Kokomo, Indiana
Getting help for your cat in Kokomo
Highland Park, where the town keeps a giant preserved steer and an old hollow sycamore stump on display, shows that Kokomo has never been shy about remembering animals. For a household pet, most families here settle on something smaller, like an urn on a curio shelf or a stone by the back fence. Scattering along Wildcat Creek or in a city park should be cleared with the parks office first.
Kokomo, the Howard County seat, lies roughly 48 miles north of Indianapolis on flat farmland, with Wildcat Creek curling through the middle of town. It grew around car-parts and metal factories, and much of its housing is modest single-family homes on regular grid streets, plus newer additions on the south and west sides. A pickup inside the city seldom takes long; rural Howard County addresses just need clear road names.
Word travels in a place like Kokomo. You may find neighbors asking after your cat, the vet sending a card or someone at the feed store remembering the cat who sat on your porch. Let people help if you can. If your cat went missing and was found on a road, a neighbor may be the one who tells you; it's a hard way to learn, and it's fine to ask them to help you bring your cat home.
Kokomo is home to about 59,999 people, the 15th-largest of the 50 Indiana communities we cover. Indianapolis, roughly 48 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Kokomo run from there.
The closest communities we cover are Logansport (23 miles), Marion (25 miles) and Westfield (30 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Kokomo too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate
9,350
Kokomo: cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
59,999 ÷ 2.5 = 24,000 households; × 39% (cat) = 9,350. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
840
cat deaths per year in Kokomo, our estimate
How we calculated this
9,350 cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 840 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[2]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.
56.5%[3]
The NFDA projected Indiana's cremation rate at 56.5% for 2024.
clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4]
CareCredit's 2025 study put US cat euthanasia at $158 in clinic and $359 at home, cat cremation at $180 and cat cemetery burial at $566.

The local attitude to cremation
In Indiana, about 56.5%[3] of people are cremated, so both traditions are familiar. Among cat owners, the split often follows the house: families with land and outdoor cats tend to bury, while those in apartments with indoor cats lean towards cremation. If you're torn, think about the next ten years rather than the next ten days. Will you stay where you are?
The Indiana figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Seasons, collection and burial in Kokomo
Indoor cats who spend winter pressed against radiators and sunny windows can hide a slow decline for weeks. If an older cat in Kokomo is sleeping more, eating less or losing weight through January, February, March, November and December, mention it to your vet. And if you plan a home goodbye in winter, choose a warm room, lay out their bed and make sure the collection team has a clear, salted path to the door.
If your cat died outdoors during Kokomo's cold spell and wasn't found for a while, they may be stiff or frozen. Don't try to warm or straighten them. Lay them on a blanket in a box, keep them in a cold garage or porch, and tell the vet or crematory what happened. They see this every winter and will know what to do, and you can still choose private cremation with the ashes returned.

What you'll likely pay, and what adds to it
By our estimate, ~4.7 million[5] pet cats die in the US each year, so every provider serving Kokomo prices cat cremation as routine work. The cremation itself is rarely the big number; add-ons are. Our cost calculator lets you add collection, an urn and a paw print to see a likely total, and the memorial budget planner helps if you'd like to spread spending on keepsakes over time.
Here's a number you won't find elsewhere: if every one of the roughly 840 cats lost in Kokomo each year were privately cremated at the national average of about clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4], local families would spend around $0.2 million a year. That's our estimate, and it's why several providers compete for work here.

What's allowed in Indiana after your cat dies
If your cat was put to sleep, the drug used stays in the body after death and can poison a dog, fox or bird of prey that digs up a grave. That's why many authorities discourage burying euthanized pets anywhere animals can reach them, and why cremation is simpler for most families. The notes below show what Indiana says about burial and scattering.
Indiana keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Kokomo.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Indiana level first; our Indiana rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Kokomo or your HOA adds anything.
The first 48 hours, step by step
- If your cat dies at night, nobody needs a phone call before daylight. Carry your cat to the coolest room in the house and lay a towel over them.
- Put a towel or pad underneath. It's normal for a cat's bladder or bowels to release after death.
- Gently curl your cat into a sleeping position during the first hours, while the body is still soft. They'll fit the basket or box more easily, and they'll look more peaceful when you say goodbye.
- In the morning, call your vet or a crematory covering Kokomo. Let them know where your cat is now and whether you're able to drive them over.
- Ask for the price in writing, and make sure it covers pickup, the type of cremation (private or communal) and whatever the ashes come home in.
- Take a paw print, a lock of fur or their collar before collection if you'd like a keepsake.
- Write down the expected return date for the ashes and who will contact you when they're ready.
Keeping your cat close
This part of north-central Indiana can freeze from November right through March, and January nights dip to about 17F. That long cold season makes a detached garage a workable resting place for a pet's body overnight, provided it sits on a folded blanket. July is different: highs in the mid-80s mean you'll want the coolest indoor floor you have, with ice packs in pillowcases along the spine and belly.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Kokomo?
Usually yes. Logansport is about 23 miles away, Marion is about 25 miles away and Westfield is about 30 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is Kokomo big enough to have several cat aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 9,350 Kokomo households keep a cat and around 840 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 59,999), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Kokomo?
January, February, March, November and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 84°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Where are the providers that serve Kokomo actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Indianapolis, about 48 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Kokomo and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can my cat stay in the garage until the crematory can collect in winter?
In cold weather, an unheated garage or porch is a reasonable place for a day or two. Wrap your cat in a blanket, place them in a sturdy lidded box and make sure other pets and wildlife can't reach them. If daytime temperatures climb well above freezing, call for collection sooner.
Do crematories charge extra to collect from a rural address near Kokomo?
Some do. Many include collection within a set distance and charge per mile beyond it, or add a flat fee for remote or out-of-hours trips, and for a cat that fee can exceed the cremation itself. Ask for the collection price separately. Driving your cat to your vet or the crematory in a carrier is the easiest way to avoid it.
