Hooks, Texas
How cat cremation works in Hooks
Hooks is a small Bowie County town a few miles west of Texarkana, close to the Red River Army Depot. Many residents work at the depot or commute into Texarkana, and that is also where most clinics and aftercare services are based. Before you need help, find out whether your preferred provider will come out to Hooks, or whether you will be driving your pet in to them.
Houses around Hooks tend to sit on roomy lots with pines and oaks along the fence, so a backyard resting place is a natural thought. Depot and military households, though, often relocate after a few years, and renters may not have the choice. Keeping the ashes indoors in a sealed urn means your companion can move with you to the next posting or the next house.
Home burial is common in smaller communities, and for a cat it's physically easy: a small grave in a garden you own. It's worth thinking about whether you'll stay in the property and whether foxes, coyotes or dogs are likely to dig; a cat's grave needs to be deep enough to discourage them. Some families choose cremation and bury the ashes instead, which avoids the problem and keeps the option of moving them later.
Hooks is home to about 2,490 people, the 282nd-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover.
If you want to compare providers, look at Redwater (8 miles), New Boston (8 miles) and Nash (8 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
Our estimate
390
Hooks: cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
2,490 ÷ 2.5 = 996 households; × 39% (cat) = 390. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
30
cat deaths per year in Hooks, our estimate
How we calculated this
390 cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 30 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[2]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.
55.7%[3]
The NFDA projected Texas's cremation rate at 55.7% for 2024.
clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4]
CareCredit's 2025 study put US cat euthanasia at $158 in clinic and $359 at home, cat cremation at $180 and cat cemetery burial at $566.
The published sources behind those figures are CareCredit (Synchrony) and American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry.

Why cremation is familiar in Texas, or isn't
About 55.7%[3] of people in Texas are cremated, a figure that has been rising for years. Pet cremation has followed the same curve. More cat owners now bring the ashes home than bury their cat in the garden, especially in towns and suburbs where yards are small or rented, and where an indoor cat never really used the garden anyway.

Seasons, collection and burial in Hooks
Hooks summers are hot: August averages highs around 94°F. Heat shortens the time you have after a cat dies at home, so move your cat to the coolest room, lay them on a towel in a box or basket and keep the air conditioning running. A small body is easy to keep cool with two or three wrapped ice packs alongside it, not underneath. Ask for same-day or next-morning collection.
Don't leave your cat in a car or on a porch in Hooks's summer heat, even for a short while. If you're driving your cat to the vet or crematory yourself, cool the car first, put your cat in a carrier or lined box on the floor behind a seat, out of the sun, and go straight there. Most clinics will meet you at the door if you call ahead.

How much to budget for your cat
By our estimate, ~4.7 million[5] pet cats die in the US each year, so every provider serving Hooks prices cat cremation as routine work. The cremation itself is rarely the big number; add-ons are. Our cost calculator lets you add collection, an urn and a paw print to see a likely total, and the memorial budget planner helps if you'd like to spread spending on keepsakes over time.
Put another way: around 30 cats die in Hooks each year (our estimate), and private cremation averages clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4] nationally. That adds up to roughly $0 million a year locally, which is why prices and packages differ so much from one provider to the next.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Texas: Texas costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Burial, ashes and the rules in Texas
Pet crematories are lightly regulated in many places, so it's up to you to ask how they identify each animal and what private really means. The rules in Texas mostly cover what happens next: where a cat can be buried and where ashes can be scattered. The notes below cover the main points; your vet or local council can confirm anything specific to your address.

For Texas's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Texas guide. Local rules in Hooks can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
A simple checklist for the next two days
- Take a breath. The next hour asks nothing of you. When a cat dies at home, set them down on a towel, gently close the eyes if they'll stay shut, and fold the legs under as though they're curled up asleep.
- Take anything you want to keep now: snip a little chest fur, or some from inside a hind leg, gather any whiskers that have dropped in their bed, and set the collar or tag aside.
- Place your cat in a box or basket on top of the blanket they slept on, then move it to whichever room stays coolest and shut the door to keep other animals out.
- Call your vet (after hours, an emergency clinic will do) and describe what has happened. If you have any doubt, they can confirm your cat has died, and they'll tell you how their aftercare works.
- Decide on private or communal cremation. This is the choice that shapes everything else, including the price.
- Arrange collection either from the house or the vet's, or take your cat to the provider yourself, and get the full cost written down.
- Let yourself grieve. Tell the people who knew your cat, and put the bowls away when you're ready, not before.
Memorials and keepsakes for your cat
August in Hooks averages highs in the mid-90s, with humidity that makes an unconditioned back room warm by midday. If your animal dies during the summer, place the body in the coolest spot you have, covered with a pillowcase or soft towel, and call for aftercare that day. January nights near freezing buy you somewhat more time, but only by hours.

Questions people ask
How does Hooks's weather affect cat aftercare?
August is the hottest month in Hooks, with average highs around 94°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Winters are mild, with average lows staying above freezing, so outdoor burial or scattering is usually possible year round.
How do Texas attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Texas human cremation rate at about 55.7%[3]. We show it on the Hooks page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Hooks?
The closest communities we cover are Redwater (about 8 miles), New Boston (about 8 miles) and Nash (about 8 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Hooks too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How many cat owners live in Hooks?
By our estimate, about 390 households in Hooks have at least one cat, and around 30 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 2,490, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Can I bury my cat in the garden in Texas?
In many places you can, with conditions such as depth, distance from water and owning the property. Rules vary within Texas, so check with your city or council before digging. Dig deep enough to keep foxes, coyotes and dogs away. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your cat with you and bury the ashes later if you wish.
Can I cremate a stray or community cat I've been feeding?
Yes. You don't need to be the registered owner to arrange cremation for a cat you cared for. Ask your vet to scan for a microchip first, in case someone else is looking for them. Local rescues and trap-neuter-return groups around Hooks often know a provider with low-cost communal cremation, and a private cremation is possible if you'd like the ashes back.
