Getting help for your cat in Toulon
Toulon is a hilly port city squeezed between the sea and Mont Faron, with apartments packed into the old town and the districts around the harbor, and houses with gardens on the slopes and in neighboring towns. Many pets here live in flats with steep stairs and little parking. When you ask for home collection, mention your street, floor and whether a vehicle can stop nearby.
Toulon has a hot, dry Mediterranean summer, with long stretches of sun and occasional heat waves, and mild, sometimes windy winters when the mistral blows. In summer, keep your pet's body cool with ice packs wrapped in a towel and the shutters closed, and arrange collection within hours if you can. Fire risk in the surrounding hills in summer can also affect roads.
Plenty of cat owners in Toulon live alone, and that can make the practical side feel heavier. Who helps you lift the box, who drives? Most providers here will collect from inside your home, and your vet's team can meet you at the car if you bring your cat in. It's fine to ask a friend or neighbor just to sit with you while you make the calls.
About 176,000 people live in Toulon, which makes it the 4th-largest of the 6 Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur communities we cover. Marseille, roughly 30 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Toulon run from there.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Marseille (31 miles, a larger centre), Saint-Tropez (37 miles) and Cannes (62 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[2]
CareCredit's 2025 study put US cat euthanasia at $158 in clinic and $359 at home, cat cremation at $180 and cat cemetery burial at $566.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Cremation traditions in France
Only about 44.91%[1] of people in France are cremated, so burial remains the local tradition, and for cats that often means a small grave in the garden. Pet cremation is still widely available, though, and many cat owners choose it because it lets them keep their cat close even if they move. Your vet will be used to both requests.
The France figure comes from ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Timing your cat's aftercare in Toulon's climate
Wherever you are, the rule is the same: keep your cat cool, indoors and out of direct sun until they're collected, ideally in a lined box or basket in the coolest room. In warm weather, aim for collection within the day. In cold weather you have a little more time, but frozen ground can make a garden burial impossible until it thaws.

Cat cremation costs around Toulon
Cats outnumber dogs in much of Europe: there are about 108.3 million[4] pet cats on the continent against 89.6 million[5] dogs. Prices follow the same logic everywhere: collective cremation costs less than individual, and a cat sits in the lowest weight band. The table shows published examples to give you a feel for France.

Rules worth knowing in Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur
Before you bury, scatter or plan a memorial, it's worth checking what Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur allows. Keeping ashes at home is allowed everywhere we know of. Burying a whole cat and scattering in public places are where rules come in, usually to protect water supplies and shared spaces, and renters normally need the landlord's permission for any garden burial.
France has about 14.9 million pet cats[7], almost twice its dog population. Your vet will usually offer incinération collective or individuelle; only individual cremation returns your cat's ashes. Cats in France must be identified, so after your cat dies, let the national identification register know, or ask your vet to do it.
A simple checklist for the next two days
- If it's a child's cat, use plain, honest words: the cat has died and isn't coming home. Steer clear of "put to sleep" around little ones, who may then be scared to go to bed.
- Let the child say goodbye in whatever way they choose, whether that's a last stroke, a picture slipped into the box or picking which blanket goes with the cat.
- Offer a small job: choosing a photograph, printing the name that will go on the urn, looking after the collar. Having a task makes the loss easier for a child to carry.
- Phone the clinic or a Toulon pet crematory after the goodbye, and go for private cremation if your child is likely to want the ashes home.
- Warn school or daycare that the family has had a loss, so a teacher knows why your child is quiet or upset.
- Plan a small ceremony for when the ashes return, even five minutes in the garden or by a window. Our guide for families has more ideas for different ages.
Ways to remember your cat locally
Many Toulon families remember pets through the places they shared: the beaches at Le Mourillon, the paths on Mont Faron, or the coves along the coast toward the peninsula. Others keep an urn at home and climb back to those spots on anniversaries. If you'd like to scatter a little ash by the sea or in the hills, ask the city or land manager about the rules first.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Toulon?
Usually yes. Marseille is about 31 miles away, Saint-Tropez is about 37 miles away and Cannes is about 62 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Where are the providers that serve Toulon actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Marseille, about 30 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Toulon and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Why does the Toulon page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023) reports about 44.91%[1] of France residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can I bury my cat in the garden in Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur?
In many places you can, with conditions such as depth, distance from water and owning the property. Rules vary within Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur, so check with your city or council before digging. Dig deep enough to keep foxes, coyotes and dogs away. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your cat with you and bury the ashes later if you wish.
Can I keep my cat's whiskers and fur before cremation?
Yes, and it's easiest before collection. Clip a small lock of fur from somewhere hidden, like the chest or behind a back leg, and keep it in an envelope or small bag. Shed whiskers turn up in beds and on windowsills for weeks, and a glass vial keeps them safe. Many providers can also take a fur clipping or paw print for you if you ask on the first call.
Why did my cat hide before they died?
Hiding is instinct. A cat who feels ill or weak looks for somewhere small, quiet and protected, like under a bed, in a closet or beneath a deck. It doesn't mean your cat was frightened of you or that you missed something obvious; cats are very good at concealing illness until late. Many owners find their cat this way, and it's okay to need help with what comes next.
