Manor, Texas
Cat aftercare in Manor: the local picture
Central Texas summers push into the mid-nineties, while the coldest January nights typically bottom out near forty, with occasional hard freezes. In the heat, cool your pet right away in an air-conditioned room with a folded blanket beneath them, and make your calls promptly rather than waiting until evening. In mild winter weather you have a bit longer, but keep them well away from heaters and sunny windows.
Manor sits about a dozen miles east of downtown Austin along US 290, and it has grown fast, with new subdivisions spreading across former farmland. Because so many aftercare providers are based in Austin, home collection is usually available here, though the drive east can be slow at rush hour. Ask for a quote that lists pickup, the kind of cremation and the delivery of ashes as separate lines.
Many vets around Manor run mixed practices, caring for cattle, horses and dogs as well as cats, and in calving or lambing season they can be out on farms for long stretches. They still arrange cat cremation routinely. Call ahead so someone is at the clinic when you arrive, and if your vet is out on a call, ask the front desk to take the details and ring you back.
Manor is home to about 23,070 people, the 136th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Austin, about 12 miles (20 km) away, which is where some providers serving Manor are based.
Manor sits within easy reach of Pflugerville (7 miles, a larger centre), Austin (13 miles, a larger centre) and Round Rock (13 miles, a larger centre). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Manor; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
3,600
Estimated cat-owning households in Manor
How we calculated this
23,070 ÷ 2.5 = 9,228 households; × 39% (cat) = 3,600. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.

How we calculated this
3,600 cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 320 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

The local attitude to cremation
About 55.7%[3] of people in Texas are cremated, a figure that has been rising for years. Pet cremation has followed the same curve. More cat owners now bring the ashes home than bury their cat in the garden, especially in towns and suburbs where yards are small or rented, and where an indoor cat never really used the garden anyway.
The Texas percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Manor, not as a count of pets.
Timing your cat's aftercare in Manor's climate
Long, hot seasons like Manor's bring more outdoor activity for cats and more traffic on warm evenings, and road losses are one of the hardest ways to lose a cat. If a neighbor or passer-by finds your cat, ask them to move your cat off the road onto a towel if they can, and bring a box and a blanket when you go. Your vet can check for a microchip if identity is uncertain, and then help with cremation.
Heat also shapes the goodbye itself. If you're planning a home euthanasia in August, book a morning or evening slot when the house is cooler and your cat is more settled, and ask whether the vet can take your cat for cremation straight afterwards so you don't need to arrange a separate pickup.

Cat cremation prices for Manor families
One pet-care company estimates that over a lifetime a cat costs a US household about $32,170[5], so the cremation is a small line in a long story. Even so, it's the one bill you pay while grieving, which is why it helps to know the numbers first. In Manor, private cremation, collection and a simple container usually add up to a few hundred dollars at most; the table shows the typical pieces.
Here's a number you won't find elsewhere: if every one of the roughly 320 cats lost in Manor each year were privately cremated at the national average of about clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4], local families would spend around $0.1 million a year. That's our estimate, and it's why several providers compete for work here.

Burial, ashes and the rules in Texas
One rule matters more than any other if your cat bit or scratched someone in the last couple of weeks, or died after sudden changes in behavior: tell your vet before anything else. Where rabies occurs, public health rules may require testing, and that has to happen before cremation. In almost every other case, the rules below only come into play once you choose what to do with the ashes or the body.
To find your county or city office in Texas, start with the official Texas local government directory.
The Texas page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Manor's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
A simple checklist for the next two days
- Take a breath. Nothing has to happen in the next hour. If your cat died at home, lay them on a towel, close their eyes if you can and tuck their legs in as if they were sleeping.
- Take anything you want to keep now: snip a little chest fur, or some from inside a hind leg, gather any whiskers that have dropped in their bed, and set the collar or tag aside.
- Place your cat in a box or basket on top of the blanket they slept on, then move it to whichever room stays coolest and shut the door to keep other animals out.
- Call your vet (or an emergency clinic out of hours) and tell them what happened. They can confirm the death if you're unsure and explain their aftercare arrangement.
- Decide on private or communal cremation. This is the choice that shapes everything else, including the price.
- Arrange collection from your home or the clinic, or bring your cat in yourself, and ask for the total in writing.
- Let yourself grieve. Tell the people who knew your cat, and put the bowls away when you're ready, not before.
Ways to remember your cat locally
Many Manor residents are newcomers living in young neighborhoods with small back yards and homeowners' association rules. Those rules may limit what you can place in the yard, which is one reason cremation and indoor keepsakes are a popular fit here. A shelf, a window ledge or a corner of a home office can hold a memorial just as well as a flower bed can.

Questions people ask
Does the Manor climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 96°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Will I have to travel to Austin to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Austin (roughly 12 miles from Manor) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Manor?
Usually yes. Pflugerville is about 7 miles away, Austin is about 13 miles away and Round Rock is about 13 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is Manor big enough to have several cat aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 3,600 Manor households keep a cat and around 320 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 23,070), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
My local vet in Manor is small. Can they still arrange cremation?
Almost certainly. Small practices usually work with a crematory in a larger centre and have a regular collection day, and your cat is kept in a cold room at the clinic until then. Ask which crematory they use, whether private cremation is available, what it costs for a cat and roughly how long the ashes take to come back.
Why did my cat hide before they died?
Hiding is instinct. A cat who feels ill or weak looks for somewhere small, quiet and protected, like under a bed, in a closet or beneath a deck. It doesn't mean your cat was frightened of you or that you missed something obvious; cats are very good at concealing illness until late. Many owners find their cat this way, and it's okay to need help with what comes next.
