Saying goodbye to your cat in Frankfurt

Frankfurt, Hesse

How cat cremation works in Frankfurt

In Germany it is often permitted to bury a pet in your own garden, subject to local rules such as groundwater protection zones, but the majority of Frankfurt households rent without any garden, which makes cremation the usual route. Ask whether the quote is for an individual cremation, whether collection from home is included and how the ashes are returned. If your pet was registered with the city or an insurer, remember to let them know too.

Most people in Frankfurt live in rented apartments, from the Gründerzeit buildings of Nordend and Sachsenhausen to newer blocks in the outer districts, and many get around by U-Bahn or bike. A large pet that dies on the fourth floor of a building without a lift is a genuine logistical problem. Ask your vet or a pet cremation provider about home collection, and mention the stairs and parking so they send enough help.

If your cat died at an emergency or specialty hospital in Frankfurt, aftercare is usually arranged from there, and it may be with a different crematory from the one your regular vet uses. You're free to ask for your cat to be transferred to the provider you prefer. It usually takes one phone call, and it's worth making if you want a witnessed cremation, a particular urn or simply a clearer price.

About 764,000 people live in Frankfurt, which makes it the largest of the 2 Hesse communities we cover.

Families in Frankfurt often end up using a provider from Wiesbaden (20 miles), Mainz (21 miles) and Mannheim (44 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

In 2023, 76.0% of deaths in Germany were cremated (164 crematoria).

clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[2]

CareCredit's 2025 study put US cat euthanasia at $158 in clinic and $359 at home, cat cremation at $180 and cat cemetery burial at $566.

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Why cremation is familiar in Germany, or isn't

In Germany, about 76.0%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this common, pet crematories tend to be plentiful and used to small animals, so a private cat cremation, a witnessed service or a paw print is rarely a special request. Use that choice: ask two providers for a written price rather than accepting the first one you're given.

The Germany figure comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

How Frankfurt's weather affects the first few hours

Local weather affects two things: how quickly your cat should be collected, and whether a burial or scattering outdoors is practical. Your provider in Frankfurt will know the seasons well, so ask them what they'd suggest at this time of year.

What you'll likely pay, and what adds to it

In Frankfurt, as in most of Europe, your vet is usually the first point of contact and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium, with the fee added to your vet bill. You can also contact a crematorium directly. Ask for the price of individual (private) and collective (communal) cremation for a cat, and whether collection is included.

Burial, ashes and the rules in Hesse

You don't need a permit to have your cat cremated, but what you do afterwards, burying them in the garden or scattering their ashes in a park, can be governed by local rules. Here's what applies in Hesse.

Germany has about 15.7 million pet cats[5], far more than its dogs. Burying a cat on your own land is allowed with at least 50 cm of soil cover, outside water-protection areas[6], and there are roughly 120 pet cemeteries[7]. Pet crematoria (Tierkrematorium) offer individual (Einzeleinäscherung) and collective cremation; ask which one you're booking.

A simple checklist for the next two days

  1. If it's a child's cat, tell them simply and truthfully that the cat has died and won't come back. Avoid "put to sleep" with young children; it can make bedtime frightening.
  2. Let the child say goodbye if they want to: stroke the cat's fur, tuck in a drawing or choose the blanket your cat will travel in.
  3. Offer a small job: choosing a photograph, printing the name that will go on the urn, looking after the collar. Having a task makes the loss easier for a child to carry.
  4. Phone the clinic or a Frankfurt pet crematory once the goodbye is done, and choose private cremation if the child will want the ashes back.
  5. Warn school or daycare about what's happened at home, so the staff understand if your child seems withdrawn or tearful.
  6. Plan a small ceremony for when the ashes return: a few quiet minutes at a window or out in the garden is enough. There are more suggestions, age by age, in our guide for families.

Remembering your cat in Frankfurt

Frankfurt is one of Germany's warmer cities, and in July and August top-floor flats in the inner districts can stay hot through the night. If your pet dies then, move the body to a tiled floor or cellar storeroom, cover it with a towel over ice packs and aim to have it collected within a day. In the colder months you have more time, provided it is kept away from radiators.

Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Frankfurt?

Usually yes. Wiesbaden is about 20 miles away, Mainz is about 21 miles away and Mannheim is about 44 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

How do Germany attitudes to cremation compare?

Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Germany human cremation rate at about 76.0%[1]. We show it on the Frankfurt page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Should my other cats see the cat who died?

Many owners let their other cats sniff and sit with the body for a few minutes before collection, and it does no harm. Some cats show interest, others walk away; both are normal. Afterwards, keep feeding and litter routines steady. If a remaining cat stops eating for more than a day or two, call your vet, as cats don't cope well with going without food.

Is individual cat cremation available in Frankfurt?

In most European cities, yes. Pet crematoria usually offer collective cremation, where ashes aren't returned, and individual cremation, where they are. Your vet can arrange either, or you can contact a crematorium directly. Ask for a written price for a cat and confirmation that the cremation is individual. Some crematoria also let you attend.

How much ash will I get back from my cat?

Much less than people expect. Cremated remains weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight[3], so a 12 lb cat would be expected to return about 6.7 oz[8], roughly a teacup's worth. An urn of about 12 cubic inches is usually enough[9]. Our urn size calculator works it out from your cat's weight.

Will a pet collection service come to an apartment in Frankfurt?

Yes. City providers regularly collect from apartments and high-rises. Tell them the floor, whether there's an elevator, where they can park and whether the concierge needs notice. With a cat, one person with a covered basket is usually enough, so collection is quick and discreet. If you'd rather, you can also take your cat to the clinic yourself by car or taxi.
