Cat cremation in Ames: how it usually works
Ames runs colder than Des Moines, 30 miles south, with January lows averaging around 9 degrees and soil locked hard for five months of the year. July highs sit in the mid-80s. Because many residents live in apartments without garages, the coolest option in hot weather is often to move quickly: wrap your pet in a blanket, set it on the floor of whichever room stays coolest and request collection that day.
Ada Hayden Heritage Park on the north side and the green spaces along Ioway Creek and the Skunk River are places Ames residents know well. Scattering in city parks needs permission, so ask first. Students with a few semesters left in town tend to pick something small enough to pack, while longtime families may scatter or bury ashes in their own gardens.
If the crematory serving Ames only collects from your vet once a week, you may need to keep your cat at home for a few days. Wrapped in a towel, then sealed in a strong plastic bag, a cat keeps well in a chest freezer, and your vet may offer theirs. It sounds hard, but it's common practice in rural areas and doesn't affect cremation or any keepsakes you'd like.
Ames's population is around 68,220, the 8th-largest of the 27 Iowa communities we cover. Des Moines, roughly 30 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Ames run from there.
Families in Ames often end up using a provider from Ankeny (20 miles), Johnston (24 miles) and Altoona (27 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
Our estimate
10,500
How many cat-owning households Ames has (estimate)
How we calculated this
68,220 ÷ 2.5 = 27,288 households; × 39% (cat) = 10,500. A household with several pets counts once.

How we calculated this
10,500 cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 950 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Why cremation is familiar in Iowa, or isn't
Cremation is chosen for about 63.6%[3] of people in Iowa, but plenty of households here have always buried their cats under a favorite tree. Both are loving choices. We'd only suggest choosing on purpose rather than by default: find out what each option costs and involves, then decide what fits your cat, your home and your plans.
We take the Iowa rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Ames, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
What the seasons mean for cat owners in Ames
With average lows at or below freezing for about 5 months a year, Ames has a long stretch when the ground is too hard to dig, and frost can heave a shallow grave. A cat's grave needs to be deep enough to keep foxes and other animals away, which is hard work in frozen soil. Cremating now and burying the ashes later means a much smaller hole, almost anywhere you like, once the ground softens.
If you're driving your cat to the vet or crematory yourself in winter, the cold car helps. Lay your cat in a lined box or carrier on the back seat and drive carefully. In January, when lows average about 9°F, check the roads before you set off, and don't feel you have to go that day if conditions are poor. Your cat will keep safely in the cold.

Cat cremation costs around Ames
Standard pet insurance usually doesn't cover cremation, though it may cover euthanasia when it's medically necessary[5]. Some policies sell end-of-life add-ons: one paid up to $250 toward cremation and burial[6], which would cover a typical private cat cremation. For comparison, a pet cemetery burial for a cat averages about $566[4], roughly three times the cost of cremation.
Here's a number you won't find elsewhere: if every one of the roughly 950 cats lost in Ames each year were privately cremated at the national average of about clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4], local families would spend around $0.2 million a year. That's our estimate, and it's why several providers compete for work here.

Burial and scattering rules for Iowa
One rule matters more than any other if your cat bit or scratched someone in the last couple of weeks, or died after sudden changes in behavior: tell your vet before anything else. Where rabies occurs, public health rules may require testing, and that has to happen before cremation. In almost every other case, the rules below only come into play once you choose what to do with the ashes or the body.
Iowa keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Ames.
The Iowa page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Ames's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
What to do first, and what can wait
- If the death was expected, you and your vet probably agreed arrangements earlier. Phone and check they still stand.
- If it was sudden, whether an illness, a fall or a road accident, ring your vet or the nearest emergency clinic in or near Ames. They'll guide you through the next hour.
- Keep your cat cool and indoors, wrapped in a towel inside a lidded box, especially in warm weather.
- Gather a few things to send with your cat, like a favorite blanket, a toy mouse or a note from the children.
- Ask the provider three questions: will my cat be cremated alone, how do you track which cat is which, and when do I get the ashes?
- Confirm the price in writing before collection, including pickup and the container.
Remembering your cat, in Ames and beyond
Ames is home to Iowa State University, whose College of Veterinary Medicine is the state's only veterinary school, so the town has a teaching animal hospital close at hand. Many residents are students or staff in apartments near campus and Campustown, while families live in quieter neighborhoods to the north and west. If you rent, pickup from the clinic may be simpler than from a third-floor apartment.

Questions people ask
Is Ames big enough to have several cat aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 10,500 Ames households keep a cat and around 950 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 68,220), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Where are the providers that serve Ames actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Des Moines, about 30 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Ames and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Ames?
Usually yes. Ankeny is about 20 miles away, Johnston is about 24 miles away and Altoona is about 27 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Does the Ames climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 84°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
How long until I get my cat's ashes back in Ames?
Many families get their cat's ashes back within about one to two weeks, and 5 to 10 days is commonly quoted in the US[8]. In a large city it can be quicker; where the cremation happens in a larger centre like Des Moines, it may take a little longer. Ask for an expected return date when you book.
Could antifreeze or a car engine have caused my outdoor cat's death?
It's possible in winter. Antifreeze tastes sweet to cats and is highly toxic, and cats sometimes shelter in engine bays for warmth. If an outdoor cat dies suddenly in cold weather, tell your vet what you know before cremation; they can advise whether an examination is worthwhile. Warning neighbors about spills can protect other cats.
