Cat cremation in Rotterdam: how it usually works
Rotterdam is a city of apartments, from postwar blocks in Zuid and Kralingen to towers along the Maas at Kop van Zuid, and many residents cycle rather than drive. Steep, narrow Dutch staircases and scarce parking can make carrying a pet's body out of the building a real challenge. When you arrange pickup, mention the stairs, whether there is a lift and where a car can legally stop for a few minutes.
Roughly two in three Dutch funerals are cremations, and pet cremation is well established. With most Rotterdam households living without a garden of their own, cremation is simply the practical route. Useful questions for a provider: is it an individual cremation, may you attend, is pickup included, and when will the ashes be back? Some Dutch providers offer a farewell room where the family can sit with the pet first.
Cats hide when they're unwell, and in a city apartment that can mean finding your cat under a bed, inside a closet or behind the washing machine. If that's how it happened, please don't blame yourself; it's one of the most cat-like things a cat can do. Gently lift them onto a towel, tuck their legs in as if they were sleeping and place them in a box or basket in the coolest room. The local attitude to cremation
Human cremation sits at around 68.37%[1] in Netherlands, and pet owners are split in a similar way. In one US survey of more than 2,000 dog and cat owners, 68% had chosen cremation for at least one past pet and 32% burial[4] (Cooney et al.). Many households had done both at different times. Your choice for this cat doesn't have to match the last one.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) is where the Netherlands figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Rotterdam tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Rotterdam weather and timing
Wherever you are, the rule is the same: keep your cat cool, indoors and out of direct sun until they're collected, ideally in a lined box or basket in the coolest room. In warm weather, aim for collection within the day. In cold weather you have a little more time, but frozen ground can make a garden burial impossible until it thaws.

Rules worth knowing in South Holland
You don't need a permit to have your cat cremated, but what you do afterwards, burying them in the garden or scattering their ashes in a park, can be governed by local rules. Here's what applies in South Holland.
The Netherlands has about 3,000,000[8] pet cats, well ahead of its dogs. Several Dutch pet insurers reimburse part of the cremation cost[5], so check your policy. Individual (individuele) cremation returns your cat's ashes; collective doesn't. Many crematoria let you attend, and some have a farewell room.
What to do next, one step at a time
- If your cat died at the clinic or an emergency hospital, whether on the operating table, in oxygen or on fluids through the night, you can walk out without having decided anything. The team can hold your cat in their cold storage until you've had time to think.
- Ask to see your cat if you missed the moment. Hospitals will usually wrap your cat in a blanket and bring them into a private room, and people often find it helps far more than they thought it would.
- Request a copy of the notes if the death was unexpected. You can ask for a post-mortem, but it has to happen before cremation, so say so now.
- Tell the hospital which crematory you want. The provider an emergency hospital normally uses isn't necessarily your regular vet's, and you can pick either, or one you found on your own.
- Check that the hospital records private or communal correctly on the release form, and ask for a copy with your cat's name on it.
- Collect your cat's collar, carrier and blanket, or have the staff keep the blanket with your cat for the journey.
Keeping your cat close
Rotterdam's maritime climate is mild, wet and windy, with few hard freezes and summers that are warm rather than hot. A pet's body kept in a cool room stays stable overnight while you decide. During a summer heat wave, when top-floor flats warm up quickly, keep the body cool with ice packs and arrange collection sooner. Cold winter weeks give you the most time to decide.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Rotterdam?
Usually yes. The Hague is about 13 miles away, Utrecht is about 30 miles away and Haarlem is about 32 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Hiding is instinct. A cat who feels ill or weak looks for somewhere small, quiet and protected, like under a bed, in a closet or beneath a deck. It doesn't mean your cat was frightened of you or that you missed something obvious; cats are very good at concealing illness until late. Many owners find their cat this way, and it's okay to need help with what comes next.
Can someone collect my cat from home in Rotterdam?
Yes. Most pet crematories and many vets in and around Rotterdam offer home collection, sometimes out of hours for an extra fee. Because a cat is small, many families also bring their cat to the vet or crematory themselves in a carrier or lined box, which usually saves the collection charge. Either way, ask for the price in writing first.

Many families get their cat's ashes back within about one to two weeks, and 5 to 10 days is commonly quoted in the US[9]. In a large city it can be quicker; where the cremation happens in a larger centre like Amsterdam, it may take a little longer. Ask for an expected return date when you book.
Should I choose cremation or burial for my cat?
Surveys in the US and UK point the same way: roughly two-thirds of bereaved owners choose cremation and about 30% choose burial[10]. A cat's small size makes a garden burial easy where it's allowed, but cremation is simpler if you rent, might move or want your cat close. You can combine them by burying the ashes.
