Plenty of Taos homes are adobe or sit on large rural lots in places like Arroyo Seco or El Prado, and families often picture a pet's resting place with a mountain view. Rocky, sometimes frozen ground makes scattering ashes or setting a stone easier than digging for much of the year. Some owners wait for spring before choosing a spot, which is perfectly reasonable.
Winters in Taos are cold and snowy, and spring can bring late storms that close mountain roads for a day. High cremation rates, about 70.5%[3] for people in New Mexico, often go hand in hand with pet crematories with viewing rooms and set farewell times. Many will let you stay while your cat is placed in the chamber, or wait on site and take the ashes home the same day. It costs a little more and needs booking, but for some owners, seeing it through is what lets them rest.

Step by step in Taos
- If your cat died while you were away, with a sitter, a neighbor or at a boarding cattery, phone the person who was caring for them first. Ask what happened and where your cat is right now.
- Ask them to keep your cat cool: covered with a towel in a lidded box in the coolest part of the house, or taken to the nearest vet if the house will be warm.
- Give your vet permission by phone or email so they can keep your cat until you're back. With a call in advance, most practices around Taos will take a cat brought in by a sitter.

Why did my cat hide before they died?
Hiding is instinct. A cat who feels ill or weak looks for somewhere small, quiet and protected, like under a bed, in a closet or beneath a deck. It doesn't mean your cat was frightened of you or that you missed something obvious; cats are very good at concealing illness until late. Many owners find their cat this way, and it's okay to need help with what comes next.

Should I choose cremation or burial for my cat?
Surveys in the US and UK point the same way: roughly two-thirds of bereaved owners choose cremation and about 30% choose burial[11]. A cat's small size makes a garden burial easy where it's allowed, but cremation is simpler if you rent, might move or want your cat close. You can combine them by burying the ashes.
