When your cat dies in Sherman: what happens next

Sherman, Texas

Getting help for your cat in Sherman

Many Sherman families spend weekends up at Lake Texoma or at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge on its southern arm. Scattering ashes on federal land or water there requires checking with the managing agency first. Closer to home, a flower bed, a favorite shade tree in the yard or a spot on family land needs no permission and can be visited anytime.

Sherman's August highs average around 93F, a bit milder than the Dallas area, but January lows near 34F bring the chance of ice and sleet. In hot weather, move your pet somewhere air-conditioned and lay them on a cool floor with frozen packs wrapped in cloth. In winter, an unheated mudroom or garage can keep the body cool overnight while you make arrangements.

In Sherman, your vet is likely to be the person who arranges most of this. Small-town practices often have a regular collection day with one crematory, which keeps costs down. If your cat dies between collections, the clinic will keep them in a cold room until the van comes. Ask how long that might be, and whether you can send your cat with their own blanket or a favorite toy mouse.

Sherman is home to about 52,417 people, the 72nd-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Sherman are based about 30 miles away in McKinney, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.

Our pages for Denison (10 miles), Anna (20 miles) and Celina (23 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Sherman as well.

Our estimate

8,200

Sherman: cat-owning households, our estimate

How we calculated this

52,417 ÷ 2.5 = 20,967 households; × 39% (cat) = 8,200. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.

Our estimate

730

cat deaths per year in Sherman, our estimate

How we calculated this

8,200 cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 730 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

39%[1]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[2]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

55.7%[3]

The NFDA projected Texas's cremation rate at 55.7% for 2024.

clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4]

CareCredit's 2025 study put US cat euthanasia at $158 in clinic and $359 at home, cat cremation at $180 and cat cemetery burial at $566.

Cremation traditions in Texas

In a place like Texas, with a human cremation rate near 55.7%[3] and burial still common, pet cemeteries often sit alongside crematories. Some let you bury a cat's ashes in a small plot or niche rather than a full grave, which costs far less and gives you somewhere to visit. Ask local providers whether they offer this if a grave matters to you but a garden burial doesn't suit.

The Texas figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

Sherman weather and timing

In the hottest months (June, July, August and September), outdoor cats go looking for shade under decks, in sheds and beneath parked cars, and a cat who is ill will often hide somewhere like that. If your cat hasn't come home in the heat, check the cool, dark places first. If you find them, use gloves and a towel, place them in a box and call your vet; there's no shame in needing help with this part.

Long, hot seasons like Sherman's bring more outdoor activity for cats and more traffic on warm evenings, and road losses are one of the hardest ways to lose a cat. If a neighbor or passer-by finds your cat, ask them to move your cat off the road onto a towel if they can, and bring a box and a blanket when you go. Your vet can check for a microchip if identity is uncertain, and then help with cremation.

Cat cremation prices for Sherman families

By our estimate, ~4.7 million[5] pet cats die in the US each year, so every provider serving Sherman prices cat cremation as routine work. The cremation itself is rarely the big number; add-ons are. Our cost calculator lets you add collection, an urn and a paw print to see a likely total, and the memorial budget planner helps if you'd like to spread spending on keepsakes over time.

Multiply it out: roughly 730 cats a year in Sherman (our estimate) at the national private-cremation average of clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4] is about $0.1 million of local spending. That is why it pays to ask two providers, not one.

Rules worth knowing in Texas

Pet crematories are lightly regulated in many places, so it's up to you to ask how they identify each animal and what private really means. The rules in Texas mostly cover what happens next: where a cat can be buried and where ashes can be scattered. The notes below cover the main points; your vet or local council can confirm anything specific to your address.

To find your county or city office in Texas, start with the official Texas local government directory.

Home burial and scattering are governed at the Texas level first; our Texas rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Sherman or your HOA adds anything.

The first 48 hours, step by step

  1. If your cat dies at night, you don't need to call anyone until morning. Move your cat to a cool room and cover them with a towel.
  2. Put a towel or pad underneath. It's normal for a cat's bladder or bowels to release after death.
  3. Gently curl your cat into a sleeping position during the first hours, while the body is still soft. They'll fit the basket or box more easily, and they'll look more peaceful when you say goodbye.
  4. In the morning, call your vet or a crematory covering Sherman. Let them know where your cat is now and whether you're able to drive them over.
  5. Ask for the price in writing, and make sure it covers pickup, the type of cremation (private or communal) and whatever the ashes come home in.
  6. Take a paw print, a lock of fur or their collar now, ahead of the pickup, if a keepsake would mean something.
  7. Write down the expected return date for the ashes, and the name of whoever will call when they're ready.

Keeping your cat close

Sherman, the seat of Grayson County, sits along US 75 about 30 miles north of McKinney and roughly 15 miles south of Lake Texoma, with Denison as its close neighbor. Housing runs from tree-lined older neighborhoods near downtown and Austin College to newer subdivisions and rural homes on acreage. If you live outside the city limits, text the provider a pin drop and warn them about any cattle guard or long gravel lane.

Questions people ask

Does the Sherman climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In August, with highs near 93°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.

Is Sherman big enough to have several cat aftercare providers?

Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 8,200 Sherman households keep a cat and around 730 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 52,417), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Sherman?

Usually yes. Denison is about 10 miles away, Anna is about 20 miles away and Celina is about 23 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Will I have to travel to McKinney to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in McKinney (roughly 30 miles from Sherman) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Should my other cats see the cat who died?

Many owners let their other cats sniff and sit with the body for a few minutes before collection, and it does no harm. Some cats show interest, others walk away; both are normal. Afterwards, keep feeding and litter routines steady. If a remaining cat stops eating for more than a day or two, call your vet, as cats don't cope well with going without food.

How quickly does my cat need to be collected in hot weather?

In summer heat, aim for collection the same day, or the next morning if you can keep your cat cool indoors. Keep the air conditioning on and place your cat in a box in the coolest room with two or three wrapped ice packs or frozen bottles alongside, not underneath. A cat's small size makes this easy to manage for a night.
