Newport, Vermont
How cat cremation works in Newport
The Kingdom is among the coldest corners of New England. Newport's January nights dip to about 3F, and frost grips the soil November through April. With a backyard grave impossible for so long, households with a cat, ferret or cockatiel nearly always choose cremation. Keep the body somewhere chilly but above freezing, like a mudroom or cellar stairway, until the clinic can receive it, even if that takes a day or two.
Lake Memphremagog stretches north from Newport well into Canada, and most of its water lies in Quebec. Many residents treat the waterfront boardwalk and the city beach as part of daily life. Some owners later carry a small amount of cremated remains to the shore, while others keep them on a sill where the lake is visible. Before scattering on city or state property, ask about local restrictions.
Many vets around Newport run mixed practices, caring for cattle, horses and dogs as well as cats, and in calving or lambing season they can be out on farms for long stretches. They still arrange cat cremation routinely. Call ahead so someone is at the clinic when you arrive, and if your vet is out on a call, ask the front desk to take the details and ring you back.
About 4,274 people live in Newport, which makes it the 10th-largest of the 12 Vermont communities we cover.
For a second opinion on price, Stowe (40 miles), St. Albans (44 miles) and Montpelier (50 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Newport routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
Our estimate
670
Newport: cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
4,274 ÷ 2.5 = 1,710 households; × 39% (cat) = 670. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate

How we calculated this
670 cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 60 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

Local habits around cremation and burial
In Vermont, about 78.1%[3] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this common, pet crematories tend to be plentiful and used to small animals, so a private cat cremation, a witnessed service or a paw print is rarely a special request. Use that choice: ask two providers for a written price rather than accepting the first one you're given.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Vermont figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Newport tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Timing your cat's aftercare in Newport's climate
Newport winters are cold, with average lows at or below freezing in January, February, March, April, November and December. That gives you a little more time after a death in winter, but it also means frozen ground. If you were hoping to bury your cat in the garden, you may not be able to dig until spring, which is one reason many local families choose cremation first and bury the ashes later.
Snow and ice can delay collection, especially on rural roads. The upside is time: in an unheated room, garage or porch that stays near freezing, a cat can safely wait a day or two. Wrap your cat in a blanket, place them in a sturdy lidded box and make sure other pets and wildlife can't reach them.

What cat cremation costs in Newport
Expect the total to depend on four things: private or communal, how your cat is collected, what the ashes come back in and whether you add a keepsake. The weight of a cat barely moves the price. The ranges below are typical US figures; ask any Newport provider for a written total before you agree.
Here's a number you won't find elsewhere: if every one of the roughly 60 cats lost in Newport each year were privately cremated at the national average of about clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4], local families would spend around $0 million a year. That's our estimate, and it's why several providers compete for work here.

Burial and scattering rules for Vermont
Most of the decisions after a cat dies are yours alone. The exceptions are burial and scattering, which Vermont and your local council or city may regulate, and, in some places, updating your cat's microchip record so the database knows they've died.
To find your county or city office in Vermont, start with the official Vermont local government directory.
The rules that apply across Vermont (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Vermont page. Newport may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Take a breath. Nothing has to happen in the next hour. If your cat died at home, lay them on a towel, close their eyes if you can and tuck their legs in as if they were sleeping.
- Take anything you want to keep now: snip a little chest fur, or some from inside a hind leg, gather any whiskers that have dropped in their bed, and set the collar or tag aside.
- Place your cat in a box or basket on top of the blanket they slept on, then move it to whichever room stays coolest and shut the door to keep other animals out.
- Call your vet (after hours, an emergency clinic will do) and describe what has happened. If you have any doubt, they can confirm your cat has died, and they'll tell you how their aftercare works.
- Decide on private or communal cremation. This is the choice that shapes everything else, including the price.
- Arrange collection either from the house or the vet's, or take your cat to the provider yourself, and get the full cost written down.
- Let yourself grieve. Tell the people who knew your cat, and put the bowls away when you're ready, not before.
Keeping your cat close
Newport is the only city in Orleans County, set where Lake Memphremagog ends at its southern shore in the Northeast Kingdom, a few miles below the Quebec line. Larger towns are a long drive away, so fewer cremation services come this far north. Ask your Newport-area vet in advance which provider they use, how often it makes runs into the Kingdom, and whether you would need to bring your companion in yourself.

Questions people ask
How many cat owners live in Newport?
By our estimate, about 670 households in Newport have at least one cat, and around 60 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 4,274, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Newport?
January, February, March, April, November and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 76°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Newport?
The closest communities we cover are Stowe (about 40 miles), St. Albans (about 44 miles) and Montpelier (about 50 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Newport too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Is cremation common in Vermont?
For people, yes: about 78.1%[3] of Vermont deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Newport follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Does pet insurance pay for cat cremation?
Usually not under a standard policy, although euthanasia may be covered when it's medically necessary[6]. Some add-ons help: one reimbursed up to $250 toward cremation and burial[7], and another up to $500 for end-of-life costs[8]. Either would cover a typical private cat cremation. Check your policy before you pay a provider in Newport.
My local vet in Newport is small. Can they still arrange cremation?
Almost certainly. Small practices usually work with a crematory in a larger centre and have a regular collection day, and your cat is kept in a cold room at the clinic until then. Ask which crematory they use, whether private cremation is available, what it costs for a cat and roughly how long the ashes take to come back.
