Why cremation is familiar in France, or isn't
With about 44.91%[1] of people cremated, France is a place where burial is still common. That can mean fewer pet crematories nearby and a longer trip for your cat. It doesn't mean worse care. Ask your vet which crematory they use, how far away it is and whether private cremation for a cat is available, so you know what to expect.
ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023) is where the France figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Reims tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
How Reims's weather affects the first few hours
Wherever you are, the rule is the same: keep your cat cool, indoors and out of direct sun until they're collected, ideally in a lined box or basket in the coolest room. Burial and scattering rules for Grand Est
One rule matters more than any other if your cat bit or scratched someone in the last couple of weeks, or died after sudden changes in behavior: tell your vet before anything else. Where rabies occurs, public health rules may require testing, and that has to happen before cremation. In almost every other case, the rules below only come into play once you choose what to do with the ashes or the body.
France has about 14.9 million pet cats[7], almost twice its dog population. Your vet will usually offer incinération collective or individuelle; only individual cremation returns your cat's ashes. Cats in France must be identified, so after your cat dies, let the national identification register know, or ask your vet to do it.
What to do next, one step at a time
- If it's a child's cat, tell them simply and truthfully that the cat has died and won't come back. Avoid "put to sleep" with young children; it can make bedtime frightening.
- Let the child say goodbye in whatever way they choose, whether that's a last stroke, a picture slipped into the box or picking which blanket goes with the cat.
- Offer a small job, like picking a photo, writing the name for the urn label or keeping the collar safe. Children cope better with something to do.
- Phone the clinic or a Reims pet crematory once the goodbye is done, and choose private cremation if the child will want the ashes back.
- Warn school or daycare that the family has had a loss, so a teacher knows why your child is quiet or upset.

Why does the Reims page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023) reports about 44.91%[1] of France residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Reims?
The closest communities we cover are Paris (about 81 miles), Neuilly-sur-Seine (about 84 miles) and Versailles (about 92 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Reims too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Can I keep my cat's whiskers and fur before cremation?
Yes, and it's easiest before collection. Clip a small lock of fur from somewhere hidden, like the chest or behind a back leg, and keep it in an envelope or small bag. Shed whiskers turn up in beds and on windowsills for weeks, and a glass vial keeps them safe. Many providers can also take a fur clipping or paw print for you if you ask on the first call.
What if my cat died outdoors or was hit by a car near Reims?
Bring gloves, a towel and a box, lift your cat gently and take them home or straight to your vet. A vet can scan for a microchip if you're not sure it's your cat, and can arrange cremation from there. A private cremation is still entirely possible, and so is a proper goodbye; the circumstances don't change that. Take someone with you if you can.
What's the difference between private and communal cremation for a cat?
In a private cremation your cat is cremated alone and every bit of ash returned is theirs. In a communal cremation several animals are cremated together and no ashes come back; they're usually scattered in a memorial garden. Some providers also offer partitioned cremation, where pets share the chamber with dividers. Private typically costs about 2.0x[8] the communal price.
Can I take my cat to the crematory myself?
Usually, yes, and with a cat it's easy. Call first to agree a time, then place your cat in a carrier or a box lined with a blanket, on the floor or back seat of the car, and drive straight there. Many families find this last drive meaningful. It also saves the collection fee, which for a cat can be a large part of the total.
