In hot weather, cool your pet's body within a few hours: wrap them in a towel, place ice packs around the body, close the shutters and choose the coolest room you have. Winters are cool and damp, which buys a little more time, but arranging aftercare within a day or two keeps options open.
A city like Paris brings many cultures together, and pet aftercare reflects that. Some providers here can arrange a short prayer, incense, a candle or a family viewing before cremation, and some staff speak languages other than English. If a particular ritual matters to your family, mention it on the first call. Most small requests for a cat, like flowers or a note in the basket, cost nothing extra.

About 44.91%[1] of people in France are cremated, lower than in many places. Older relatives may expect a garden burial and younger ones may assume cremation. Talk it through if you like, but it's your household's decision. Some families do both: cremation first, then a small burial of the ashes under a plant or stone, so there's still somewhere to visit.

What Ile-de-France allows: burial, scattering and more
Most of the decisions after a cat dies are yours alone. The exceptions are burial and scattering, which Ile-de-France and your local council or city may regulate, and, in some places, updating your cat's microchip record so the database knows they've died.
France has about 14.9 million pet cats[5], almost twice its dog population. Your vet will usually offer incinération collective or individuelle; only individual cremation returns your cat's ashes. Cats in France must be identified, so after your cat dies, let the national identification register know, or ask your vet to do it.
The first 48 hours, step by step
- If it's a child's cat, use plain, honest words: the cat has died and isn't coming home. Steer clear of "put to sleep" around little ones, who may then be scared to go to bed.
- Let the child say goodbye if they want to: stroke the cat's fur, tuck in a drawing or choose the blanket your cat will travel in.
- Offer a small job: choosing a photograph, printing the name that will go on the urn, looking after the collar. Having a task makes the loss easier for a child to carry.
- Phone the clinic or a Paris pet crematory once the goodbye is done, and choose private cremation if the child will want the ashes back.
- Warn school or daycare about what's happened at home, so the staff understand if your child seems withdrawn or tearful.

Why do quotes for the same cat cremation in Paris vary so much?
In a large city, providers differ in overheads, whether they collect themselves or use a courier, which container is included and whether a vet adds a fee for arranging it. Two private cat cremations can be identical in practice but priced very differently. Ask each provider for an itemized quote, then compare the cremation line on its own.
