Why cremation is familiar in Germany, or isn't
High cremation rates, about 76.0%[1] for people in Germany, often go hand in hand with pet crematories with viewing rooms and set farewell times. Many will let you stay while your cat is placed in the chamber, or wait on site and take the ashes home the same day. It costs a little more and needs booking, but for some owners, seeing it through is what lets them rest.
We take the Germany rate from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Heidelberg, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

Burial and scattering rules for Baden-Wurttemberg
One rule matters more than any other if your cat bit or scratched someone in the last couple of weeks, or died after sudden changes in behavior: tell your vet before anything else. Where rabies occurs, public health rules may require testing, and that has to happen before cremation. In almost every other case, the rules below only come into play once you choose what to do with the ashes or the body.
Germany has about 15.7 million pet cats[7], far more than its dogs. Burying a cat on your own land is allowed with at least 50 cm of soil cover, outside water-protection areas[8], and there are roughly 120 pet cemeteries[9]. Pet crematoria (Tierkrematorium) offer individual (Einzeleinäscherung) and collective cremation; ask which one you're booking.
The first 48 hours, step by step
- If it's a child's cat, use plain, honest words: the cat has died and isn't coming home. Steer clear of "put to sleep" around little ones, who may then be scared to go to bed.
- Let the child say goodbye if they want to: stroke the cat's fur, tuck in a drawing or choose the blanket your cat will travel in.
- Offer a small job, like picking a photo, writing the name for the urn label or keeping the collar safe. Children cope better with something to do.
- Phone the clinic or a Heidelberg pet crematory once the goodbye is done, and choose private cremation if the child will want the ashes back.
- Warn school or daycare that the family has had a loss, so a teacher knows why your child is quiet or upset.

Is cremation common in Germany?
For people, yes: about 76.0%[1] of Germany deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Heidelberg follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Will I have to travel to Mannheim to arrange things?
