Why cremation is familiar in Texas, or isn't
About 55.7%[3] of people in Texas choose cremation, and the share keeps climbing as families move and live further apart. That's one of the most common reasons cat owners choose it too: a small urn travels, a garden grave doesn't. Before you bury, scatter or plan a memorial, it's worth checking what Texas allows. Keeping ashes at home is allowed everywhere we know of. Burying a whole cat and scattering in public places are where rules come in, usually to protect water supplies and shared spaces, and renters normally need the landlord's permission for any garden burial.

What to do first, and what can wait
- If your cat died at the clinic or an emergency hospital, whether on the operating table, in oxygen or on fluids through the night, you can walk out without having decided anything. The team can hold your cat in their cold storage until you've had time to think.
- Ask to see your cat if you missed the moment. Hospitals will usually wrap your cat in a blanket and bring them into a private room, and people often find it helps far more than they thought it would.
- Request a copy of the notes if the death was unexpected. You can ask for a post-mortem, but it has to happen before cremation, so say so now.
- Tell the hospital which crematory you want. An emergency hospital's usual partner may differ from your own vet's, and you can name either or one you found yourself.
- Check that the hospital records private or communal correctly when they fill in the release paperwork, and take away a copy that carries your cat's name.
- Collect your cat's collar, carrier and blanket, or have the staff keep the blanket with your cat for the journey.

Is cremation common in Texas?
