Saying goodbye to your cat in Romulus

Romulus, Michigan

Cat aftercare in Romulus: the local picture

Romulus has more open space than most Detroit suburbs, and some families have deep lots where a garden stone or a young tree can mark a pet's memory; check city rules first if you're thinking of burial at home. Others prefer an urn indoors, especially if the house might be sold. A photo and a paw print framed together make a simple memorial that goes wherever you do.

Romulus is home to most of Detroit Metropolitan Airport, and the rest of this large, spread-out Wayne County city mixes older neighborhoods, newer subdivisions, warehouses along I-94 and I-275, and pockets of open land. Because homes can be a fair distance apart, ask providers whether Romulus is inside their standard pickup area or whether a travel fee applies. Give your cross streets when you call, since the city covers a lot of ground.

Barn cats and farm cats are part of life around Romulus, and many families care for several at once. When one dies, a quiet burial on the land is the usual choice, and a perfectly good one. If a particular cat was closer to you than the others, though, a private cremation lets you keep them, and communal cremation through your vet is an affordable option for cats you fed but never handled.

With roughly 24,547 residents, Romulus is the 48th-largest of the 63 Michigan communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Romulus are based about 18 miles away in Detroit, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.

For a second opinion on price, Taylor (5 miles, a larger centre), Inkster (5 miles) and Westland (7 miles, a larger centre) are close enough that their providers cover Romulus routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

Our estimate

3,850

How many cat-owning households Romulus has (estimate)

How we calculated this

24,547 ÷ 2.5 = 9,819 households; × 39% (cat) = 3,850. A household with several pets counts once.

Our estimate

340

Romulus families who lose a cat each year (estimate)

How we calculated this

3,850 cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 340 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

39%[1]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[2]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

69.5%[3]

The NFDA projected Michigan's cremation rate at 69.5% for 2024.

clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4]

CareCredit's 2025 study put US cat euthanasia at $158 in clinic and $359 at home, cat cremation at $180 and cat cemetery burial at $566.

We built the this numbers from Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science and CareCredit (Synchrony), and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Why cremation is familiar in Michigan, or isn't

About 69.5%[3] of people in Michigan are cremated, a figure that has been rising for years. Pet cremation has followed the same curve. More cat owners now bring the ashes home than bury their cat in the garden, especially in towns and suburbs where yards are small or rented, and where an indoor cat never really used the garden anyway.

For the Michigan figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Romulus rather than as pet data.

Timing your cat's aftercare in Romulus's climate

If your cat died outdoors during Romulus's cold spell and wasn't found for a while, they may be stiff or frozen. Don't try to warm or straighten them. Lay them on a blanket in a box, keep them in a cold garage or porch, and tell the vet or crematory what happened. They see this every winter and will know what to do, and you can still choose private cremation with the ashes returned.

Some families in cold places cremate first and bury the ashes once the ground thaws. It's a lovely compromise for a cat: the small urn comes home now, and in spring you plant it under a shrub, a patch of catnip or the tree your cat used to watch the birds from.

Cat cremation prices for Romulus families

Standard pet insurance usually doesn't cover cremation, though it may cover euthanasia when it's medically necessary[5]. Some policies sell end-of-life add-ons: one paid up to $250 toward cremation and burial[6], which would cover a typical private cat cremation. For comparison, a pet cemetery burial for a cat averages about $566[4], roughly three times the cost of cremation.

Put another way: around 340 cats die in Romulus each year (our estimate), and private cremation averages clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4] nationally. That adds up to roughly $0.1 million a year locally, which is why prices and packages differ so much from one provider to the next.

Local rules in Michigan

Rules about pets after death are set locally, so it's worth knowing the basics for Michigan before you decide. Cremation itself is straightforward everywhere; burial and scattering are where local rules come in, and for a cat, burial is the one people most often ask about.

Michigan keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Romulus.

For Michigan's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Michigan guide. Local rules in Romulus can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.

A simple checklist for the next two days

  1. If your cat died at the clinic or an emergency hospital, during surgery, in an oxygen cage or overnight on a drip, nothing needs deciding before you leave. Ask the team to keep your cat in their cold room while you think.
  2. Ask to see your cat if you weren't there. Most hospitals will bring your cat to a quiet room wrapped in a blanket, and many owners say it helped more than they expected.
  3. Request a copy of the notes if the death was unexpected. You can ask for a post-mortem, but it has to happen before cremation, so say so now.
  4. Tell the hospital which crematory you want. The provider an emergency hospital normally uses isn't necessarily your regular vet's, and you can pick either, or one you found on your own.
  5. Check that the hospital records private or communal correctly on the release form, and ask for a copy with your cat's name on it.
  6. Collect your cat's collar, carrier and blanket, or have the staff keep the blanket with your cat for the journey.

Keeping your cat's memory close in Romulus

July in Romulus climbs into the mid-80s, and January lows hover around 19F. Where a home has a detached garage or shed, it stays cold enough in winter to keep a pet's body overnight. In summer heat, choose the coolest indoor floor instead, lay a thin sheet over the body, and set frozen packs wrapped in cloth beside it until collection. Calling early keeps every cremation option open.

Questions people ask

Where are the providers that serve Romulus actually based?

Some are local, and some run from Detroit, about 18 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Romulus and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Romulus?

Usually yes. Taylor is about 5 miles away, Inkster is about 5 miles away and Westland is about 7 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

How do Michigan attitudes to cremation compare?

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Michigan human cremation rate at about 69.5%[3]. We show it on the Romulus page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

How many cat owners live in Romulus?

By our estimate, about 3,850 households in Romulus have at least one cat, and around 340 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 24,547, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.

Can I keep my cat's whiskers and fur before cremation?

Yes, and it's easiest before collection. Clip a small lock of fur from somewhere hidden, like the chest or behind a back leg, and keep it in an envelope or small bag. Shed whiskers turn up in beds and on windowsills for weeks, and a glass vial keeps them safe. Many providers can also take a fur clipping or paw print for you if you ask on the first call.

Should I choose cremation or burial for my cat?

Surveys in the US and UK point the same way: roughly two-thirds of bereaved owners choose cremation and about 30% choose burial[8]. A cat's small size makes a garden burial easy where it's allowed, but cremation is simpler if you rent, might move or want your cat close. You can combine them by burying the ashes.
