Who handles cat aftercare in Ankeny
The High Trestle Trail begins in Ankeny, and many local families bike or stroll it along with the city's neighborhood parks. Places like these often come to mind when people think about where to remember an animal, but scattering on public trails and parkland needs permission, so ask the city or county first. Plenty of Ankeny owners keep ashes close instead, in an urn by the back door or under a new shrub in the yard.
Central Iowa weather swings hard. July highs reach the mid-80s with thick humidity, and January nights average about 14 degrees, with the ground frozen from November through March. In summer, a basement floor is usually the coolest spot for a pet's body, wrapped in a towel with ice packs nearby. Winter makes the garage a natural choice, provided curious household animals can't get in.
Many vets around Ankeny run mixed practices, caring for cattle, horses and dogs as well as cats, and in calving or lambing season they can be out on farms for long stretches. They still arrange cat cremation routinely. Call ahead so someone is at the clinic when you arrive, and if your vet is out on a call, ask the front desk to take the details and ring you back.
Ankeny is home to about 77,833 people, the 5th-largest of the 27 Iowa communities we cover. Des Moines, roughly 10 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Ankeny run from there.
Our pages for Johnston (7 miles), Altoona (8 miles) and Des Moines (10 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Ankeny as well.

Ankeny: cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
77,833 ÷ 2.5 = 31,133 households; × 39% (cat) = 12,000. A household with several pets counts once.

CareCredit's 2025 study put US cat euthanasia at $158 in clinic and $359 at home, cat cremation at $180 and cat cemetery burial at $566.
We built the this numbers from CareCredit (Synchrony) and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

The local attitude to cremation
In Iowa, about 63.6%[3] of people are cremated, so both traditions are familiar. Among cat owners, the split often follows the house: families with land and outdoor cats tend to bury, while those in apartments with indoor cats lean towards cremation. If you're torn, think about the next ten years rather than the next ten days. Will you stay where you are?
That Iowa rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Ankeny only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Ankeny weather and timing
With average lows at or below freezing for about 5 months a year, Ankeny has a long stretch when the ground is too hard to dig, and frost can heave a shallow grave. A cat's grave needs to be deep enough to keep foxes and other animals away, which is hard work in frozen soil. Cremating now and burying the ashes later means a much smaller hole, almost anywhere you like, once the ground softens.
Ankeny winters are cold, with average lows at or below freezing in January, February, March, November and December. That gives you a little more time after a death in winter, but it also means frozen ground. If you were hoping to bury your cat in the garden, you may not be able to dig until spring, which is one reason many local families choose cremation first and bury the ashes later.

Cat cremation prices for Ankeny families
Standard pet insurance usually doesn't cover cremation, though it may cover euthanasia when it's medically necessary[5]. Some policies sell end-of-life add-ons: one paid up to $250 toward cremation and burial[6], which would cover a typical private cat cremation. For comparison, a pet cemetery burial for a cat averages about $566[4], roughly three times the cost of cremation.
Here's a number you won't find elsewhere: if every one of the roughly 1,100 cats lost in Ankeny each year were privately cremated at the national average of about clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4], local families would spend around $0.2 million a year. That's our estimate, and it's why several providers compete for work here.

Rules worth knowing in Iowa
Rules about pets after death are set locally, so it's worth knowing the basics for Iowa before you decide. Cremation itself is straightforward everywhere; burial and scattering are where local rules come in, and for a cat, burial is the one people most often ask about.
To find your county or city office in Iowa, start with the official Iowa local government directory.
We keep Iowa's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Iowa rules summary. Before a home burial in Ankeny, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
What to do first, and what can wait
- If the death was expected, your vet may already have a plan with you. Call them and confirm it.
- If it was sudden, an accident on the road, a fall, an illness nobody saw coming, phone your own vet or whichever emergency clinic is closest to Ankeny. They will walk you through what to do next.
- Keep your cat cool and indoors, in a box with a lid and a towel around them, which matters most when the weather is warm.
- Gather a few things to send with your cat, like a favorite blanket, a toy mouse or a note from the children.
- Ask the provider three questions: is it private, how is my cat identified, and when will the ashes come back?
- Confirm the price in writing, pickup fee and container included, before anyone collects your cat.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Ankeny?
The closest communities we cover are Johnston (about 7 miles), Altoona (about 8 miles) and Des Moines (about 10 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Ankeny too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Is Ankeny big enough to have several cat aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 12,000 Ankeny households keep a cat and around 1,100 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 77,833), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
How do Iowa attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Iowa human cremation rate at about 63.6%[3]. We show it on the Ankeny page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Does the Ankeny climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 86°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Can I keep my cat's whiskers and fur before cremation?
Yes, and it's easiest before collection. Clip a small lock of fur from somewhere hidden, like the chest or behind a back leg, and keep it in an envelope or small bag. Shed whiskers turn up in beds and on windowsills for weeks, and a glass vial keeps them safe. Many providers can also take a fur clipping or paw print for you if you ask on the first call.
Can I cremate a stray or community cat I've been feeding?
Yes. You don't need to be the registered owner to arrange cremation for a cat you cared for. Ask your vet to scan for a microchip first, in case someone else is looking for them. Local rescues and trap-neuter-return groups around Ankeny often know a provider with low-cost communal cremation, and a private cremation is possible if you'd like the ashes back.
