Cat Cremation in France: what to know
Families in France often find the hardest part isn't the decision itself but not knowing who to call, especially when a cat dies suddenly or out of sight. Your vet is the usual first contact and can arrange everything. If you'd rather choose the crematorium yourself, you can, and we can email you options for your area.
If you're living in France but may move abroad one day, cremation keeps your options open. A sealed container of a cat's ashes is small enough to travel in hand luggage with the crematorium's certificate, while a garden grave stays behind. Many expat families in France choose it for that reason, then decide on a final resting place years later.

Local habits around cremation and burial
With about 44.91%[1] of people cremated, France is a place where burial is still common. That can mean fewer pet crematories nearby and a longer trip for your cat. It doesn't mean worse care. Ask your vet which crematory they use, how far away it is and whether private cremation for a cat is available, so you know what to expect.
ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023) publishes the France rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
Cat cremation costs around France
Cats outnumber dogs in much of Europe: there are about 108.3 million[2] pet cats on the continent against 89.6 million[3] dogs. Prices follow the same logic everywhere: collective cremation costs less than individual, and a cat sits in the lowest weight band. The table shows published examples to give you a feel for France.
Some European pet insurers contribute to cremation costs: four Dutch insurers offer some reimbursement[4], for example. Check your policy before you pay in France. Also ask how long the ashes take; in Sweden, AniCura says ashes normally come back in 2-4 weeks[5], which is longer than many owners expect.

What France allows: burial, scattering and more
If your cat was put to sleep, the drug used stays in the body after death and can poison a dog, fox or bird of prey that digs up a grave. That's why many authorities discourage burying euthanized pets anywhere animals can reach them, and why cremation is simpler for most families. The notes below show what France says about burial and scattering.
France has about 14.9 million pet cats[10], almost twice its dog population. Your vet will usually offer incinération collective or individuelle; only individual cremation returns your cat's ashes. Cats in France must be identified, so after your cat dies, let the national identification register know, or ask your vet to do it.
What to do when your cat dies in France
- If your cat is elderly or newly diagnosed, begin while there's time. Cancer, thyroid disease or failing kidneys usually leave you weeks, sometimes months, to make plans without pressure.
- Ask your vet what the end is likely to look like for your cat's condition, and which signs mean it's time to talk again.
- Choose the aftercare now: whether the cremation will be private or communal, and who will pick your cat up. While your head is clear, run the numbers through our cost calculator.
- Write your wishes down and have the clinic attach them to your cat's file, so that a locum or an out-of-hours hospital in France knows what you've decided.
- Pick the place for the goodbye: your own home, a quiet room at the clinic, or outside in the garden if the weather is kind. If home is your preference, keep a mobile vet's number handy.
- Spend the good days well. Treats, a warm windowsill, a brush, a camera. The point of planning ahead is that the final stretch belongs to your cat rather than to the phone.
Keeping your cat's memory close in France
Many people who have lost a cat find the quiet the hardest part: no voice at the kitchen door in the morning, no weight at the foot of the bed. Grief for a cat can be as heavy as any other loss. Can a vet come to my home to put my cat to sleep anywhere in France?
In and around larger cities, mobile vets who offer home euthanasia are common, and they're especially popular with cat owners because it avoids the carrier and the car. In rural parts of France, coverage is patchier and travel fees are more likely. Your regular vet may visit even if they don't advertise it, so ask.
How long does it take to get my cat's ashes back in France?
Many families receive their cat's ashes within one to two weeks. In large cities it can be faster; in rural areas where pets travel to a regional crematory it may take a little longer. Small pets' ashes are sometimes returned via your vet or by courier. Ask for an expected date when you book.
Can I arrange cremation for a community or feral cat in France?
Yes. You don't have to be the registered owner to arrange cremation for a cat you cared for. Ask a vet to scan for a microchip first, in case someone is looking for them. Rescue groups and trap-neuter-return volunteers in France often know a provider offering low-cost communal cremation, and private cremation is available if you'd like the ashes.
How many communities do you cover in France?

Is cat cremation cheaper in small towns in France?
Sometimes, but not always. Small-town vets often have lower fees and a set collection day with a regional crematory, which keeps costs down. On the other hand, mileage charges for a home collection can cost more than the cremation of a cat. Bringing your cat in yourself is the easiest saving anywhere.
Can I bury my cat in the garden in France?
Often yes, with conditions such as burial depth, distance from wells and waterways and whether you own the land. Cities, councils and landlords can be stricter than the wider rules. Dig deep enough to keep foxes and dogs away. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your cat with you and bury the ashes later.
