Cat cremation in Murray: how it usually works
Murray Park, with Little Cottonwood Creek running through it, is a gathering place for many families, and plenty of pets here have enjoyed its lawns and shade over the years. When choosing how to remember a pet, some residents think of places like this; others focus on home. Either way, asking for your pet's ashes back gives you time to decide.
Murray's position on the valley floor means cold, hazy inversions in winter and mid-90s heat in July. In either season a pet's body needs a cool resting place quickly, such as a basement floor, a tiled bathroom or an unheated garage. Wrap it in a towel, keep curious children and other animals away if that helps, and contact your vet or an aftercare service before the day is out.
In a smaller place like Murray, cat cremation is usually arranged through the local vet, who sends pets to a crematory in a larger centre, often somewhere around Salt Lake City. That's why the ashes can take a little longer to come back and why pickup may happen on set days of the week. For a cat, the wait tends to be short, because small pets are easy to transport and are often returned by mail or via the clinic.
Murray is home to about 53,297 people, the 18th-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Murray are based about 7 miles away in Salt Lake City, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
The closest communities we cover are Midvale (3 miles), Taylorsville (3 miles) and Holladay (3 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Murray too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate
8,300
Estimated cat-owning households in Murray
How we calculated this
53,297 ÷ 2.5 = 21,319 households; × 39% (cat) = 8,300. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
740
Estimated cat losses in Murray each year
How we calculated this
8,300 cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 740 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Why cremation is familiar in Utah, or isn't
About 46.1%[3] of people in Utah are cremated, lower than in many places. Older relatives may expect a garden burial and younger ones may assume cremation. Talk it through if you like, but it's your household's decision. Some families do both: cremation first, then a small burial of the ashes under a plant or stone, so there's still somewhere to visit.
We take the Utah rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Murray, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Timing your cat's aftercare in Murray's climate
Weather extremes are hard on elderly cats. Many owners in Murray see a change in the hottest weeks, when a cat with kidney disease drinks more and eats less, or in the coldest, when stiff joints make the litter box a struggle. Ask your vet which signs to watch for in each season and whether a home visit is possible if heat or ice makes the journey too much.
If you're taking your cat to the vet or crematory yourself, the season changes how. In summer, cool the car first and go straight there; a parked car in Murray heats up within minutes. In winter, a cold car is fine, but allow extra time on icy roads. Either way, a towel underneath and a blanket over the top keeps things dignified.

What cat owners in Murray typically pay
US pet services prices, including vet bills, were about 42% higher in 2025 than in 2019[5], so older price lists you find online may understate what Murray providers charge today. Use the table to spot a quote that's far out of line, then ask for an itemized total covering collection, cremation and the container.
Multiply it out: roughly 740 cats a year in Murray (our estimate) at the national private-cremation average of clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4] is about $0.1 million of local spending. That is why it pays to ask two providers, not one.

Local rules in Utah
Most of the decisions after a cat dies are yours alone. The exceptions are burial and scattering, which Utah and your local council or city may regulate, and, in some places, updating your cat's microchip record so the database knows they've died.
Utah keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Murray.
The Utah page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Murray's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
What to do first, and what can wait
- If you find your cat outdoors, take a box, a towel and a pair of gloves with you. Ease them onto the towel, then carry them back to the house or the car.
- If you're not sure the cat is yours, or a neighbor found them, ask a vet to scan for a microchip. Most clinics will do it quickly.
- Keep your cat in a cool, closed room in the house while you get hold of your vet or a crematory covering Murray.
- Ask for private or communal cremation and the full price, including collection or drop-off.
- Update the microchip record and tell anyone who helped you look for your cat, so they can stop searching.
- Give yourself some grace. When an outdoor cat dies suddenly, owners often blame themselves without cause. A cat that roams is doing exactly what it wanted to do.
Ways to remember your cat locally
Murray sits in the heart of the Salt Lake Valley, about seven miles south of downtown, with its own old Main Street, a major hospital campus and some of the valley's older neighborhoods of brick bungalows and postwar homes. Many residents are close to several vet clinics, which makes timing easier. Ask your clinic which cremation provider it uses and whether they offer home pickup.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Salt Lake City to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Salt Lake City (roughly 7 miles from Murray) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How many cat owners live in Murray?
By our estimate, about 8,300 households in Murray have at least one cat, and around 740 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 53,297, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Murray?
January, February and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 94°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Murray?
The closest communities we cover are Midvale (about 3 miles), Taylorsville (about 3 miles) and Holladay (about 3 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Murray too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How many cats are there in Murray?
By our estimate, about 8,300 households in Murray have at least one cat, and around 740 cats are lost there each year. We calculate this from the city's population, average household size and national cat ownership and lifespan figures; the method is shown on this page. Many homes have more than one cat, so the true number of cats is higher.
Can I keep my cat's whiskers and fur before cremation?
Yes, and it's easiest before collection. Clip a small lock of fur from somewhere hidden, like the chest or behind a back leg, and keep it in an envelope or small bag. Shed whiskers turn up in beds and on windowsills for weeks, and a glass vial keeps them safe. Many providers can also take a fur clipping or paw print for you if you ask on the first call.
