Arranging your cat's cremation in Alliance

Alliance, Ohio

How cat cremation works in Alliance

The Mahoning River runs through Alliance on its way east, and reservoirs nearby draw residents out on summer weekends. Some families would like an animal remembered near water like that. Before scattering on public shoreline, ask whoever manages it; plenty of Alliance households choose a flower bed at home instead, often with a red carnation planted in their pet's honor.

Alliance is a small city in eastern Stark County, nicknamed the Carnation City and the seat of the University of Mount Union, with frame houses on older blocks around downtown and farmland beyond. Canton lies about 15 miles west and Cleveland roughly 50 miles north. Providers may drive in from Canton, Akron or Youngstown, so include landmarks along with your street address.

If your cat is old or ill and you live in or near Alliance, a phone call now is easier than one later. Ask your vet which crematory they use, what private cremation costs for a cat, how long the ashes take to come back and whether a home visit is possible. Senior cats often decline quietly, with weight loss and more sleep, so having those answers written down lets you spend the last days with your cat rather than on the phone.

Alliance is home to about 21,582 people, the 78th-largest of the 106 Ohio communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Cleveland, about 50 miles (81 km) away, which is where some providers serving Alliance are based.

Our pages for North Canton (15 miles), Canton (16 miles, a larger centre) and Green (19 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Alliance as well.

Our estimate

3,350

How many cat-owning households Alliance has (estimate)

How we calculated this

21,582 ÷ 2.5 = 8,633 households; × 39% (cat) = 3,350. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.

Our estimate

300

Estimated cat losses in Alliance each year

How we calculated this

3,350 cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 300 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

39%[1]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[2]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

59.1%[3]

The NFDA projected Ohio's cremation rate at 59.1% for 2024.

clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4]

CareCredit's 2025 study put US cat euthanasia at $158 in clinic and $359 at home, cat cremation at $180 and cat cemetery burial at $566.

We built the this numbers from CareCredit (Synchrony) and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

A cat at home in Alliance

Why cremation is familiar in Ohio, or isn't

About 59.1%[3] of people in Ohio are cremated, a figure that has been rising for years. Pet cremation has followed the same curve. More cat owners now bring the ashes home than bury their cat in the garden, especially in towns and suburbs where yards are small or rented, and where an indoor cat never really used the garden anyway.

The Ohio percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Alliance, not as a count of pets.

Weather, timing and your cat in Alliance

If your cat died outdoors during Alliance's cold spell and wasn't found for a while, they may be stiff or frozen. Don't try to warm or straighten them. Lay them on a blanket in a box, keep them in a cold garage or porch, and tell the vet or crematory what happened. They see this every winter and will know what to do, and you can still choose private cremation with the ashes returned.

Cold weather brings its own risks for outdoor cats. They look for warmth under car hoods and in engine bays, so a quick knock on the hood before starting the car is a common habit in places like Alliance. Antifreeze is another winter danger: it tastes sweet to cats and is highly toxic. If an outdoor cat dies suddenly in January, February, March and December, tell your vet what you know; they may want to check the cause.

Seasonal scene for planning aftercare in Alliance

What you'll likely pay, and what adds to it

By our estimate, ~4.7 million[5] pet cats die in the US each year, so every provider serving Alliance prices cat cremation as routine work. The cremation itself is rarely the big number; add-ons are. Our cost calculator lets you add collection, an urn and a paw print to see a likely total, and the memorial budget planner helps if you'd like to spread spending on keepsakes over time.

By our estimate Alliance families would spend around $0.1 million a year if every one of the roughly 300 cats lost here were privately cremated at clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4], the national average. Competition for that work is real, so quotes differ.

Burial and scattering rules for Ohio

Rules about pets after death are set locally, so it's worth knowing the basics for Ohio before you decide. Cremation itself is straightforward everywhere; burial and scattering are where local rules come in, and for a cat, burial is the one people most often ask about.

Ohio keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Alliance.

For Ohio's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Ohio guide. Local rules in Alliance can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.

What to do first, and what can wait

  1. Take a breath. Nothing has to happen in the next hour. If your cat died at home, lay them on a towel, close their eyes if you can and tuck their legs in as if they were sleeping.
  2. Take anything you want to keep now: snip a little chest fur, or some from inside a hind leg, gather any whiskers that have dropped in their bed, and set the collar or tag aside.
  3. Place your cat in a box or basket on top of the blanket they slept on, then move it to whichever room stays coolest and shut the door to keep other animals out.
  4. Call your vet (after hours, an emergency clinic will do) and describe what has happened. If you have any doubt, they can confirm your cat has died, and they'll tell you how their aftercare works.
  5. Decide on private or communal cremation. This is the choice that shapes everything else, including the price.
  6. Arrange collection either from the house or the vet's, or take your cat to the provider yourself, and get the full cost written down.
  7. Let yourself grieve. Tell the people who knew your cat, and put the bowls away when you're ready, not before.

Keeping your cat close

Northeast Ohio winters reach Alliance too, January nights averaging 20F and cold hanging on into March. Across that stretch an enclosed porch or unheated garage will hold your companion safely for several hours. Summer afternoons climb to the mid 80s, humid and close, which means the kitchen counter is no place to wait; move your companion somewhere cold and phone the same day.

Questions people ask

Will I have to travel to Cleveland to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Cleveland (roughly 50 miles from Alliance) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Alliance?

Usually yes. North Canton is about 15 miles away, Canton is about 16 miles away and Green is about 19 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Is Alliance big enough to have several cat aftercare providers?

Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 3,350 Alliance households keep a cat and around 300 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 21,582), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.

How does Alliance's weather affect cat aftercare?

July is the hottest month in Alliance, with average highs around 84°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, March and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.

Are there enough pet crematories to serve Alliance?

By our estimate, around 300 cats die in Alliance each year, from roughly 3,350 cat-owning households. Not every family chooses cremation, but demand on that scale supports several options in most regions. The number of providers physically in Alliance matters less than how many collect from your address or your vet, and how quickly they return the ashes.

Can I bury my cat's ashes in winter when the ground is frozen?

Many families in cold places keep the urn at home through winter and bury the ashes in spring, once the ground thaws. Ashes don't need to be buried quickly. A cat's urn needs only a small hole, so almost any spot you love, under a shrub or beside a garden path, will work when the weather turns.
