Lombard, Illinois
Cat aftercare in Lombard: the local picture
Lombard is a DuPage County village about 20 miles west of Chicago, with a compact downtown near its Union Pacific West station, blocks of mid-century houses, and apartments and shopping around Yorktown on the south side. Most homes are single-family with a driveway or detached garage off the alley. If a pet dies in the house, tell the provider which entrance is easiest; carrying an animal down narrow basement stairs is harder than it sounds.
Lombard summers peak in the mid-80s, January nights fall to about 19 degrees, with the ground frozen from December through March. On a humid August day, don't leave a pet's body on carpet or a bed, which hold heat; move it to a basement or tiled floor with ice packs and plan collection within hours. In winter an unheated porch or garage keeps things stable overnight.
One advantage of a town the size of Lombard is that people know each other. Your vet probably knows the crematory staff personally and can tell you honestly how they work, including whether a private cremation really means your cat is alone in the chamber. Don't be shy about asking what they'd choose for their own cat.
Lombard's population is around 44,399, the 34th-largest of the 151 Illinois communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Lombard are based about 20 miles away in Chicago, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
The closest communities we cover are Villa Park (2 miles), Glen Ellyn (2 miles) and Addison (4 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Lombard too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

How many cat-owning households Lombard has (estimate)
How we calculated this
44,399 ÷ 2.5 = 17,760 households; × 39% (cat) = 6,950. Multi-pet homes count once.

How we calculated this
6,950 cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 620 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

The local attitude to cremation
Cremation is now the majority choice for people in Illinois, at about 60.2%[3], but burial still has deep roots here. You'll see both among cat owners. A cat's small size makes a garden burial easy where it's allowed, and a cat's small amount of ash makes cremation easy to live with. Neither is more proper than the other.
The Illinois percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Lombard, not as a count of pets.
Timing your cat's aftercare in Lombard's climate
With average lows at or below freezing for about 4 months a year, Lombard has a long stretch when the ground is too hard to dig, and frost can heave a shallow grave. A cat's grave needs to be deep enough to keep foxes and other animals away, which is hard work in frozen soil. Cremating now and burying the ashes later means a much smaller hole, almost anywhere you like, once the ground softens.
Cold weather brings its own risks for outdoor cats. They look for warmth under car hoods and in engine bays, so a quick knock on the hood before starting the car is a common habit in places like Lombard. Antifreeze is another winter danger: it tastes sweet to cats and is highly toxic. If an outdoor cat dies suddenly in January, February, March and December, tell your vet what you know; they may want to check the cause.

How much to budget for your cat
US pet services prices, including vet bills, were about 42% higher in 2025 than in 2019[5], so older price lists you find online may understate what Lombard providers charge today. Use the table to spot a quote that's far out of line, then ask for an itemized total covering collection, cremation and the container.
By our estimate Lombard families would spend around $0.1 million a year if every one of the roughly 620 cats lost here were privately cremated at clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4], the national average. Competition for that work is real, so quotes differ.

What Illinois allows: burial, scattering and more
If your cat was put to sleep, the drug used stays in the body after death and can poison a dog, fox or bird of prey that digs up a grave. That's why many authorities discourage burying euthanized pets anywhere animals can reach them, and why cremation is simpler for most families. The notes below show what Illinois says about burial and scattering.

What to do first, and what can wait
- If your cat is elderly or newly diagnosed, begin while there's time. A kidney, thyroid or cancer diagnosis often gives weeks or months to plan quietly.
- Ask your vet what the end is likely to look like for your cat's condition, and which signs mean it's time to talk again.
- Choose the aftercare now: private or communal cremation, and who collects your cat. Compare prices with our cost calculator while you're calm.
- Write your wishes down and have the clinic attach them to your cat's file, so that a locum or an out-of-hours hospital in Lombard knows what you've decided.
- Pick the place for the goodbye: at home, in the clinic's quiet room or in the garden on a warm day. Save a mobile vet's number if you'd prefer home.
- Spend the good days well. Favorite food, sunny windows, brushing, photos. Planning is there so the last days can be about your cat, not phone calls.
Keeping your cat's memory close in Lombard
Lombard calls itself the Lilac Village, and every May the blooms at Lilacia Park draw visitors from across the region. Some families plant a lilac of their own in memory of a pet, a shrub that returns each spring for decades. The Illinois Prairie Path also crosses the village, and many residents have a favorite stretch of it where they think about an animal they've lost.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Lombard?
Usually yes. Villa Park is about 2 miles away, Glen Ellyn is about 2 miles away and Addison is about 4 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in Illinois?
For people, yes: about 60.2%[3] of Illinois deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Lombard follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Lombard?
January, February, March and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 85°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
How many cat owners live in Lombard?
By our estimate, about 6,950 households in Lombard have at least one cat, and around 620 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 44,399, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Should my other cats see the cat who died?
Many owners let their other cats sniff and sit with the body for a few minutes before collection, and it does no harm. Some cats show interest, others walk away; both are normal. Afterwards, keep feeding and litter routines steady. If a remaining cat stops eating for more than a day or two, call your vet, as cats don't cope well with going without food.
What if my cat died outdoors or was hit by a car near Lombard?
Bring gloves, a towel and a box, lift your cat gently and take them home or straight to your vet. A vet can scan for a microchip if you're not sure it's your cat, and can arrange cremation from there. A private cremation is still entirely possible, and so is a proper goodbye; the circumstances don't change that. Take someone with you if you can.
