Who handles cat aftercare in Amsterdam
Amsterdam's narrow canal houses and apartment blocks come with the famously steep Dutch staircases, and many homes have no garden at all; some people live on houseboats. That makes burying a pet at home rarely possible and carrying a body down to the street hard, so home collection is what most owners ask for. When you book, mention the floor, whether there is a lift or a hoist beam, and whether a vehicle can stop on your canal street.
Amsterdam families spend time in the Vondelpark, the Amsterdamse Bos and along the IJ, but most pets in the city live in apartments and on houseboats, and many owners want the ashes back to keep at home. Individual cremation, where your pet is cremated alone and the ashes returned, is widely offered in the Netherlands. Ask for that in writing, since a collective cremation returns no ashes.
Not everyone in Amsterdam has a car, and that's fine. A cat fits in a carrier or a lined box, so you can take them to your vet or an emergency clinic by taxi or rideshare, or ask a crematory to collect from your door. If you'd rather not travel with your cat's body at all, collection from an apartment is routine for most city providers. Tell them the floor, whether there's an elevator and who will buzz them in.

Why cremation is familiar in Netherlands, or isn't
Human cremation sits at around 68.37%[1] in Netherlands, and pet owners are split in a similar way. In one US survey of more than 2,000 dog and cat owners, 68% had chosen cremation for at least one past pet and 32% burial[4] (Cooney et al.). Many households had done both at different times. Your choice for this cat doesn't have to match the last one.
The Netherlands figure comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
How Amsterdam's weather affects the first few hours
Whatever the season, ask any provider near Amsterdam where your cat will wait between collection and cremation. A good crematory keeps animals in refrigerated storage and can tell you roughly how long your cat will be there. In warm weather that answer matters more; in cold weather it mostly affects when the ashes come home.

Burial and scattering rules for North Holland
Before you bury, scatter or plan a memorial, it's worth checking what North Holland allows. Keeping ashes at home is allowed everywhere we know of. Burying a whole cat and scattering in public places are where rules come in, usually to protect water supplies and shared spaces, and renters normally need the landlord's permission for any garden burial.
The Netherlands has about 3,000,000[8] pet cats, well ahead of its dogs. Several Dutch pet insurers reimburse part of the cremation cost[5], so check your policy. Individual (individuele) cremation returns your cat's ashes; collective doesn't. Many crematoria let you attend, and some have a farewell room.
The first 48 hours, step by step
- Book the appointment for a slot that suits everyone who'd like to be present, and find out if a home visit is possible, since your cat is most at ease there.
- Decide on aftercare beforehand, rather than being handed the question at the hardest moment. The usual choices are a burial in the garden, communal cremation or private cremation.
- Ask the vet to arrange collection, or give them the name of the crematory you picked on your own.
- Prepare a quiet space that's warm and feels like home, with the bed or blanket your cat likes best and some of their favorite treats within reach.
- Settle paperwork and payment first where possible, so you aren't handed forms once it's over.
- Stay as long as you need once your cat has gone. Nobody will hurry you.
- Check the written confirmation of the cremation type and return date before the vet leaves.
Ways to remember your cat locally
Amsterdam's maritime climate is mild and damp, with cool summers, grey winters and frequent wind and rain. That gives you a little time if your pet dies at home, but keep the body in a cool room on a blanket and away from radiators. During summer heat waves, which the Netherlands now sees more often, arrange cremation within a day and ask about cool storage if a weekend gets in the way.

How do Netherlands attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Netherlands human cremation rate at about 68.37%[1]. We show it on the Amsterdam page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Amsterdam?
The closest communities we cover are Haarlem (about 11 miles), Utrecht (about 21 miles) and The Hague (about 33 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Amsterdam too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Can I bury my cat in the garden in North Holland?
In many places you can, with conditions such as depth, distance from water and owning the property. Rules vary within North Holland, so check with your city or council before digging. Dig deep enough to keep foxes, coyotes and dogs away. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your cat with you and bury the ashes later if you wish.
Should I choose cremation or burial for my cat?
Surveys in the US and UK point the same way: roughly two-thirds of bereaved owners choose cremation and about 30% choose burial[7]. A cat's small size makes a garden burial easy where it's allowed, but cremation is simpler if you rent, might move or want your cat close. You can combine them by burying the ashes.
What happens if my cat dies at night or on a weekend in Amsterdam?
Keep your cat somewhere cool, in a lined box with the door closed, and call your nearest emergency vet if you want advice; in a city like Amsterdam there's usually one open around the clock. They can hold your cat until your regular vet or crematory opens. You don't need to decide on cremation that night.
Can someone collect my cat from home in Amsterdam?
Yes. Most pet crematories and many vets in and around Amsterdam offer home collection, sometimes out of hours for an extra fee. Because a cat is small, many families also bring their cat to the vet or crematory themselves in a carrier or lined box, which usually saves the collection charge. Either way, ask for the price in writing first.
