Who handles cat aftercare in Lyon
Lyon summers can be hot, with heatwaves settling in the Rhône valley, while winters are cool and grey. If your pet dies at home in summer, cool the body quickly by keeping them in the coolest room with the shutters closed and cold packs near the belly. In cooler months, a blanket and an unheated room are usually enough to give you time.
In France, owners can in some cases bury a small pet on their own land, but conditions apply, including distance from homes and water sources, so check with your mairie first. In a Lyon apartment that rarely applies, and most people choose cremation, often arranged through their vet. Ask whether the cremation is individual, with only your pet's ashes returned, or collective with no ashes back, and what the price includes.
Many Lyon households have two or three cats sharing a small space, and the cats left behind often notice the gap straight away. Some search the apartment and call; others sleep in the missing cat's spot. Many owners let the other cats sniff and sit with the body for a few minutes before collection. It does no harm, and in a small home it can settle things. Keep feeding times and litter routines steady for a few weeks afterwards.
Lyon's population is around 513,000, the largest of the 2 Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes communities we cover.
Lyon sits within easy reach of Grenoble (59 miles) and Dijon (108 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Lyon; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

How France thinks about cremation
Burial runs deep in France, with only about 44.91%[1] of people cremated. For a cat, a grave in the garden is still a very common choice, and a loving one where it's allowed. If you're leaning towards cremation instead, you won't be alone: it keeps options open, including burying the ashes later in a place you'll always be able to reach.

Timing your cat's aftercare in Lyon's climate
Whatever the season, ask any provider near Lyon where your cat will wait between collection and cremation. A good crematory keeps animals in refrigerated storage and can tell you roughly how long your cat will be there. In warm weather that answer matters more; in cold weather it mostly affects when the ashes come home.

What cat cremation costs in Lyon
Published prices give a sense of the range. In Germany, collective pet cremation is listed at about €85 to €205 and individual at €165 to €375[4], with cats at the low end. An Irish crematorium lists individual cremation at €250 for cats up to 10 kg[5]. Prices in Lyon depend on local providers, so ask for a written quote.

Local rules in Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes
Before you bury, scatter or plan a memorial, it's worth checking what Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes allows. Keeping ashes at home is allowed everywhere we know of. Burying a whole cat and scattering in public places are where rules come in, usually to protect water supplies and shared spaces, and renters normally need the landlord's permission for any garden burial.
France has about 14.9 million pet cats[7], almost twice its dog population. Your vet will usually offer incinération collective or individuelle; only individual cremation returns your cat's ashes. Cats in France must be identified, so after your cat dies, let the national identification register know, or ask your vet to do it.
The first 48 hours, step by step
- If your cat died while you were away, in the care of a sitter, a neighbor or a boarding cattery, your first call is to whoever was looking after them. Find out what took place and where your cat is at this moment.
- Ask them to keep your cat cool: a towel over the body, a box with a lid, the chilliest room available, or a trip to the closest vet if the house is going to heat up.
- Give your vet permission by phone or email to hold your cat until you're home. Most clinics near Lyon will accept a cat from a sitter if you call ahead.
- Decide whether you want to see your cat before cremation. If you do, the clinic can hold them for a few days; if the trip home is long, a photo from the vet can be a gentle substitute.
- Arrange the cremation remotely when coming home isn't possible yet. You can give instructions and pay over the phone, and the clinic will keep the ashes until you return.
- Be kind to the person who was looking after your cat. An elderly cat can go downhill in hours, and a sitter who rang for help acted exactly as they should have.
Keeping your cat's memory close in Lyon
Lyon's pets mostly live in apartments, from the old silk-workers' buildings on the Croix-Rousse slopes to Haussmann-style blocks on the Presqu'île and newer flats in Villeurbanne and Confluence. Stairs can be steep and lifts small, and parking is tight, so tell the provider about access when you ask for options. Many Lyonnais do not use a car daily, which makes collection from home the practical choice.

Questions people ask
How do France attitudes to cremation compare?
ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023) puts the France human cremation rate at about 44.91%[1]. We show it on the Lyon page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Lyon?
Usually yes. Grenoble is about 59 miles away and Dijon is about 108 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How much ash will I get back from my cat?
Much less than people expect. Cremated remains weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight[3], so a 12 lb cat would be expected to return about 6.7 oz[8], roughly a teacup's worth. An urn of about 12 cubic inches is usually enough[9]. Our urn size calculator works it out from your cat's weight.
How long until I get my cat's ashes back in Lyon?
Many families get their cat's ashes back within about one to two weeks, and 5 to 10 days is commonly quoted in the US[10]. In a large city it can be quicker; where the cremation happens in a larger centre like Lyon, it may take a little longer. Ask for an expected return date when you book.
What's the difference between private and communal cremation for a cat?
In a private cremation your cat is cremated alone and every bit of ash returned is theirs. In a communal cremation several animals are cremated together and no ashes come back; they're usually scattered in a memorial garden. Some providers also offer partitioned cremation, where pets share the chamber with dividers. Private typically costs about 2.0x[11] the communal price.
Should my other cats see the cat who died?
Many owners let their other cats sniff and sit with the body for a few minutes before collection, and it does no harm. Some cats show interest, others walk away; both are normal. Afterwards, keep feeding and litter routines steady. If a remaining cat stops eating for more than a day or two, call your vet, as cats don't cope well with going without food.
