The local attitude to cremation
Where fewer families choose cremation for themselves, as in Italy (around 38.16%[1]), the business that collects animals from a clinic isn't always a dedicated pet crematory. Some also handle farm animals or general animal disposal. For a cat you want returned, ask where exactly your cat will go and whether the site does individual pet cremation. A good provider will tell you without hesitation.

If you leave your cat at the clinic without choosing, most practices will arrange communal cremation by default, and you won't get ashes back. That's legal and dignified, but it can't be undone. Before you sign a release form, check that the box you've ticked matches what you want. The notes below then cover what Liguria allows for burial and scattering.
Italy has about 10.2 million pet cats[7], more than its dogs. Pet cremation is widely available through private crematoria, and your vet can usually arrange collection. Ask whether the cremation is individuale (ashes returned) or collettiva. Rules on burying pets on private land are set regionally and locally, so check with your comune first.
What to do when your cat dies in Portofino
- If it's a child's cat, tell them simply and truthfully that the cat has died and won't come back. Avoid "put to sleep" with young children; it can make bedtime frightening.

Why does the Portofino page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 38.16%[1] of Italy residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Portofino?
Usually yes. Genoa is about 15 miles away, Milan is about 80 miles away and Turin is about 92 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I have to travel to Genoa to arrange things?
