When your cat dies in Pataskala: what happens next

Pataskala, Ohio

Who handles cat aftercare in Pataskala

Central Ohio summers are muggy, around 85°F by day in July with warm nights, so keep your pet indoors on tile or concrete while you phone around. Winter lows hover near 22°F, and snow seldom closes State Route 16, although township roads north of town can drift badly. Arranging pickup that same day, or early the next morning, is sensible in any month.

Pataskala has grown quickly, and plenty of newcomers haven't found a regular vet yet. If that describes you, a Columbus-area emergency hospital can receive your pet and handle cremation paperwork, or you can go straight to an aftercare provider. Either way, check that the price includes a private cremation, a basic urn and the drive back out to Licking County, since those often appear as separate lines.

Barn cats and farm cats are part of life around Pataskala, and many families care for several at once. When one dies, a quiet burial on the land is the usual choice, and a perfectly good one. If a particular cat was closer to you than the others, though, a private cremation lets you keep them, and communal cremation through your vet is an affordable option for cats you fed but never handled.

About 18,529 people live in Pataskala, which makes it the 96th-largest of the 106 Ohio communities we cover. Columbus, roughly 16 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Pataskala run from there.

The closest communities we cover are Reynoldsburg (5 miles, a larger centre), Gahanna (9 miles) and Whitehall (9 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Pataskala too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

Our estimate

2,900

Estimated cat-owning households in Pataskala

How we calculated this

18,529 ÷ 2.5 = 7,412 households; × 39% (cat) = 2,900. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.

Our estimate

260

cat deaths per year in Pataskala, our estimate

How we calculated this

2,900 cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 260 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

39%[1]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[2]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

59.1%[3]

The NFDA projected Ohio's cremation rate at 59.1% for 2024.

clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4]

CareCredit's 2025 study put US cat euthanasia at $158 in clinic and $359 at home, cat cremation at $180 and cat cemetery burial at $566.

Cremation in Ohio, and what it means for cat owners

In a place like Ohio, with a human cremation rate near 59.1%[3] and burial still common, pet cemeteries often sit alongside crematories. Some let you bury a cat's ashes in a small plot or niche rather than a full grave, which costs far less and gives you somewhere to visit. Ask local providers whether they offer this if a grave matters to you but a garden burial doesn't suit.

The Ohio figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

Weather, timing and your cat in Pataskala

Cold weather brings its own risks for outdoor cats. They look for warmth under car hoods and in engine bays, so a quick knock on the hood before starting the car is a common habit in places like Pataskala. Antifreeze is another winter danger: it tastes sweet to cats and is highly toxic. If an outdoor cat dies suddenly in January, February, March and December, tell your vet what you know; they may want to check the cause.

If you're driving your cat to the vet or crematory yourself in winter, the cold car helps. Lay your cat in a lined box or carrier on the back seat and drive carefully. In January, when lows average about 22°F, check the roads before you set off, and don't feel you have to go that day if conditions are poor. Your cat will keep safely in the cold.

How much to budget for your cat

By our estimate, ~4.7 million[5] pet cats die in the US each year, so every provider serving Pataskala prices cat cremation as routine work. The cremation itself is rarely the big number; add-ons are. Our cost calculator lets you add collection, an urn and a paw print to see a likely total, and the memorial budget planner helps if you'd like to spread spending on keepsakes over time.

Here's a number you won't find elsewhere: if every one of the roughly 260 cats lost in Pataskala each year were privately cremated at the national average of about clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4], local families would spend around $0 million a year. That's our estimate, and it's why several providers compete for work here.

What Ohio allows: burial, scattering and more

If your cat was put to sleep, the drug used stays in the body after death and can poison a dog, fox or bird of prey that digs up a grave. That's why many authorities discourage burying euthanized pets anywhere animals can reach them, and why cremation is simpler for most families. The notes below show what Ohio says about burial and scattering.

The official Ohio local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Pataskala.

The rules that apply across Ohio (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Ohio page. Pataskala may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.

A simple checklist for the next two days

  1. If your cat dies at night, you don't need to call anyone until morning. Move your cat to a cool room and cover them with a towel.
  2. Put a towel or pad underneath. After death the bladder and bowels often empty, which is ordinary.
  3. Gently curl your cat into a sleeping position within the first few hours, before the body stiffens. It makes the box or basket easier and the goodbye gentler.
  4. In the morning, call your vet or a crematory covering Pataskala. Let them know where your cat is now and whether you're able to drive them over.
  5. Ask for the price in writing, and make sure it covers pickup, the type of cremation (private or communal) and whatever the ashes come home in.
  6. Take a paw print, a lock of fur or their collar now, ahead of the pickup, if a keepsake would mean something.
  7. Write down the expected return date for the ashes and who will contact you when they're ready.

Keeping your cat's memory close in Pataskala

Pataskala covers a big stretch of western Licking County, some 16 miles east of the Columbus skyline, where fresh subdivisions sit beside farmhouses on an acre or two of former cropland. That split matters. One family has a pole barn and open space, the next a small lot and an HOA. Providers based across Columbus's eastern suburbs reach Pataskala routinely, so a collection from your door is rarely hard to arrange.

Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Pataskala?

Usually yes. Reynoldsburg is about 5 miles away, Gahanna is about 9 miles away and Whitehall is about 9 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Will I have to travel to Columbus to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Columbus (roughly 16 miles from Pataskala) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Does the Pataskala climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 85°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.

Why does the Pataskala page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 59.1%[3] of Ohio residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

What's the difference between private and communal cremation for a cat?

In a private cremation your cat is cremated alone and every bit of ash returned is theirs. In a communal cremation several animals are cremated together and no ashes come back; they're usually scattered in a memorial garden. Some providers also offer partitioned cremation, where pets share the chamber with dividers. Private typically costs about 2.0x[7] the communal price.

My local vet in Pataskala is small. Can they still arrange cremation?

Almost certainly. Small practices usually work with a crematory in a larger centre and have a regular collection day, and your cat is kept in a cold room at the clinic until then. Ask which crematory they use, whether private cremation is available, what it costs for a cat and roughly how long the ashes take to come back.
