Moscow, Idaho
Getting help for your cat in Moscow
Moscow is the Latah County seat and home of the University of Idaho, set in the rolling wheat and lentil hills of the Palouse. Pullman and its university sit eight miles west across the Washington line, and Spokane is about 67 miles north. Many residents rent near campus, others own older houses on the tree-lined streets or farmhouses out in the hills, so tell any service whether you are in town or on a gravel county road.
Winter is long here: freezing nights can run from November into April, and snow drifts across the open Palouse roads. In those months a cold mudroom or entryway is enough to keep your pet safe overnight, wrapped in a blanket inside a box. August afternoons can reach the mid-80s, so on a warm day choose a shaded basement instead. Either way, arrangements can usually wait until morning.
In Moscow, your vet is likely to be the person who arranges most of this. Small-town practices often have a regular collection day with one crematory, which keeps costs down. If your cat dies between collections, the clinic will keep them in a cold room until the van comes. Ask how long that might be, and whether you can send your cat with their own blanket or a favorite toy mouse.
Moscow's population is around 26,721, the 12th-largest of the 13 Idaho communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Spokane, about 67 miles (108 km) away, which is where some providers serving Moscow are based.
Moscow sits within easy reach of Pullman (8 miles), Lewiston (23 miles) and Spokane Valley (65 miles, a larger centre). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Moscow; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
4,150
Estimated cat-owning households in Moscow
How we calculated this
26,721 ÷ 2.5 = 10,688 households; × 39% (cat) = 4,150. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
370
Estimated cat losses in Moscow each year
How we calculated this
4,150 cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 370 a year. Treat it as a minimum.
39%[1]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[2]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.
71.2%[3]
The NFDA projected Idaho's cremation rate at 71.2% for 2024.
clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4]
CareCredit's 2025 study put US cat euthanasia at $158 in clinic and $359 at home, cat cremation at $180 and cat cemetery burial at $566.
The published sources behind those figures are American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science.

Local habits around cremation and burial
Local habits show up in small ways. Where about 71.2%[3] of people are cremated, as in Idaho, relatives are more likely to keep an urn themselves and less likely to question yours. Some owners keep a cat's ashes so they can one day be placed with a person, or scattered together with another cat from the same home. If that's something you'd like, keep the ashes sealed and labelled, and check the rules for any cemetery you have in mind.
For the Idaho figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Moscow rather than as pet data.
Timing your cat's aftercare in Moscow's climate
Snow and ice can delay collection, especially on rural roads. The upside is time: in an unheated room, garage or porch that stays near freezing, a cat can safely wait a day or two. Wrap your cat in a blanket, place them in a sturdy lidded box and make sure other pets and wildlife can't reach them.
With average lows at or below freezing for about 6 months a year, Moscow has a long stretch when the ground is too hard to dig, and frost can heave a shallow grave. A cat's grave needs to be deep enough to keep foxes and other animals away, which is hard work in frozen soil. Cremating now and burying the ashes later means a much smaller hole, almost anywhere you like, once the ground softens.

Cat cremation costs around Moscow
In the US, private cremation for a cat averages about $180[4], one of the lowest prices on any crematory's list because cats sit in the lightest weight band. What you pay in Moscow depends mostly on everything around the cremation: home collection, an after-hours call, a decorative urn or a paw print. The table shows typical national figures.
Put another way: around 370 cats die in Moscow each year (our estimate), and private cremation averages clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4] nationally. That adds up to roughly $0.1 million a year locally, which is why prices and packages differ so much from one provider to the next.

Burial and scattering rules for Idaho
If you leave your cat at the clinic without choosing, most practices will arrange communal cremation by default, and you won't get ashes back. That's legal and dignified, but it can't be undone. Before you sign a release form, check that the box you've ticked matches what you want. The notes below then cover what Idaho allows for burial and scattering.
Idaho keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Moscow.
The Idaho page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Moscow's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
Step by step in Moscow
- If you find your cat outdoors, take a box, a towel and a pair of gloves with you. Ease them onto the towel, then carry them back to the house or the car.
- If you're not sure the cat is yours, or a neighbor found them, ask a vet to scan for a microchip. Most clinics will do it quickly.
- Keep your cat in a cool, closed room at home until you've spoken to your vet or a crematory that serves Moscow.
- Ask for private or communal cremation and the full price, including collection or drop-off.
- Update the microchip record and tell anyone who helped you look for your cat, so they can stop searching.
- Give yourself some grace. When an outdoor cat dies suddenly, owners often blame themselves without cause. A cat that roams is doing exactly what it wanted to do.
Memorials and keepsakes for your cat
A college town has its own pattern of pet ownership: graduate students with a cat that has followed them through three apartments, faculty families with older animals, and farm households keeping barn cats. Leases, moves and graduations mean many owners here want a memorial that travels. Cremation, with ashes kept in a small box or urn, lets a companion come along to the next city.

Questions people ask
Roughly how many cats die in Moscow each year?
Our estimate is around 370. It comes from Moscow's population (about 26,721), the average household size, the share of homes with a cat (about 4,150 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Where are the providers that serve Moscow actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Spokane, about 67 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Moscow and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Is cremation common in Idaho?
For people, yes: about 71.2%[3] of Idaho deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Moscow follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Moscow?
Usually yes. Pullman is about 8 miles away, Lewiston is about 23 miles away and Spokane Valley is about 65 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Can I keep my cat's whiskers and fur before cremation?
Yes, and it's easiest before collection. Clip a small lock of fur from somewhere hidden, like the chest or behind a back leg, and keep it in an envelope or small bag. Shed whiskers turn up in beds and on windowsills for weeks, and a glass vial keeps them safe. Many providers can also take a fur clipping or paw print for you if you ask on the first call.
What if my cat died outdoors or was hit by a car near Moscow?
Bring gloves, a towel and a box, lift your cat gently and take them home or straight to your vet. A vet can scan for a microchip if you're not sure it's your cat, and can arrange cremation from there. A private cremation is still entirely possible, and so is a proper goodbye; the circumstances don't change that. Take someone with you if you can.
