Cremation in Germany, and what it means for cat owners
High cremation rates, about 76.0%[1] for people in Germany, often go hand in hand with pet crematories with viewing rooms and set farewell times. Many will let you stay while your cat is placed in the chamber, or wait on site and take the ashes home the same day. It costs a little more and needs booking, but for some owners, seeing it through is what lets them rest.
That Germany rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Mainz only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

Burial and scattering rules for Rhineland-Palatinate
Before you bury, scatter or plan a memorial, it's worth checking what Rhineland-Palatinate allows. Keeping ashes at home is allowed everywhere we know of. Burying a whole cat and scattering in public places are where rules come in, usually to protect water supplies and shared spaces, and renters normally need the landlord's permission for any garden burial.
Germany has about 15.7 million pet cats[7], far more than its dogs. Burying a cat on your own land is allowed with at least 50 cm of soil cover, outside water-protection areas[8], and there are roughly 120 pet cemeteries[9]. Pet crematoria (Tierkrematorium) offer individual (Einzeleinäscherung) and collective cremation; ask which one you're booking.
What to do first, and what can wait
- If you find your cat outdoors, bring gloves, a towel and a box. Lift them gently onto the towel and carry them home or to your car.
- If you're not sure the cat is yours, or someone nearby found them, any vet can check for a microchip. It takes a clinic only a minute or two.
- Keep your cat in a cool, closed room at home until you've spoken to your vet or a crematory that serves Mainz.
- Ask for private or communal cremation and the full price, including collection or drop-off.
- Update the microchip record and let the neighbors and friends who were out looking know, so nobody keeps searching.
- Give yourself some grace. When an outdoor cat dies suddenly, owners often blame themselves without cause. A cat that roams is doing exactly what it wanted to do.
Keeping your cat close

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Mainz?
