Cat Cremation in the Netherlands

Cat Cremation in the Netherlands: what to know

Families in the Netherlands often find the hardest part isn't the decision itself but not knowing who to call, especially when a cat dies suddenly or out of sight. Your vet is the usual first contact and can arrange everything. If you'd rather choose the crematorium yourself, you can, and we can email you options for your area.

Cat cremation in the Netherlands follows the same basic choices as anywhere: private cremation with the ashes returned, or communal cremation without. What differs from country to country is how services are organised, what they cost and which rules apply to burial and scattering. This page covers the Netherlands as a whole; each city page adds local detail.

We cover 7 communities in the Netherlands, from Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague to smaller towns.

Cremation traditions in the Netherlands

In the Netherlands, about 68.37%[1] of people are cremated, so both traditions are familiar. Among cat owners, the split often follows the house: families with land and outdoor cats tend to bury, while those in apartments with indoor cats lean towards cremation. If you're torn, think about the next ten years rather than the next ten days. Will you stay where you are?

We take the the Netherlands percentage from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.

How much to budget for your cat

Across Europe, about 9.2 million[2] pet cats die each year, by our estimate, so every pet crematorium near the Netherlands handles cats routinely. Ask whether the cremation is individual, whether you can be present and whether the ashes come back to your vet or to your home. For a cat, a small urn or keepsake box is usually enough.

Some European pet insurers contribute to cremation costs: four Dutch insurers offer some reimbursement[3], for example. Check your policy before you pay in the Netherlands. Also ask how long the ashes take; in Sweden, AniCura says ashes normally come back in 2-4 weeks[4], which is longer than many owners expect.

What the Netherlands allows: burial, scattering and more

If you leave your cat at the clinic without choosing, most practices will arrange communal cremation by default, and you won't get ashes back. That's legal and dignified, but it can't be undone. Before you sign a release form, check that the box you've ticked matches what you want. The notes below then cover what the Netherlands allows for burial and scattering.

The Netherlands has about 3,000,000[9] pet cats, well ahead of its dogs. Several Dutch pet insurers reimburse part of the cremation cost[3], so check your policy. Individual (individuele) cremation returns your cat's ashes; collective doesn't. Many crematoria let you attend, and some have a farewell room.

What to do when your cat dies in the Netherlands

  1. If your cat dies at night, you don't need to call anyone until morning. Move your cat to a cool room and cover them with a towel.
  2. Put a towel or pad underneath. After death the bladder and bowels often empty, which is ordinary.
  3. Gently curl your cat into a sleeping position during the first hours, while the body is still soft. They'll fit the basket or box more easily, and they'll look more peaceful when you say goodbye.
  4. In the morning, call your vet or a crematory covering the Netherlands. Let them know where your cat is now and whether you're able to drive them over.
  5. Ask for the price in writing, including collection, private or communal cremation and the container for the ashes.
  6. Take a paw print, a lock of fur or their collar now, ahead of the pickup, if a keepsake would mean something.
  7. Write down the expected return date for the ashes and who will contact you when they're ready.

Keeping your cat's memory close in the Netherlands

Many the Netherlands families keep their cat's ashes indoors, near a window or the chair their cat claimed, rather than scattering them outdoors, especially for an indoor cat whose whole world was the home. A cat's ashes fit in a small urn or a keepsake box, and some people move a pinch into a locket so they can carry it.

If the Netherlands is not quite where you are, all locations has the rest. Otherwise the services page, the tools and the poll results are the useful next stops.

Questions people ask

Do cats outnumber dogs in the Netherlands?

In much of Europe, yes: the continent has about 108.3 million[10] pet cats against 89.6 million[11] dogs. The balance differs by country, and in a few places dogs still lead. Either way, every pet crematorium in the Netherlands handles cats routinely, and individual cremation for a cat sits in the lowest price band.

Can a vet come to my home to put my cat to sleep anywhere in the Netherlands?

In and around larger cities, mobile vets who offer home euthanasia are common, and they're especially popular with cat owners because it avoids the carrier and the car. In rural parts of the Netherlands, coverage is patchier and travel fees are more likely. Your regular vet may visit even if they don't advertise it, so ask.

Do I need a permit to have my cat cremated in the Netherlands?

No. Families don't need a permit to have a cat cremated anywhere we cover. Any licensing applies to the crematory itself, and rules on burial and scattering are set separately. If you plan to bury your cat's body in the garden or scatter ashes on public land, check the local rules for that part first.

How long does it take to get my cat's ashes back in the Netherlands?

Many families receive their cat's ashes within one to two weeks. In large cities it can be faster; in rural areas where pets travel to a regional crematory it may take a little longer. Small pets' ashes are sometimes returned via your vet or by courier. Ask for an expected date when you book.

Can I arrange cremation for a community or feral cat in the Netherlands?

Yes. You don't have to be the registered owner to arrange cremation for a cat you cared for. Ask a vet to scan for a microchip first, in case someone is looking for them. Rescue groups and trap-neuter-return volunteers in the Netherlands often know a provider offering low-cost communal cremation, and private cremation is available if you'd like the ashes.

Is cat cremation cheaper in small towns in the Netherlands?

Sometimes, but not always. Small-town vets often have lower fees and a set collection day with a regional crematory, which keeps costs down. On the other hand, mileage charges for a home collection can cost more than the cremation of a cat. Bringing your cat in yourself is the easiest saving anywhere.
