How cat cremation works in Key West
Key West sits at the far end of the Overseas Highway in Monroe County, roughly 160 miles and several hours' drive from Miami, and that distance shapes pet aftercare here more than anything else. Homes are mostly tightly packed conch cottages, apartments and condos in Old Town and New Town, plus Navy housing. Ask any provider whether cremation happens in the Keys or on the mainland, and how long the ashes take to come back down US 1.
Key West is famous for its animals, from the six-toed cats at the Hemingway Home to the chickens that roam the streets. Burial is difficult here, since the island is coral rock with water close beneath and even the city cemetery uses above-ground tombs, so most families choose cremation. A little ash scattered at sea off the island, or a potted bougainvillea on the porch, makes a fitting memorial.

With cremation chosen for roughly 72.5%[3] of the population in Florida, the choice of method is widening too. Some pet crematories near Key West now offer water-based cremation (aquamation), which uses warm water and alkali rather than flame and still returns ashes. How Key West's weather affects the first few hours
In the hottest months (May, June, July, August, September and October), outdoor cats go looking for shade under decks, in sheds and beneath parked cars, and a cat who is ill will often hide somewhere like that. If you find them, use gloves and a towel, place them in a box and call your vet; there's no shame in needing help with this part.

Step by step in Key West
- If it's a child's cat, tell them simply and truthfully that the cat has died and won't come back. Avoid "put to sleep" with young children; it can make bedtime frightening.
- Let the child say goodbye if they want to: stroke the cat's fur, tuck in a drawing or choose the blanket your cat will travel in.
- Offer a small job, like picking a photo, writing the name for the urn label or keeping the collar safe. Children cope better with something to do.

Does the Key West climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 91°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Key West?

What if my cat died outdoors or was hit by a car near Key West?
