Belgrade, Montana
Cat aftercare in Belgrade: the local picture
Belgrade's open setting gives wide views of the Bridger and Gallatin ranges across the fields. Many families keep a memorial right at home: a flat stone in a young lawn, a chokecherry planted along the fence line, an urn on the mantel. If you'd rather scatter ashes up in the mountains on public land, check with the managing agency before you go.
Belgrade winters are cold, with December lows near 10F and frost that can arrive in October and hang on through April. With frozen soil for so many months, digging in a new-build backyard is rarely practical, and cremation tends to come first. July afternoons reach the mid-80s; on a day like that, set your pet's body on a towel in a shaded, air-conditioned room.
Many vets around Belgrade run mixed practices, caring for cattle, horses and dogs as well as cats, and in calving or lambing season they can be out on farms for long stretches. They still arrange cat cremation routinely. Call ahead so someone is at the clinic when you arrive, and if your vet is out on a call, ask the front desk to take the details and ring you back.
Belgrade is home to about 13,107 people, the 8th-largest of the 10 Montana communities we cover.
Our pages for Bozeman (10 miles, a larger centre), Helena (69 miles, a larger centre) and Butte-Silver Bow (72 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Belgrade as well.
Our estimate
2,050
How many cat-owning households Belgrade has (estimate)
How we calculated this
13,107 ÷ 2.5 = 5,243 households; × 39% (cat) = 2,050. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
180
Estimated cat losses in Belgrade each year
How we calculated this
2,050 cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 180 a year. Treat it as a minimum.
39%[1]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[2]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.
73.4%[3]
Montana had a 73.4% cremation rate in 2024, among the highest in the US.
clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4]
CareCredit's 2025 study put US cat euthanasia at $158 in clinic and $359 at home, cat cremation at $180 and cat cemetery burial at $566.

Cremation in Montana, and what it means for cat owners
High cremation rates, about 73.4%[3] for people in Montana, often go hand in hand with pet crematories with viewing rooms and set farewell times. Many will let you stay while your cat is placed in the chamber, or wait on site and take the ashes home the same day. It costs a little more and needs booking, but for some owners, seeing it through is what lets them rest.
Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024) is where the Montana figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Belgrade tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Belgrade weather and timing
If your cat died outdoors during Belgrade's cold spell and wasn't found for a while, they may be stiff or frozen. Don't try to warm or straighten them. Lay them on a blanket in a box, keep them in a cold garage or porch, and tell the vet or crematory what happened. They see this every winter and will know what to do, and you can still choose private cremation with the ashes returned.
Some families in cold places cremate first and bury the ashes once the ground thaws. It's a lovely compromise for a cat: the small urn comes home now, and in spring you plant it under a shrub, a patch of catnip or the tree your cat used to watch the birds from.

What you'll likely pay, and what adds to it
Expect the total to depend on four things: private or communal, how your cat is collected, what the ashes come back in and whether you add a keepsake. The weight of a cat barely moves the price. The ranges below are typical US figures; ask any Belgrade provider for a written total before you agree.
A back-of-envelope figure for Belgrade: about 180 cats lost each year, times the national private average of clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4], comes to roughly $0 million. Our estimate, and a reason prices vary from provider to provider.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Montana: Montana costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Burial, ashes and the rules in Montana
One rule matters more than any other if your cat bit or scratched someone in the last couple of weeks, or died after sudden changes in behavior: tell your vet before anything else. Where rabies occurs, public health rules may require testing, and that has to happen before cremation. In almost every other case, the rules below only come into play once you choose what to do with the ashes or the body.
The official Montana local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Belgrade.
The Montana page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Belgrade's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
A simple checklist for the next two days
- If it's a child's cat, use plain, honest words: the cat has died and isn't coming home. Steer clear of "put to sleep" around little ones, who may then be scared to go to bed.
- Let the child say goodbye in whatever way they choose, whether that's a last stroke, a picture slipped into the box or picking which blanket goes with the cat.
- Offer a small job: choosing a photograph, printing the name that will go on the urn, looking after the collar. Having a task makes the loss easier for a child to carry.
- Phone the clinic or a Belgrade pet crematory after the goodbye, and go for private cremation if your child is likely to want the ashes home.
- Warn school or daycare about what's happened at home, so the staff understand if your child seems withdrawn or tearful.
- Plan a small ceremony for when the ashes return: a few quiet minutes at a window or out in the garden is enough. There are more suggestions, age by age, in our guide for families.
Keeping your cat close
Belgrade is Gallatin County's second town, about 10 miles west of Bozeman on the flat valley floor, and it's where the region's main airport sits. Much of its growth has come as new subdivisions of single-family homes on former grain and hay fields. Providers based in the valley often cover both towns, so ask whether they'll collect from your house, whether a fee applies, and when to expect the ashes.

Questions people ask
Roughly how many cats die in Belgrade each year?
Our estimate is around 180. It comes from Belgrade's population (about 13,107), the average household size, the share of homes with a cat (about 2,050 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Belgrade?
Usually yes. Bozeman is about 10 miles away, Helena is about 69 miles away and Butte-Silver Bow is about 72 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in Montana?
For people, yes: about 73.4%[3] of Montana deaths end in cremation, according to Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Belgrade follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Does the Belgrade climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 85°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, April, October, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Is losing a cat common in Belgrade, or am I overreacting?
You're not overreacting, and you're far from alone. By our estimate, about 180 Belgrade families lose a cat each year, out of roughly 2,050 households with one. In one UK survey, 66.9%[6] of bereaved owners were surprised by how intense their grief was. Taking a day off, talking to friends or calling a pet-loss line are all reasonable.
Why did my cat hide before they died?
Hiding is instinct. A cat who feels ill or weak looks for somewhere small, quiet and protected, like under a bed, in a closet or beneath a deck. It doesn't mean your cat was frightened of you or that you missed something obvious; cats are very good at concealing illness until late. Many owners find their cat this way, and it's okay to need help with what comes next.
