Saying goodbye to your cat in Elmhurst

Elmhurst, Illinois

Cat aftercare in Elmhurst: the local picture

Elmhurst is an established DuPage County suburb about 16 miles west of the Loop, with a busy downtown around its Union Pacific West Metra station and Elmhurst University a few blocks north. Over the past few decades many original houses have been torn down for larger ones, so a 1920s bungalow may stand beside brand-new construction. Driveways and alley garages vary block by block, so tell the provider where to park and which door to use.

July highs in Elmhurst climb into the mid-80s, and January brings lows around 19 degrees, with frozen ground from about December to March. If a pet dies in summer, lay the body on a hard basement floor or tiled bathroom, surrounded by bags of frozen vegetables or ice packs, and aim for collection within hours. Once winter sets in, a detached garage is usually cold enough for a wait of a day.

If the crematory serving Elmhurst only collects from your vet once a week, you may need to keep your cat at home for a few days. Wrapped in a towel, then sealed in a strong plastic bag, a cat keeps well in a chest freezer, and your vet may offer theirs. It sounds hard, but it's common practice in rural areas and doesn't affect cremation or any keepsakes you'd like.

Elmhurst's population is around 46,111, the 33rd-largest of the 151 Illinois communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Chicago, about 16 miles (26 km) away, which is where some providers serving Elmhurst are based.

Our pages for Villa Park (2 miles), Bellwood (4 miles) and Lombard (4 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Elmhurst as well.

Our estimate

7,200

How many cat-owning households Elmhurst has (estimate)

How we calculated this

46,111 ÷ 2.5 = 18,444 households; × 39% (cat) = 7,200. Multi-pet homes count once.

How we calculated this

7,200 cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 640 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

Cremation in Illinois, and what it means for cat owners

Human cremation sits at around 60.2%[3] in Illinois, and pet owners are split in a similar way. In one US survey of more than 2,000 dog and cat owners, 68% had chosen cremation for at least one past pet and 32% burial[5] (Cooney et al.). Many households had done both at different times. Your choice for this cat doesn't have to match the last one.

The Illinois percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Elmhurst, not as a count of pets.

Weather, timing and your cat in Elmhurst

Elmhurst winters are cold, with average lows at or below freezing in January, February, March and December. That gives you a little more time after a death in winter, but it also means frozen ground. If you were hoping to bury your cat in the garden, you may not be able to dig until spring, which is one reason many local families choose cremation first and bury the ashes later.

Indoor cats who spend winter pressed against radiators and sunny windows can hide a slow decline for weeks. If an older cat in Elmhurst is sleeping more, eating less or losing weight through January, February, March and December, mention it to your vet. And if you plan a home goodbye in winter, choose a warm room, lay out their bed and make sure the collection team has a clear, salted path to the door.

Cat cremation prices for Elmhurst families

One pet-care company estimates that over a lifetime a cat costs a US household about $32,170[6], so the cremation is a small line in a long story. Even so, it's the one bill you pay while grieving, which is why it helps to know the numbers first. In Elmhurst, private cremation, collection and a simple container usually add up to a few hundred dollars at most; the table shows the typical pieces.

By our math, Elmhurst loses roughly 640 cats a year. At the national private-cremation average of clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4], that's a market of about $0.1 million, big enough that asking two providers for a quote usually pays off.

What's allowed in Illinois after your cat dies

One rule matters more than any other if your cat bit or scratched someone in the last couple of weeks, or died after sudden changes in behavior: tell your vet before anything else. Where rabies occurs, public health rules may require testing, and that has to happen before cremation. In almost every other case, the rules below only come into play once you choose what to do with the ashes or the body.

Illinois keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Elmhurst.

We keep Illinois's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Illinois rules summary. Before a home burial in Elmhurst, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.

What to do first, and what can wait

  1. If your cat died at the clinic or an emergency hospital, during surgery, in an oxygen cage or overnight on a drip, nothing needs deciding before you leave. Ask the team to keep your cat in their cold room while you think.
  2. Ask to see your cat if you weren't there. Most hospitals will bring your cat to a quiet room wrapped in a blanket, and many owners say it helped more than they expected.
  3. Request a copy of the notes when a death came out of nowhere. A post-mortem is an option too, but only before the cremation, so raise it straight away if you want one.
  4. Tell the hospital which crematory you want. The provider an emergency hospital normally uses isn't necessarily your regular vet's, and you can pick either, or one you found on your own.
  5. Check that the hospital records private or communal correctly when they fill in the release paperwork, and take away a copy that carries your cat's name.
  6. Collect your cat's collar, carrier and blanket, or have the staff keep the blanket with your cat for the journey.

Remembering your cat in Elmhurst

Salt Creek winds through the east side of Elmhurst, the Illinois Prairie Path crosses the town, and Wilder Park, with its conservatory and gardens beside the art museum, is a favorite place to sit outside. Many residents remember a pet at one of those spots, or plant something where the animal used to sun itself in the yard. On narrow modern lots, keeping ashes indoors is just as usual.

Questions people ask

Will I have to travel to Chicago to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Chicago (roughly 16 miles from Elmhurst) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Why does the Elmhurst page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 60.2%[3] of Illinois residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Which nearby towns can I compare with Elmhurst?

The closest communities we cover are Villa Park (about 2 miles), Bellwood (about 4 miles) and Lombard (about 4 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Elmhurst too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Does the Elmhurst climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 85°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.

Can I bury my cat in the garden in Illinois?

In many places you can, with conditions such as depth, distance from water and owning the property. Rules vary within Illinois, so check with your city or council before digging. Dig deep enough to keep foxes, coyotes and dogs away. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your cat with you and bury the ashes later if you wish.

Is it better to bury a barn cat or have them cremated?

Either is fine. Many families near Elmhurst bury farm and barn cats on their own land, deep enough that foxes or coyotes can't disturb the grave and away from wells and streams. Communal cremation through your vet is an affordable alternative, and a private cremation makes sense for a cat you were especially close to or would like to keep if you ever move.
