On the other hand, mileage charges for a home collection can cost more than the cremation of a cat. Bringing your cat in yourself is the easiest saving anywhere.
Can I bury my cat in the garden in Flanders?
Often yes, with conditions such as burial depth, distance from wells and waterways and whether you own the land. Cities, councils and landlords can be stricter than the wider rules. Dig deep enough to keep foxes and dogs away. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your cat with you and bury the ashes later.
Is cat cremation common in Flanders?
For people, about 67.98%[1] of deaths in Flanders end in cremation, and pet aftercare tends to follow local habits. Among families who want to keep their cat close, cremation is now the most common choice, especially in towns and cities where many cats live indoors.
